Huh. Apparently, Foxwoods (casino, northeast US) poker room, as well as giving out free mixed drinks, has a nonzero number of scotches. I ordered a Glenlivet, which was probably smaller than a full glass ordered at a bar/restaurant, but...still. A dollar tip? Pretty cheap!

I tried the Knappogue Castle 12 year Irish whiskey last night; it was good, but very, very mellow. Like, there was barely a hint of burn. Is that others' reactions too? It was just so very different from the bourbon (Evan Williams) and scotch (Balvenie) that I have had.

Small Business Saturday included some liquor stores! Picked up a bottle of WT 101 for 25.99, which is to say a dollar after Amex gives back $25 of it. Good deal, I'd say. Having only had Evan Williams for bourbon, anything special to note when drinking, or just don't worry about the higher proof?

Recommendation time! I'm looking (for a present) for a single bottle of single malt Scotch, on the lighter end of peatiness, and I know he likes Lagavulin and Balvenie double wood. And poo poo like Dewers but let's not go there. Budget is circa 80 bucks, and I've never actually bought a bottle that expensive for myself, so I'm definitely out of my comfort range here! I'm pondering one of the older Glenlivets (I know he has had 12 before), or just rereading the last few pages and going "Oh someone liked x, let's see how much it is", but I wouldn't mind some direction.

Welp, I had a Manhattan at Grill 23 in Boston and they brought this giant cocktail, I requested Woodford Reserve cause I'd never had it before, and it was *really really good*. Like, I definitely have not had a better one yet. Any other bourbons I should try in a Manhattan specifically? I mean, if I'm mixing at home I'll probably keep using my cheap Evan Williams, but when in a nice restaurant with a real bar...

I mean I tend to drink everything neat but I drink loving gin and rum neat, at least the first time I try something. On the topic of the most important American drink, what's the best way to make a whiskey sour? Bourbon, fresh squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup. Ratios?

# ¿ Jul 30, 2015 01:11 |
Is the egg white absolutely necessary, or can I make it without? Not as much worried about contamination, just adds a significant step beyond "squeeze lemon, add stuff, drink", which is "crack egg, separate white, wash hands thoroughly, shake".

So I got to go to a small whiskey tasting at work yesterday, which was nice. There was a rum barrel rye (the guy running it, their group apparently buys barrels sometimes and gets this done), Pappy, and Whistlepig, and of the three, honestly, I liked Whistlepig the most. I guess I like more traditional ryes? The rum scent and initial taste kinda threw me off of the first one.

Do you drink it straight, or tend to make manhattans or old fashioneds or such? I had the whistlepig at a company whiskey tasting and hoo boy it was my favorite of the lot. Rittenhouse bonded is my only other real foray into rye, but I think the whistlepig is next.
