The courier that really clicked for me was my aging pro-NCR John Wayne run. I tried to play something between his Rooster Cogburn, and his "Big Glory" WW2 characters. I stayed loyal to my country, but tried to keep it on the right path. I also didn't take poo poo from anyone. Except Raul, my unfaithful manservant.

I don't want to get too fanfic here, but instead explain why this is my favorite game of all time. I wanted to play a old man who'd been in battle his entire life, and was rapidly falling apart. I wanted to feel like each summit climbed was a challenge. I wanted to tell people to eat a bag of poo poo when they were wasting my time, or trying to wrong something I cared about. For the most part New Vegas never let me down. I rarely felt railroaded into choosing something other than what I felt my character would naturally do, and was often surprised by the options presented to me. That's a great game.

There are things I'd love to have seen done better (low intelligence dialogue, bigger/better set pieces), but I understand the financial/time limitations of game development.

I'm more pleased with this game than any other, and New Vegas will always be The Grand Adventure In The Mojave to me. I hope Obsidian is given the opportunity to do another, and that if/when Bethesda does the next game they take a long hard look at what Obsidian did right.

Best case scenario (if the mmo actually ends up going ahead) is Bethesda accepts it's being made, and helps fund/guide it.

Especially early on, where you'd be plinking away at a guy with a pipe rifle hoping to have enough AP to reach cover after critically missing every shot. Then his ten homeboys would take their turn. Then all the junkies would, one at a time, slowly shuffle away from the fight.

Now I feel the need to replay those.

Luck must be such a bitch to balance. Of course someone who pumps their special up to the maximum js going to want to see super-human returns on gambling, it's just what you'd expect. But that breaks the game's entire economy, and there's not a lot you can do about it.

Sure the casinos have limits, but if you set those too low it becomes pointless and you penalize people who gamble legitimately.

I do love most of what new Vegas introduced. Survival isn't the best option, but it has a ton of cool uniques related to it. It's far more useful than outdoorsman from the first two. Same with the consolidation of gun types, it makes far more sense now.

Speaking of guns and luck, am I the only one who'd like to see item degradation scrapped and replaced with a more detailed critical hit/failure system? That's something I sincerely miss from the first game.

At least Raul doesn't pull a Sulik and SMG me in the back.

I'm hoping for a radical departure myself, assuming the team behind it is competent. I don't want them to ditch the iconic Fallout stuff or even America as a setting, but there is still an entire country to explore and populate.

The truth is I don't have a lot of confidence in Bethesda to integrate Fallout to Hawaii or Florida, but I'd love to see the insanity that's going on over there. The Commonwealth could be awesome too, but a straight skip to replicant style androids from the clunky Mr. Gutsies would be a hard sale.

Well I am now the rear end in a top hat, but back to the topic of Fallout 4's location - I'd really like to see the eastern side of Legion territory. What's going on over there? Are they facing any other fronts? What do they look like post-Ceaser? Plenty of opportunity for new threats that aren't the Enclave/BoS which are both fairly played out at this point, but you could still arguably justify appearances by both to serve up some fan-service.

Also I hope Bethesda follows Obsidian's lead, and doesn't just serve up one faction as the winner this time. The fact that there is no 'clear-cut' good guy in New Vegas was probably my favorite thing about it. I didn't care for the BoS in Fallout 3, but was forced to accept them as the best choice since they were my only one.

Fallout is at it's best when everyone is a scheming rear end in a top hat using you for their own ends. Remember First Citizen Lynette from Fallout 2? There was a character I absolutely wanted to force feed a few rounds from my SMG, but was forced to work with if I wanted to maintain access to one of the most important cities in the game.

I like to think their abandonment of medicine is temporary. Caeser clearly has no problem taking advantage of it himself. If you introduce medicine into a war you're faced with moral issues that can cause lots of subtle problems: Are you morally responsible for taking care of the survivors from the opposition? What do you do with your own survivors who may be amputees, and now worthless as fodder or even labor? If people start asking these questions they might start asking questions about the misogyny, child slaves, etc.

Turning down the securitron army is pretty dense however, and I'd love to see that justified. Even if he didn't use them for the current conflict, it seems like they'd be infinitely useful later on. I'm willing to try anywhere new, but I sincerely hope they continue to develop the Legion since it felt like they were so robbed by the limited development time of New Vegas.

Fallout 3's set-pieces were far superior to those in New Vegas in my opinion. They may have fumbled the execution a lot (a city built around an live nuke), but they certainly felt rewarding. The elevator ride, and subsequent view from Washington Monument were far superior to uhh... walking up to the Yangtze Memorial and finding some radscorpions.

New Vegas is my favorite game of all time mind you, but the Legion not getting developed more and the weak set-pieces were it's biggest flaws.

I agree completely, and I think the Strip itself would have been a great alternative. Two of those problems were unfortunately hardware limitations (consoles :argh:), and the third probably due to development time. As it was I was slightly disappointed when I got there after the build-up. 99% of the game for me is outside of The Strip, the single biggest set-piece in New Vegas.

All of the advice you've gotten so far has been pretty spot on. Fallout 3 is a very good game, but you'll likely find it very frustrating to go back to it after New Vegas. Be warned that they're both incredible time-sinks - I've probably spent a couple hundred hours between the two and their DLC.

You'll notice a pretty different style in tone between the two. Fallout 3 takes place on the east coast, and acts as sort of a 'soft reboot' of the series. New Vegas (obviously set in the west) is more like a direct sequel to Fallout 1/2.
Even though they share the same cannon/engine/assets/gameplay they're very different games.

