What I usually do is piss off the legion, kill the assassins they send after me and sell their gear.

East of Novac there's an NCR outpost that has two C4 in a box, worth 1000 caps each.

North of the East Pump Station or east of Gun Runners, you'll find Durable Dunn's Sacked Caravan; the combat armour and plasma rifles on the corpses there are worth about 5000 caps.

West of the 188 Trading Post is the Repconn Headquarters. You can go during the daytime and take the tour to find an employee ID card - or simply have 50 in Lockpick or Science to get through a locked door. On the top floor you'll find a VIP keycard in a briefcase held by a skeleton, which will get you into a storage room on the ground floor with a ton of valuables and one of the best weapons in the game.

Do the job in Freeside where you collect debts and then just pocket the money and don't finish the quest.

Collect and sell all the stuff with a decent sell value off of enemies. If you get overloaded, use items to repair each other instead of ditching them.
Just doing this got me into Vegas on my first run without having to do any side money making (on PS3, so no mods or console for extra carry weight).

Selling the stuff from Durable Dunn's sacked caravan will get you enough for the credit check even if you keep a set of the armor to use.
There are 3 really easy to get snowglobes you can turn in to house for 6k. (One at the Goodsprings graveyard, one in the old Mormon Fort, one in House's Casino)
If your luck stat is 6 or higher you can pretty rapidly make something like 35k from gambling at the 3 big casinos plus Atomic Wrangler
The first little bit of Lonesome Road has a ton of loot that sells for a lot (Marked Men armor is not that great stats wise but is cash wise). It's pretty tough but it's nowhere near impossible to clear the bunker then the area where you get the nuke launcher after doing Goodsprings and Primm (level 5 or so IIRC).

I think ropekid mod patches this out but I don't think vanilla ever did anything about being able to walk into the energy weapon shop and just steal their display stuff and sell it back to them to immediately rack up a few thousand caps.

Thanks! The thing is the carry weight is lower in JSawyer so I've had trouble being a loot goblin.

edit: I'm addicted to alcohol because I keep drinking for the +2 str.

Thinking of restarting with the trait to walk everywhere overloaded. And maybe try a different build than the one I always do of survival/gun/repair.

I'm doing a playthrough with 1 Strength where I can only pick up objects that weigh 2 pounds or less. The Pack Rat perk is amazing in any playthrough, but even more so for this character. The Reinforced Followers Lab Coat and Space Suit Helmet give 12 DT in JSawyer with a total weight of two pounds. In the vanilla game, the All-Purpose Science Suit weighs two pounds and gives 13 DT. My weapon of choice is the Plasma Defender.

Just lost about 2h of gameplay.
Was doing the missing NCR Cpl White quest, which sent you to see a girl at the Omertas casino.
Talked to her and fast traveled out, forgetting to exit from the front and collect my weapons.
Entering the casino again from the front just locks you in place. Using TCL doesnt allow you to talk or exit either.
Weird thing is, I cant believe thats never happened to me before, unless its a bug from Tale of two Wastelands.
Probably not though

e: will have to attempt teleporting into the cell where that girl was, if I havent overwritten that quick save.

Looking over this game's quests again, and it's wild how despite playing this game like 18 times, theres still some unmarked quests I've never seen before. I think a lot of em are easy to miss since they aren't considered full on quests so they don't feature as prominently in various strat guides...

Most of them are just little things like repairing Trudy's radio, but others like "Dealing with Contreras" and "Claws Out" are basically full sized quests. (I mean, at least by "The Moon Comes Over the Tower" standards) I wonder why the game consider these just unmarked quests vs true side quests? Like what makes "Can You Find it in Your Heart?" a full on side quest but "Pistol Packing" an unmarked quest? I understand that "The Moon Comes Over the Tower" had a bunch of stuff cut content and was meant to be larger, but it's interesting to think what the thought process was behind determinating which is which.

I just heard a Mr. New Vegas news story that I've never heard before. There was a woman speaking - I missed the first part, then she said something like "That's not something most people would do, and it means a lot to me." Anyone know what that was about? It's possible I heard a nearby NPC saying it and thought it was the radio.

That's the one, thanks. Also a great example of a quest that is unmarked for no apparent reason.

When you pause the game, there's a help menu that includes complete instructions for Caravan. It's too unintuitive to play without knowing the rules, but once you know the rules and have a full deck, it's an easy way to empty the AI's pockets and doesn't even require a high Luck skill.

Mr. Prokosch

Behold My Magnificence!
The cool thing about Caravan is the AI also has no idea how to play the game. I don't remember the rules anymore but I remember when I finally forced myself to play it I won every game by tanking the enemy with sabotage cards and then building basic caravans unopposed.

Grab the bullshit by the horns

The only two achievements I don't have are winning 3 games of caravan and winning 30 games of caravan. Every playthrough I say to myself "I'll knock those out" but come time to sit down and do it, ehhhh...

I actually learned the rules so I could offer it at the casino I was running at a Post-Apoc event. Actual old-timey gambling game Faro was way more popular.

Caravan's not too bad, and the post-apocalyptic ccg aspect is a really cool and flavorful design conceit. It seems like its relatively shallow but I haven't sat down and gamed it out.

That said I think I looked up a gamefaqs for the rules

The base rules are (relatively) straightforward. The issue is having to remember the bizarre things the face cards do. If it were a real game, it should just be written on the card. No one has to ask what a reverse does in Uno.

I felt ashamed of playing like 1300 hours of this game without having all the achievements so I brute-forced the two Caravan ones on my last playthrough with a trick I found online about just stockpiling the hell out of face cards.

The last achievements I got were the Gun Runner's Arsenal challenges. Deathclaw Pro Hunter and Man-Machine Interface are doable with melee perks, but Against All Tyrants requires you to play with no companions so they don't kill named members of the Legion before you can.

Ask me about my wealthy lifestyle and passive income! I love bragging about my wealth to my lessers! My opinions are more valid because I have more money than you! Stealing the fruits of the labor of the working class is okay, so long as you don't do it using crypto. More money = better than!
Just to be perfectly clear, I bought a Steamdeck specifically just to play Fallout New Vegas. The fact that it can play so many other games and emulators is pure gravy to me.

Ringo gives you a 52-card deck when you ask him how to play Caravan. Otherwise, you can buy individual cards from merchants, but each general trader will only have a few cards in stock at any time.

I think it's interesting to have 'play' be a concept in your fictional world, and for that to be informed based on what is available. There are probably shittons of destroyed decks of cards around New Vegas, mostly incomplete. Since you can't just play Solitare with them, some traders designed a game around using them.

just get a shitload of 8s, 6s, 10s, and Kings

if you get an 8, play it with a ten and double the 8 with a king for 26

if you get a 6, play it with a ten and double the ten with a king for 26

if your opponent gets a good track early, bust it by doubling something with a king
