Irish whiskey as a whole is a bit meh being dominated by the likes of Jameson's and Bushmill's but there are fantastic single pot still whiskeys out there and there's also a bunch new distilleries opening in Ireland so I look forward to trying those in a couple of years.

Tax refund got deposited yesterday, so I got these.

Went Irish with Irish Drinking Holiday coming up next month. Gave both 2 Gingers and Clontarf a try because the positive reviews/price point ratio seemed good. The Bushmills is just, whatever, I had a couple of bucks left over.

Thought about getting something a little closer to the top shelf, but I kind of want to work my way up a bit since everything is new to me anyway. And it's tough to ignore my inner cheapskate. Just shouting it down that, no, I didn't need the 1.75L Clontarf even if it is over twice as much at less than twice the price, was tough enough.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one to Flavortown, and that has made all the difference.

Every single Irish whiskey I've had has this same off-putting almost sour flavor on the finish that I just can't get past. I've had a ton of Bourbons and Scotch, but this flavor seems to be exclusive to Irish whiskey. It's very pronounced in Jameson but I find it even in the mid to high end Irish whiskies. A friend bought me a bottle of Teeling for Christmas and I've had 2 pours of it. I just can't get past that flavor. Am I crazy or is there something about the process that makes all Irish whiskey taste like this? I don't get it in any other whiskey.

There's something about all Irish whiskeys I've ever tried that puts me off, too. Can't really describe it and you're the first person who I've heard say the same thing.

Powers is usually my daily driver Irish, but every once and a while I get a wicked craving for Jameson. I will say though that price point I find Tullamore Dew to edge out Jameson a little bit.

I've never noticed any sour flavor in any Irish I've had, but they're definitely nothing like any American or Scottish whiskey that I've tried.

It might be the unmalted barley. Due to a taxation quirk a long time ago it was cheaper to add some unmalted barley to the mix and then some magical chemistry happens that draws out the sugars, I think. Irish distilleries kept doing it because that's what people came to expect. I don't think they do it in Scotland.

This is correct. I mean, I don't know if that's what they're tasting but the unmalted barley part is and they don't do it in Scotland.

Got myself some Old Forester 1920, their Prohibition-style whiskey. Drink it straight if you want to get trashed real fast!

But seriously, I like it. It's a quality bourbon that's also really strong.

Ahhh, now see, maybe that's the reason why I like Irish whiskey over Scotch. I've never been able to put my finger on it, but Scotch always had a bit too much of a "honeyed" flavor for me, maybe it's that sour flavor from the Irish whiskey that I'm missing. I've tried heavily peated Scotch, like Lagavulin and unpeated Scotch like Auchentoshan and they both had a sweet note at the finish that reminded me almost of Ethiopian honeywine, which, while I like with spiced foods like Indian or Ethiopian, I don't like sipping on, likewise I find that I'm not a huge fan of Bourbons. I like them, but they were "missing something" for me as a sipping drink.

Any particular reason? Actually ended up trying all three tonight and found I liked the Clontarf the best. 2 Gingers had a bit of a cardboard/paper-y taste to it and more of a burn than either the Clontarf or the Bushmills.

Clontarf had a little apple and caramel to it and the burn was pretty minimal. Still not sure that I would drink it on its own, but at least now I have a vague idea of what I'm looking for. The 2 Gingers is probably going to be relegated to mixing and cooking duty.

Cheers to everyone who recommended WT101 in this thread. It's surprisingly cheap here in BC, and I like it better than any other bourbon I've tried so far.

Evan Williams 1783 and Single Barrel get a lot of love in here, but is the regular black label good too? I noticed recently that BCL has it for a very reasonable price.

If you like WT101 definitely try Four Roses Small Batch or Single Barrel. They're even higher on the rye scale, which is what appeals to me the most about WT101.

I've never seen Four Roses here. BCL does have Rittenhouse, but I'm leery of paying $55 CDN for it.

I'll have to start checking out the smaller private stores around here to see what they have. I've found some nice BA stouts and similar rare beers collecting dust in a few places.

^^I really like Evan Williams Black Label. It's not super rich or complex or anything but it is perfectly decent. Great for when friends ask if I have any whiskey. Then again I also like the green label and most people I know who've tried it think it's terrible. I still believe that's mostly because they've also seen the price tag and refuse to believe that anything that goes for $12/bottle could possibly be any good.

Old Grandad 100 is very similar to 101. Fighting Cock 103 is a WT ripoff that is better than Evan Williams.

It's not bad but it's not a standout like the BiB or 114, which are two of my favorite whiskies.

Buy that Weller 12 especially at that price. As far as the other one while the Yellowstone and the Tullamore Dew 12 are intriguing I really like what I've had from Dalmore. I have a bottle of the 12 year sitting on my shelf and I got to sample the cigar malt a while back and that's definitely on my wish list if I ever see it in the wild.
