Can anyone recommend a podcast that covers international news weekly? Ideally it would cover global events, lean towards comedy (don’t want some super dry news show) and around 20 mins would be great.

I have something similar for local politics which is perfect but wanted to get some more news as I sometimes don’t have time to read or watch it.

Four Finger Discount

Is this actually any good? I listened to one episode which was an hour long and half of it was just them talking about random unrelated poo poo which wasn’t interesting or funny.

I much preferred Talking Simpsons but as I said I’ve only done one episode of Four Finger Discount.

BBC just started doing Death in Ice Valley about the Isdal woman. It’s very good so far but you may already know a bit about the case.

I got the What a Time to Alive suggestion from this thread as well and it has quickly become and favourite podcast.

There's other good true crime podcasts but I have yet to find one that is episodic like Casefile other than Swindled. I would recommend these:

Death in Ice Valley - 10 part series about the Isdal Woman. They don't come to any conclusion about who she was, but they do a good job going over all the evidence and did some DNA and tooth isotope testing that hadn't been done before.

Swindled - Episodic series, 15 episodes so far, about "embezzlements, corruption, fraud, con men, and ponzi schemes".

I recommend Death in Ice Valley a ways back but I felt like it really dropped the ball pretty soon into it. Just felt like a huge amount of filler and speculation. Still like the style.

I’ll check out Swindled, sounds good.

If I recall, they don't really cover Amanda Knox's trial, since they solidly believe Knox and Sollecito got railroaded and the media's fixation on Knox distracts from both the victim and actual killer. They definitely cover the case and evidence though and talk at length about Meredith Kercher and Rudy Guede.

I've listened to a ton of true crime podcasts, here are some recs.

Casefile -- Probably the easiest one to recommend, very much a straightforward telling of true crime stories delivered with a lovely Australian accent. "Case 86: Amy Allwine" is a good entry episode.

Criminal -- Excellent if you prefer a broad definition of true crime that isn't always murder (but may be murder). Almost every ep is worth listening to, but as an entry point, "Money Tree" is good.

My Favorite Murder -- Skip this one if you don't like listening to hosts shoot the poo poo. But if you like the feeling of chatting with your good friends, Karen and Georgia, this may be up your alley. Entry ep: "129 - Coincidence Island" or "125 - Bedside Astrologer."

True Crime Garage -- The main selling point is the hosts pop out a two-parter every week, which is impressively efficient. Main drawback is one of the hosts is kind of a dumb guy. The other one knows what he's doing at least. Entry: probably "193/194 Lululemon Murder."

Generation Why -- Pretty good, if you can stand the fact that the hosts sometimes have godawful opinions about cases (ex. Amanda Knox, Kendrick Johnson, Brendan Dassey). Entry ep: not sure, maybe "The Springfield Three."

Real Crime Profile -- Gripping, if you can stand that Jim Clemente sometimes yells at, talks down to, and mansplains at the other hosts, and that Lisa actually occasionally says things dumb enough to warrant that kind of treatment. Entry: their deep dive into the Meredith Kercher murder, as mentioned previously.

The Vanished -- Strictly covers disappearances, and often obscure ones (since the host wants to use the podcast to draw attention to some cases in hopes of helping to get them solved). Be warned that the episodes aren't very tightly written, especially since they use a lot of audio from family members. Entry point: maybe "Episodes 114/115: Christopher Abeyta Part 1 and 2."

Single -story podcast:

Dirty John -- A wild ride.

Done Disappeared -- Enough has already been said about the incomparable vision of the host, John David Booter.

I'm trying Teacher's Pet next.

A good list and I agree with most things you’ve said. I’m liking Generation Why and Casefile quite a bit but find GW has a bit more discussion where as Casefile is very matter of fact. I’m from New Zealand too so the Australian accent is no draw.

I actually find Criminal to be quite sincere most of the time but I know what you mean.

Swindled could be added to this list even though it’s more about scams and stuff. Great dead-pan delivery and really ties in how awful some of these people are. Someone further up recommended it, so thank you.

Speaking of weird delivery and production: Conspiracy Theories and Cults. It’s just so weird to me how these shows come across.

I ran a forums search to see if there was any discussion on The Last Days of August and was surprised this is the only place it's mentioned given that Kevin Moore is a goony goon; of course listening to the podcast knowing he's a goon kind of elevated my level of interest.

A fellow goon also drew my attention to Kevin's Q&A here in SA and it's kind of weird reading it after hearing the podcast - https://www.somethingawful.com/comedy-goldmine/kevin-moore-porn/1/?fbclid=IwAR2oAcIXI1jYv13PDmX0Af4wEL22xqDUXu_ZWHcUXeqyZQMZrHYjhIMpOsQ

There's little doubt he's a gaslighter with some strangely intense charisma, whenever he's speaking on the podcast I found myself questioning whether he was also a victim of a lovely industry or whether he was at the end of the day what Ronson was implying he is, an abuser who gravitated towards these young vulnerable women due to some self-imagined savior's complex but after the interview with Sahari I felt like the verdict was pretty clear, he's just another douche in a horrible industry.

My take on August's life and death is: if you're an attractive young woman with who's willing to use her sexuality in order to gain the attention of older men there's literally millions of guys who'd jump at the opportunity to take advantage of you.

I think it's well worth listening to, definitely left an impression on me.
I used my free Audible book to get it. However given it’s in the Audible app I forgot to listen. I’ll try remember to start it today.

I am personally bummed about Reveal falling from grace, because I was a big fan of it a few years ago. But they kept replaying old stories without any kind of update, just to have something to put out on a weekly basis. I get that journalism takes time to be done right, but in that case, do something else. Interview reporters for their life stories, tell interesting things that happened or that you found while researching a bigger story, or just don’t be tied to it being weekly. Reply All isn’t weekly and is much stronger for it, though I loving hate one of the hosts on it and wish that he would gently caress off forever.

I feel you on Reveal. I was into it for a while but then got sick of the repeats. Also didn’t help that they didn’t label the repeats as that.

A few months ago a discovered Junk Food Cinema, and my thought was "wow this is exactly what I've been looking for - I like Cargill, and the other guy is a little annoying but I can put up with that"

10-15 episodes later, and my opinion has changed to "wow this is exactly what I've been looking for - I like Cargill but I can't loving stand the other guy and he makes me want to jab pencils in my ears"

If you've listened to the podcast you'll know what I mean - the other guy REALLY sucks and is annoying. The last straw was in the episode I just listened to on The Running Man where he made a big deal about a "plot hole" that was once again the result of him not understanding something that was made very clear in the movie.

ANYWAY - does anyone have any recommendations on other podcasts like this? Deep dives on 80's and 90's movies that aren't always great but we love them anyway. I've listened to How Did This Get Made and it was close but not exactly what I was looking for. Also tried No Such Thing as A Bad Movie and hated the hosts (this is a problem i have with lots of podcasts apparently).

The thing I like about Junkfood Cinema is that the hosts (well Cargill anyway) genuinely love the movies being reviewed, even if they aren't strictly "good movies". A lot of podcasts I've looked at seem to focus on the hosts just tearing the movies to shreds, which doesn't really appeal to me.

It’s a little different from what you’re looking for but maybe check out Unclear and Present Danger. It looks at 80s and 90s “Dad” movies. It’s interesting and funny.