If you end up digging New Vegas make sure to get the DLC before you finish up the game - all together they form a pretty awesome 'complimentary' story that enhance the main quest. Fallout 3's DLC is mostly trash, with the exceptions of The Pitt and Point Lookout. All of them have some pretty awesome items if you're into that sort of thing.

Hallelujah. The tribals were one of my favorite parts of Fallout 2, and I've sort of accepted that everyone else hated them so they got toned down. Sulik clearly had a pretty rich heritage and belief system driving him. It's hard to believe that sort of thing faded away after a few generations in the NCR. I would have loved to have seen more of that in game. We got the awesome Honest Hearts, but it wasn't no Grampy Bone.

At this point I just assume the N.C.R. started a blanket trading program with the California tribals and called it a day.

Edit: Just to throw a few words of defense out to Honest Hearts. I loved the buff to the survival skill, and the new low-tech crafting options. Stalking the survivalist, and finding peaks to get the temporary buff were a major part of the gameplay. The problem is things like the craftable armor are easily outclassed by other items you can simply go pick-up.

I really like the Dead Money conversation though, because the entire DLC flies in the face of modern game conventions (and modern gamers who've gotten used to them). It obfuscates the map marker by making the villa mazelike and placing some unpassable traps (gas, holograms, radios) whichh Elijah comments on. It penalizes you for treating your companions poorly by having them turn on you at the end, Dean the most overtly but there've been several posts about having to kill Christine and God/Dog as well. See I get that, but my problem is they have zero content outside of their recruitment. Who brainwashed Charon, and for what purpose? What's the deal with Clover? None of this is ever explored, and so their limited back stories merely act as excuses to give you a companion. They don't give a poo poo what you do, or why you're doing it. They just want to follow you... uh because you paid for them.

I'm sure there were others, but nothing memorable.

It seems like any time a game journalist writes something about New Vegas they have to call it buggy, but never support their claims. Meanwhile Fallout 3, which is still a hot-mess of sound issues for me, gets a free pass.

I've been playing through Fallout 3 for the first time since Mothership Zeta came out, and I feel the need to admit I'm actually having some fun in it. With mods the game is absolutely beautiful, and exploring is very rewarding on a visual level:

Unfortunately that’s sort of where the “rewarding” aspect of exploration ends. There is a lot of cool poo poo to see, but not a lot to take and make part of your character. The unique weapons rarely even have unique textures - instead mostly just offering a increase to damage/clip size, and they rarely have some a cool task associated with them. I’m using the unique gatling laser Vengeance right now, and it’s really just a gatling laser +2. No change in skin or behavior. Contrast that to the Survivalist’s Rifle with its ugly mismatched furniture, broken sight, and awesome backstory. That rifle was part of my character by the time I left Zion, a reward for doing something fun. Vengeance is just the same gun I could get anywhere, but with more damage. I got it because it was in a place I entered.

Unfortunately most of the characters remain dull as hell, and the few interesting ones are painfully limited in how you can interact with them. For example I love Liam Neeson's James. The problem is James, while well voiced and very likable, doesn't have a lot to offer beyond being a plot-device. He spends the majority of the game missing, and when you finally find him you only have a few dialogue options with him. When he asks why you left the vault your only options are along the lines of "You left me, boo-hoo." No "Your leaving caused the Overseer to go on a rampage and kill Jonas, and come looking to do the same to me. Thanks a lot for that." A better game would have given you the opportunity to at least discuss (if not challenge) James' obsession with Project Purity. The escort mission where you return with him to Project Purity would have been a perfect time for this: James stops to catch his breath somewhere and you get the opportunity, as his child, to question some of his decisions. Imagine how cool it would have been to convince James he’d been a lovely father, and have his final moments spent trying to make amends rather than simply going out a hero.

I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you. Fallout 3 is fun, but it’s not very rewarding.

That's a bummer. Oh well, I can live without quick saves I suppose.

Get yourself CASM (check the modding thread) and you really won't have to worry about it.

So any chatter on Fallout 4? I know I'm not the only one who started Skyrim and took in the view and immediately wanted FO4. Rumor is it's set in Boston, which will let them explore a few things mentioned in the lore, but I really wanted to stay in the western setting. See the Pacific Northwest maybe. If it's just places like The Institute or The Commonwealth I feel like we've pretty much seen that in OWB.

Meh, that's about all we've heard so far. I'm guessing FO4 will be a next-gen title if they're just now doing location scouting. I really hated the entire android plot line in Fallout 3, and thought it was probably the least lore friendly thing introduced by the game. Maybe they can pull it off, but honestly I don't want to see technology much past that of the enclave. There's a point where you stop being "retro-scifi," and unless it's carefully handled The Institute could easily pass that point.

I'm really hoping Bethesda took some notes from New Vegas, but who knows how they feel about it. I'm a little worried they'd be bitter about jerks like me talking about how superior Obsidian's slapped together game is compared to their epic AAA title. I hope at the very least they keep in things like the diverse crafting, iron sights, and mod kits. A good story with branching plots would be nice too, but I'm not really expecting it after Skyrim.

They had better include the Infinite Corridor.

Hell yes.

You have been assigned to track down renegade androids in the Midwest. You will discover that the androids have banded together with intentions of forming an underground society. The twist comes when you discover--not that you are an Android--but that the people you work for are part of the Enclave. They plan to use the androids for a standing army, which will be used to wipe out towns, wholesale. You must decide whether to help the Underground Robot Railroad etch out a peaceful existence, or enslave them to destroy civilization.

If you help the Enclave power up the android army (with a solid-gold Bobblehead) your character is doomed to a stupid death post-game since they've been programed to destroy anyone born outside of the Enclave's bunkers including you. The new president of the Enclave, a robot voiced by Robin Williams, does thank you however.
