Woodford is a good (albeit IMO overpriced) mixing bourbon, but I wouldn't really advocate for it as a sipper. I'm not familiar with prices there - what else is available in that price range?

Woodford not a sipping bourbon? What is in your opinion?

There's not much available even in specialist stores. Bullet for 40e, Blanton's for 60e, Sazerac for 70e. I've had small batch beam, pappy's, and Elijah at tastings but it just doesn't make it over here. I'm keen to try more, makes a nice change from all the pot still.

Maybe it's just the bottle that I have, but Woodford always tasted unpleasantly young/bitter and bland to me. Especially when compared to other bottles in its price range like EWSB, EC12, and Buffalo Trace.

Those are sweet even for bourbon so I can see where you are coming from. But I believe you are confusing the rye for young.

That could be. As I drink more bourbons, I tend to find that I prefer the sweet and/or fruity varieties to the ones with tannic or peppery/"bitey" qualities. (Curiously, though, I also tend to enjoy straight-up ryes. Weird, huh?)

Still, I'll give that Woodford in my cabinet another try tonight and see if anything has changed since the last time.

Woodford is my go to sipping bourbon. I like it precisely because it isn't as sweet as some others in its price range.

In my opinion, Woodford is about the best sipper you can get for under $40 and handily beats Buffalo trace/EC12. Although it is also my opinion is that Buffalo Trace is the best sipper you can get for under $30. Its good to have opinions

There is a liquor store in town that semi regularly has Woodford on sale for $27. I actually like the normal better than the double oaked, fwiw.

Speaking of Woodford, they are offering personalized labels for Christmas. I don't know why you'd want one unless you are giving Woodford as a gift then it would be pretty cool but in any case...

I'm signed up for the Makers Mark ambassador program and every year they send me a thing at Christmas time for gifting Makers. Gift boxes for it and stuff like that. This year was a little soccer style scarf to put on the bottle. As I have no need for such a thing, it is now being worn by my 3 year old's doll.

Bought some Jefferson bourbon because it was on sale. I had this about five years ago and only remembered that I wasn't impressed but hey, maybe I was wrong or maybe it's better now! No, I wasn't wrong and no, it isn't better. There is nothing offensive about the flavor, it's your basic vanilla/caramel bourbon but it looks watered down and tastes watered down. At $15 I would drink this and feel good about it but at $30 ($25 sale price) it's just way overpriced.

Two awesome whisk(e)y deals at Costco right now:

1) Oban 14 is discounted to $47.99 until the end of the year.

2) They must have purchased a lot of High West Double Rye, because they had about a dozen bottles on display priced at $26.99!

I ended up grabbing the Double Rye, but may be back for the Oban if Xmas money comes my way.

When making a mixed drink with whiskey in the recipe, do you guys use high quality whiskey, or do you tend to go for the cheaper stuff like Buffalo Trace?

Depends on the mixed drink, but the first old fashioned that I made myself with the purist recipe was with Buffalo Trace and I've never looked back.

That high west double rye makes really good old fashioned and Sazerac's.

I feel that if its a drink like an old fashioned where the alcohol is the primary taste, then you should use a decent one. If its a drink like a margarita you can use something cheap since its going to be covered up.

VV Might be right, but I everything really dry.

I kinda feel like any drink with sugar added is a waste of good booze. I wouldn't use bottom shelf booze, but like buffalo trace is ideal. I like Rittenhouse as well for mixed drinks, especially mixed with ginger ale.

Are there any recommendations for a high end Canadian whisky other than Crown XR?

*edit* I'm down in Texas. A buddy is looking for a nice bottle to give as a gift, but feels the XR is overpriced for what it is. He's fine spending a bit, just wants something worth it.

I have a bottle of Lot no. 40 (2012 Edition) that is pretty satisfying, and was also super affordable (if you live in Canada).

Holy poo poo High West Double Rye is crazy. I tasted it alongside the only other rye in my cabinet (Rittenhouse). While the Rittenhouse is all vanilla, spearmint/wintergreen, and clove/allspice, the Double Rye hits you with a mix of pine needles, coriander, lemon/orange peel, cinnamon candy, and candy-cane-like mint, combined with an underlying, almost butterscotch-like sweetness. I can safely say I've never tasted a whiskey even remotely like this one, and it's definitely going to become a standard in my cabinet.

Every couple of months or so my boss and a few long time friends get together for some drinks and dinner. Often after we'll head up to a local whiskey bar and have a couple drinks. Being woefully uninformed I generally "have what he's having." This being the first time I've really drank whiskey much I've found it a bracing (in a great way!) and flavorful experience.

I've since bought some Dalwhinnie 15 simply because it was one of the things we've had there that I liked and happened upon Red Breast on another occasion.

The OP's suggestions are helpful so much thanks there. However I've really no idea where I am on the spectrum (in terms of the things I've had) and what to try next. I suppose I'll pick something peaty as at the moment I've no idea what that even means. Can anyone put that in words?

Apologies if this shows up in the thread regularly. I've only really been through the last few pages thus far.

Edit: And now that I delve a bit further back I see Kenning made a good post about flavors that kinda addresses my question. I think.

My boss, the wonderful person that she is, gifted me a bottle of Yamazaki 12. The problem is that now I need to replace it on my Christmas list with something else. I was looking at the Laphroaig Quarter Cask but I'm not experienced in Islay whiskey. Would that be a good beginner's peat whiskey or is there another I should look at first?

Laph QC was my intro to Islays and it's really good. The time in smaller barrels gives it some lovely sweet vanilla/oaky notes that balance the peat nicely. If you're willing to spend a bit more, Lagavulin 16 is an excellent option too.

The QC is a good intro to Islay whiskies. I almost find it too sweet compared to the 10 year, and I've had multiple friends who aren't really peat fans really enjoy it.

e: Alright, I've realized that with as many bourbons as I've had (and since my last post on it about a year ago I've actually AVOIDED IT, just so I don't get too wrapped up on it) man, I really think this is the best one. I've tried all that expensive bourbon that tries to pose itself as old school single malt scotch, and I've drank pretty much all the cheap stuff at this point. There really just isn't anything quite like a good ol' bottle of Wild Turkey 101.

I like a lot of things, but WT101 on ice is probably my favorite alcohol ever. There's just nothing quite like it.

I guess I'm just a simple dude with simple tastes.
