If 12 Byzantine Rulers works for you and you want something educational, you should absolutely check out The History of Rome. Up to something like 150 parts now, the host traces Roman history from its earliest origins - mostly in the 'great man' style, but with some other cultural information that's interesting. He has a very conversational style I, at least find is pretty easy to listen to.
