The guy who did finding Richard Simmons has a new podcast out called running from cops which is really good so far. It's an investigation into the show cops, how people get on there, and how it all works. Only 3 episodes so far but worth a listen.

I listened to this because of your recommend and it’s good

The creators of the show come off really poorly they don’t try to portray them well, also, they get into how people of colour are over represented as well as drug offenses, also gets into how people’s rights are violated in terms of signing their rights away to be in the show. I’d say it portrays cops less than good but they do some hand waving for the cops which can be a bit eye rolling

That being said they talk to a former cop who was on the show who is now a Defense attorney has some interesting insight. It covers from inception of the show to now both the cops and victims plus the production

It feels like they’re really going to go into the victims and how it affects them there was one whole episode on a sad story of a suicidal person who ended up on cops and how it portrayed him as a villain

I guess I’ll give a recommend, I finished the podcast Cold recently it is a true crime one, I know, but, they present it really well with a lot of never heard before audio and or writings/interviews

It’s slow at the start but it builds really well

Are there any other podcasts like Mystery Show that are actually decent? Short, engaging, slice-of-life human interest piece sort of stuff. I just tried Heavyweight and it almost feels like a parody of Mystery Show. Could've just been the handful of episodes I listened to that might not be indicative of the general quality of the show, but it was self-important, unnecessarily ponderous, and ultimately unsatisfying in its conclusions.

I listened to Mystery Show from your post here and if that wasn't the most adorably fun podcast I don't know what is, then it ended there was only like 6 episodes :O

I have a recco but I was hesitant to post it because I typically hear about solid podcasts like this through this sub forum and just thought it was already posted

Regardless, it’s called The Lady Vanished and it’s very much the same format as Up and Vanished it’s an investigation of a daughter’s missing mother in Australia who has been missing for 20 years, I’m just over half way through catching up but it (it’s currently on going) is great IMO lots of potential what ifs and such, do yourself a favour and listen to at least the first two episodes

What's a good aviation disasters podcast?

All the generic disaster pods seem to be someone reading Wikipedia from their garage, only decent one I've found is Catastrophe! with Jess Phoenix. Any other good ones?

Inside the black box as mentioned, I also like this one called Plane Crash Podcast i think it’s worth checking out he talks about the crashes sometimes has interviews with survivors or other personnel lmao nm both were already mentioned check them out though!

For generic disasters check out All Bad Things - A Disaster Podcast it’s not bad some episodes are p good some not so much but I haven’t unsubscribed yet

There’s a new podcast called Hunting Warhead, was one of those a million other podcasts put out a trailer of it, I usually ignore these but it was affiliated with the CBC :canada: anyways it is decent so far, it’s about child pornography and the deep web/tor so be aware, but a Scandinavian journalist tracks down the creator of the largest child pornography site on the dark web

Given the people's annoyance at one of the hosts of Reply All, how do you feel about Heavyweight's host? I like the stories fine but the intros and the points in the story when he interjects himself into the narrative bothers me a bit.

I literally was thinking this in my head and about to post this then I saw your post lmao

At first I actually thought heavyweight was a parody podcast, but I will say this, I listened through the whole podcast and it is fairly endearing and Jonathan really grew on me. There were some good episodes this season that stuck out to me, the recovering addict who got his father’s gun back from a literal nazi off the top of my head

Also he’s very Canadian and as a Canadian I get the weird sarcastic dead pan humour

I’ve been enjoying the latest season of Someone Knows Something

As a Canadian David Ridgen’s smooth Ontario accent just sits really well and puts me in that happy place. The first episode is slow but really picks up in the second

Did someone here recommend Behind the Police, I can’t remember, either way it’s worth a listen on how the police force in America started and how it has always been tied to racism and keeping people of colour down (or dead)

There’s a podcast called invisible choir, it’s like exactly the same format and over the top exaggerations and court room audio as sword and scale. I like to think it pisses him off this other guy is doing the same podcast

Have you tried Dragon Friends? It’s on like season 6 and they still barely know any of the rules and they tape two episodes at once so every other episode they’re drunk

David Harmon is a saint they constantly just gently caress up his DMing

The episode of Reply All about the guy with the secret baldness cure who kept hemming and hawing about what was in it was so infuriating to listen to that I'm angry just typing this so I think this is karma.

Reply all had been going downhill for a while but that one was especially egregious, that guy was obviously going through some mental health issues it was fairly shorty of them to just roll with it

No RPG podcast I've tried has ever managed to measure up to the Harmontown D&D segments. I just want an RPG podcast where a skilled DM gently guides a group of talented improv comedians who are too drunk to remember what they did the previous session and keep bringing their relationship issues into the game through an adventure.

I mean, dragon friends is the closest you’ll get to that and dragon friends is really, really great

Which is funny because dragon friends dm is David Harmon, I had to look to see if it wasn’t the same person

I’m kind of over weekly true crime where they do new cases each week but still listen to longer ones, some ok ones at the moment or have recently wrapped up

Cold season 2
The Doodler
Lost Hills
Looking for the Todt Family
Tom Brown’s Body

They’re mostly investigative focusing on the cases instead of comedy or editorialized

My go to for anyone asking about true crime is the first season of cold where he does the Susan Powell case to me it’s like the perfect true crime podcast and he also put out some episodes a year later that were really interesting on new information

I do really like the somebody knows something host though some seasons are hit or miss

Finding Desperado is their "season 2" but I think they just renamed their original feed so it'll be the first seven or so eps?

Ok I read your post on this one and I checked it out and binged both seasons, what a wild loving ride. I honestly thought it was a satire fake podcast for much of the first season because it was so ridiculous

Anyways I recommend both seasons of it, it’s a fun one

As for investigative shows not as funny but along the same lines maybe check out:

Ballad of billy balls
Death on Ice Valley
Have you seen this man?
The lady vanishes (I particularly like this one and hope they keep the investigation up covid put a wrench in it)
The Lighthouse
Missing in Alaska
Missing on 9/11
