I got a cheap collapsable lightbox off amazon about a year or so ago, but I gave up using it, because I couldnt seem to get the knack of taking a decent picture with it. Whatever I did I'd have to end up adjusting the levels, in the end I just stopped using it because I figured if I was going to have to adjust the white balance anyway, might as well just use a bit of paper as a backdrop and not bother with the lightbox at all. Plus the texture of the fabric backdrops that came with mine were super obvious no matter what I did.
Same. The lightbox was more annoying than useful to me, so I went back to my homemade backdrop with tinfoil sides.

The cheap one I had let you select the colour temperature, so you had a choice of "too yellow" or "too blue", neither of which was ideal.

Anyway, did more painting, obligatory cross post;

SiKboy posted:

I've done some more painting this last couple of weeks! I'll spare you the individual shots, but heres the group shots (all for Malifaux);

A Lucius Mattheson crew, mix of 1e/2e/3e models. I was looking forward to painting these guys, but aside from Agent 46 (back left) and Lucius himself (Next to agent 46, gold mask) I'm not wildly in love with how they turned out, but spending more time on them wasnt improving them, so I called them good and moved on.

And a Marcus crew, mainly 1e metals with a couple of 2e plastics. Contrast over a zenithal did the bulk of the heavy lifting on his beasts tbh, with a bit of extra drybrushing/highlights here and there.

In both cases I much prefer the 3e master models to the 1e/2e ones I have here (I also prefer the look of the 3e lawyers), Its possible I'll pick up their 3e starters at some point and sell on the older ones. Plus that would give me Marcus' order initiates which look cool.

Man, that old Cerberus sculpt is great, it looks like something you'd see in a Warner Bros cartoon.

I much prefer the 3e Marcus and Myranda sculpts, but I much prefer the old Jackalope. The new one is muppet-like, and has a stupid sculpt, while the old one is creepy in a very Gremlins way.

I kinda sorta want to paint more Malifaux, but I have 3 fully painted keywords, so I also kinda sorta want to paint some of all the other warbands and armies I have standing around for other games. I'm only painting single Malifaux models for the various contests that Wyrd's running.

I totally agree on the Jackalope, I'm a little less harsh on the old Myranda. I think the new one is way more dynamic, and the mutating arm gets across the faction way better, but the one I have... Its an unusual pose which I like, but I'm not sold on the... mask? Helmet? I painted it as a mask. Combined with the hair it gives a sort of rabbit-like look. I dont hate it, I'm just really not sure what they were going for.

I feel like I should probably paint something other than Malifaux, but I'm in a groove now and have a backlog that I should probably clear before buying more things!

Got around to taking photos of the Malifaux crew I painted a few weeks ago; Ma Tuckets Tricksy crew, all 2E models, though the sculpts for these ones havent changed for 3E AFAIK.

Ma Tucket herself (featuring some iffy freehand on the dress!)

Her totem, the Little Lass (featuring some even more iffy freehand which was luckily rendered almost invisible by the wash...)

The Bushwhackers (green chamo with green skin is not my favourite thing to paint...)

And the Rooster Riders. Note my restraint at not making a single "gremlins with massive cocks" joke.

The crew together:

I'm particularly pleased with the Rooster Riders tbh, they sat in my pile of shame for a ridiculous amount of time because I had major paralysis with starting them.

Bonus shot of the whole keyword that I have (need to get the big brain brin and his amazing educated animals box at some point, they look fun)

I didnt post a solo shot of Trixiebelle in the mini painting thread because I didnt want to have to be like "Look, she came as part of the box, and I didnt SCULPT the loving things...". A friend of mine who was at my house when the box set arrived from ebay occasionally still asks "did you paint the titty gremlin yet?". Like, I get what they were going for, a sort of Daisy Duke from the dukes of hazard, but theres no real denying that yes, I have now painted the titty gremlin. Also, if you know the figures you'll note that one of the bushwhackers is only from the waist up. This is because a) I didnt like the scale of him next to the rest, its less obvious if hes wading through waist-deep swamp than it is is if hes the same height as the other two despite sitting down cross legged, and b) I needed a spare gremlin foot to repair another model I'd got off ebay where they had, very artfully, photographed one figure turned so the fact he was missing a foot was impossible to tell from the photo and put "sold as seen" in the description. So two birds with one stone, the bushwhacker with the stuffed bird disguise became a leg donor.

That's a lot of players! People around here still go "That's not by Games Workshop, so no..." whenever I try to introduce them to Malifaux, and that's just kinda sad.

