I liked Redban's self-pitying "this year has sucked! it's been so crazy!". The opportunities the dude has in front of him are ridiculous and he can't stop with the self pity or get his nose out of a porn star's butthole for long enough to actually make the most of them.

I just listened to the first one, with Little Esther as a guest. Looking forward to seeing where it goes, because Duncan's my favorite person on any podcast

Yeah that was a really, really bad one if you don't like misogynistic libertarian bullshit. Ari's story about the trouble he got into was a lot of fun at least!

DTFH is my favorite podcast, but it's probably not for everybody. I've learned a lot from Duncan, but I guess it all depends on what you're looking for from a podcast.

Thinking it's acceptable to not pay people unless they verbally ask you for money is just so strange, too.

The idea of an insanely fortunate 37 year old man expressing himself with the phrase "fagotry[sic] planet" does something to my brain.

Definitely went eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeegh when Dice was like, play my son's music right this instant, and then actually shushed them when someone started an attempt at a segue like 30 seconds into the song.

I don't think being proud as a parent is stupid I just thought it was awkward and a little rude! Sorry if I offended you, it seems to me like that move is like showing someone pictures of your kids (which is fine) but insisting that they stare at the picture for 2 minutes straight (which is a little weird maybe!)

Freedom of speech is not an all-protective shield that means people don't get to criticize you for being a thick-headed privileged rear end just fyi. People don't get to tell you what to say, sure, but you don't get to tell oppressed segments of the populace that they just need to nut up. "You're not wrong, Walter, you're just an rear end in a top hat"

Except it's not, because I don't think anybody here is arguing that there ought to be a law. What I'm saying is that the best thing a person can do, in this case and maybe in all cases, is to self-examine and modify their own behavior out of love and consideration for other people who have different problems.

NewsRadio is the best sitcom of all time. I gave it a chance because it had Dave god damned Foley on it but it turns out the entire cast was completely brilliant.

You're probably either talking about Duncan Trussell or Daniele Bollelli, who both completely rule and you should check out every ep they've done. e to add: Bollelli has been a guest on the Duncan Trussell Family Hour twice and those 2 episodes are loving magical.

mcvey posted:You guys are right with not worrying about it, I just lost a lot of 'respect' for him after he blindsided the podcast with his little rant. He's a hilarious, positive dude most of the time now but it's good to also remember that he did kidnap someone with a machine gun. Obviously he's a different person now, but I mean, you probably shouldn't agree with anyone on 100% of poo poo anyway, unless they are Duncan.

Bubba Smith posted:Yep. To an extent this is true, but it's also true that just saying the words artistic expression doesn't make it less awful when some privileged gently caress tries to hide behind a nonsense freedom of speech argument or condescending 'get a thicker skin, person who isn't a straight white male' stance.

Bubba Smith posted:But I don't even think it's artistic expression, since I'm saying the majority of stand up comedy isn't even "art." It's just dick and fart jokes and personal experiences. Very few comics are actually great writers and thinkers. It's silly entertainment filled with a lot of scumbags and weirdos. I just don't understand the outcry when a comic says something stupid or socially offensive, since it's to be expected. You don't have to understand it, you just have to respect that your subjective point of view is not the only one and is not automatically correct by default. Words are powerful and using them carelessly is for fuckheads.

Bubba Smith posted:I just said that people take comedy too seriously, since most comics don't even take their own acts that seriously. They're just up on stage trying to make people laugh. I'm just allowing for the fact that because something does not offend me, and it offends someone else, that doesn't make me right and them wrong. I don't personally get offended by very much at all, and I don't think I have any right *not* to be offended. I just don't think that I have the right to tell other people to take words less seriously and if I were to do so it would probably be a gross unawareness of many different kinds of privilege. Ethically I don't think it's a black and white thing by any means, and of course comedians should feel free to talk about any topic they feel like, but if it's done without a sense of compassion/understanding for the people who are actually affected by the words you're choosing to use, it makes you an rear end in a top hat. Not all assholes are unfunny, but sure, it's a bummer when you find out that someone who you think is hilarious is also an rear end in a top hat.

Bohemian Nights posted:Thought maybe he meant subtypes of comedy, like prop comedy or musical comedy or something, but apparently he's probably talking about : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_comedy Joe doesn't like being reminded that he uses sexism as a crutch and it's lazy comedy e: vvv it's not at all 'perfectly acceptable' to say what he said. That's why he apologized. Do you think Daniel Tosh of all people would apologize to some random lady if he thought it wasn't hosed up what he said? I'm trying hard not to Kilstein-out here because suggesting that it's perfectly acceptable to say that in some circumstances rape is 'great' is a pretty out-there fringe position and that's putting it excessively kindly. Tosh didn't seem to me like he was bowing to corporate pressure either, so I think he'd agree. You're arguing based off of an assumption that he doesn't mean what he said in his apology because you assume he agrees with you. I don't think he does agree with you, but maybe that's just my general tendency to give people the benefit of the doubt getting out of control. What I like about him is that unlike hardcore conspiracy theorists/junk science advocates he can be persuaded. Also, his constant admissions that he's probably an idiot for believing the things he does are remarkably self-aware. Yeah, this is all true and it makes it all the more sad when privilege of any kind comes up he gets super defensive about being successful and they seem to be pretty much the only topics he does that about.

I tried to pick it up again, but I was so offended by that stupid digitally altered voice he greeted me with on the Chelsea Peretti (who?) episode that I turned it off within 10 seconds. Shame, the actual podcast might have been worth listening to, but what once got a pass as charming quirkiness just strikes me as loving annoying and occasionally creepy now. DTFH is the best podcast and every episode is a gem. Sorry for ur lots.