Yeah, I broadly agree, I do like the idea, but it is a real fine line. In the specific context of the redneck gremlin crew, you can kind of go, "Oh, I get it, its daisy duke/the crushinator from futurama/the beverly hillbillies/assorted other media where the inbred hillbillies have a stacked daughter crossed with gremlins 2" but as a figure in isolation its a bit "oh, thats one of those weird unnecessary cheesecake miniatures".

Exactly, it works in context but can so easily come across as kinda sketchy. It is going to depend on the audience even, some people will get the humour others just won't.

Got in my first 50SS game vs my regular opponent, we'd mostly been doing henchmen hardcore + 30SS games otherwise.

So much fun, ran Parker vs his Rasputina and it was a bloodbath. Had a very rough turn one, but his inability to seal the deal and take out Sue + Doc let me turn the tide and blow away everyone by end of turn three except for Snow Storm and the cat.

Rasputina looks like a very annoying match up, glad I had a heap of 'remove markers' abilities.

The game kind of withered in my area but a friend of mine and I are pulling out all the stops to revive it. He’s buying more than a dozen crews in all factions to have loaners, we bought mats, we’re printing a ton of terrain, running demo games, putting on a league and tournaments with personally funded prize support etc. Malifaux rules and 3e is a solid ruleset.

I think the Guild half of that starter is a weird mix because if it was all gun people or all fire mages it would tread on other factions toes. Unfortunately, they just end up with some very bland looking units, though I'm curious how the emplacement gunners work in Malifaux. I like the game a lot, but Abyssinia is the right choice if you're going human side.

Competitively, how much do you feel the game rewards people with a deep roster? The crews I like are scattered across different factions, but it seems like list-building being a part of game setup really encourages you to stick to one faction.

I think having 2-3 masters in a single faction with sufficiently different play styles will give you everything you need to compete on every strat and scheme pool. Sure, you probably could eke some marginal value out of completing a faction, but it would be very marginal. The important thing in Malifaux is knowing your crew inside and out.

That said, there are tons of ways to play Malifaux, and there are tournament formats that lock you to a single master or subset of your faction. Most players pick 1-3 masters they like and stick with them. And while I’d love to see a return of tournament Malifaux, the game is still struggling irl if we’re honest, so most of your games will be against friends. Pick a crew you like and buy it!

Well done!

I’ve been pushing to get Malifaux up and running in my region, as previously mentioned, and progress is being made. Two 40K friends of mine just picked up Titania and Nexus, and an employee of our LGS got Jakob. I’ve also been cranking out 3D printed terrain. My partner in this is handling the painting half of the terrain while I handle the printing, and so I don’t have any completed projects to show you all yet, but so far our plans are:
-Cemetery table (done)
-Village table (done)
-Streets of Malifaux table, very dense with buildings (in progress)
-Trainyard table using Rocket Pig Studios trains and station (concept)
-Casino table, where all of the terrain is slot machines and roulette wheels and big, winding bars (mostly done)
-Bayou table with little pools and slum dwellings (in progress)
-Dreamer’s Playroom table with giant twisted toys (concept)
-Bikini Bottom table decorated exclusively with spongebob themed aquarium pieces from Chewy (done, and it looks incredible)

I love any mat that has the deployments and stuff on them. That really helps, especially with new players. Looks like you got a mats by Mars there, that would have been my only suggestion. Maybe buying/printing the schemes and strategies for two players so they are physically at hand, that's one thing that slows us down is looking those up. If you plan to play on a specific night, it can be handy to flip for those at the end of the night so that come next week everyone can be ready to go but that doesn't always work out depending on group.

I love that feeling when a group of people are into Malifaux(or any game but I've only experienced it with Malifaux) and everyone is just excited to talk about what happened in their last game or their plans for the next one.

I'm still in lockdown and looking to engage in my favourite hobby, buying things. I dabbled in Malifaux when it first came out but the scene died off when other games took over. Despite having a bunch of GW stuff I suspect I am going to get frustrated by game imbalances when I finally can play and will mainly just collect their stuff to model and play the odd game for fun. Actually I am amazed that GW still can't get things like apps right when Wyrd/Corvus have had great working digital stuff for years. Most of the small scale TTG's look more appealing to me at the moment, so I will probably end up with MCP, Infinity and Malifaux collections if the games are good. Every card is available in Wyrd's free app for Malifaux, you do not need to buy them for rules. Each faction book comes with ~3 short stories plus blurbs for every model in them, so I considered them worth buying since I'm a lore fiend.
