Mailfaux is indeed, excellent.

After years of feigning interest in GW games, and Warmachine, my Missus plays a miniatures game. She's far better at it than I am though, but we are looking at entering a doubles tournament in the new year so I'm hoping she carries my sorry rear end.

Currently playing Colette, but looking to move into Nicodem and the Resurrectionist faction.

Goddamit I love this game.

I've wanted to play this for a little bit, but keep having problems. My usual group's usual store is changing warehouses, and generally struggling to import certain Wyrd items. One of my potential opponents didn't receive the scultped bases he wants to put the minis on, and I bought the Lilith box set, but never managed to get Young Nephilim.
(The Terror Tot Nephilim can grow into Young Nephilim, which can in turn grow into Mature Nephilim by spending Blood tokens from defeated enemies or, if you field Lilith, soulstones. Lilith's starter box comes with three terror tots and one mature, but no Young ones.)

So, we've got armies in various states of incompleteness. Still, hopefully we'll be able to get a game in eventually.

I'd suggest going with what you've got !

The growing aspect of Lilith is excellent, but don't be fooled into thinking it's the be all and end all of her. She hits like a truck, the mature hits like a truck and the tots are pretty drat fast and fighty for a 3 stone model.

So her basic box gives you a perfectly usable core at small stone levels. It's all speedy enough to grab objectives and hard hitting enough to keep them. I found Malifaux to be a very simple game to grasp, rendered extremely complex by all the card interactions, so I can certainly see the merits in pretty much ignoring a mechanic such as growing and maturing tots, while you get the rest of the game down.

Also, don't forget some of the other crazily good stuff in the Faction as a whole that might slot in.

I'd punch a nun to be able to put a Doppleganger in my Arcanists or Ressers.

Just got done playing a game with my son.

He's had his Freikorps for a couple of weeks, and has been itching to have a game against the Neverborn. So I purloined my wifes Pandora crew for the afternoon.

He took the contents of the Von Schill starter, a very solid 25 stone crew.
I used Pandora, Baby Kade, Teddy and a Doppleganger.

Turns out, much as in Evir Gibson's battle report, the Doppleganger was very much the dogs bollocks. Mimic'd Pandora while she softened up the Freikorps with spells, then switched to support and mimic Teddy when the terrible, terrible biting began.

Pandora, it turns out, is a lot more fun to play with than to play against.

Swings and round-a-bouts really. Depends on the crew I'm running and how the game is going.

My friend plays a Ramos crew, and constantly loses hard and it gets him down that he's yet to have one win. Is there a trick to using Ramos? He just seems much more limited than other masters and I felt bad that I was chewing through his guys without him putting the hurt on me.

I think Ramos is pretty limited. Not many tricks but what he does, he does well. The Electrical Creation is quite a nasty little bugger, and spiders / swarms are surprisingly fighty, so running a toolkit and getting your summon on is a viable option, but there needs to be scrap counters to fuel this, so it's more a tactic of attrition than overwhelming. Practice of when to swarm together and when to scatter the individual arachnids is key.

I guess my only real suggestion without knowing too much would be to not be afraid to look beyond constructs. The contents of the Kaeris box could possibly give him an entire new string to his bow if he's currently really quite close to the standard Ramos box.

Binbag
May 10, 2007
If he's running the toolkit, I think he really should be running Arachnid Swarms. Then he can bolster them as they take damage through the game, and the individual arachnids he summons become a chunk more useful.

If he's into fewer, larger constructs then maybe the Brass Arachnid...

That being said, Leveticus has a similar vibe but is loving nuts.

I think the key word, is starter.

Some are a bit lovely, and a couple drop an excellent 25 stone crew in your lap.

On another note, two of my mates are dead keen to be shown some Malifaux. This is a good thing. But, and I don't know how to say this without sounding like a right prick, one of them is a bit slow on the uptake and has real trouble with stats and abilities and things. There's nothing the matter with him, he's just not that mentally agile and is extremely argumentative.

Any ideas about the best way to demo the game to him ? For a bit of history, I have known him for almost 20 years and we met when I worked in GW and was teaching him WFB. I almost got sacked that day it went so well. I think I have more patience these days, but I can honestly say he has not changed a bit over the years.

I don't even know where to start.

My Missus wants me to buy and paint a second crew for her as a birthday gift, and she's settled on Lilith.

Thinking a box, a blister of youngs, Lelu & Lilutu and a Cherub should be a decent jump off point. Do we reckon this is going to give her enough options for growing tots etc ? Or anyone got any other suggestions ?

Got the colour scheme sorted, just need to figure out what to daub it onto now.

Cheers for that.

Even though Ressers are my main squeeze, I am thinking the twins are going to be the way forward. I am thinking that in 35 stone games, it might relegate the tots to speedy little objective grabbers and position swapping targets for Lil, with the option to grow if it comes up.

Might look to chuck a Shaman in there too. Will save Nekima for the next time I gently caress up and need some emergency brownie points.

Well, it's Mrs Binbags birthday today, and the painted Lilith crew went down well. I'll get some pictures next time we get some gaming in.

So now I can move onto getting my Christmas loot painted. Got a McMourning and a Nicodem box, all the zombie dogs in the world and some Belles and totems. I'm planning my next buy already, and am thinking of a bit hitter. My usual opponents are Pandora, Von Schill and loving Leveticus, and Lilith too now I suppose.

I know I want some crooked men, and probably some crooligans for their creepy victorian vibe but I am getting a bit stuck with a beatstick option.

Bette Noir seems like a nice compliment to Nicodem. All that paralysis :3: and seems like she could be a proper bastard against Levi.

Killjoy looks like a bigger, fatter, chompier option than Bete. Less options to get him into play, but that shouldn't be a problem.

I hate the model for the rogue necromancy, but it's summonable. So are flesh golems, but they're a bit less fighty and running too many is going to be a serious drain.

Any ideas gentlemen ?

I had thought about the Rider, but not too seriously as my buddy who plays Levi runs it quite often. I am mostly a fluffy player so I'd prefer not to duplicate anything across crews that is so individual.

I was leaning toward Bete, I think she'll come in handy against most crews. Plus with a cheeky Bolster from Nico she should be ok going toe to toe with most stuff. The double neg on ranged attacks had slipped my mind. Cheers for that, I think my mind is made up.

My son picked up the Viktorias today, taking his Freikorps to a very worrying 35 stones. I'm really looking forward to seeing how that changes the Von Schill box, though I am imagining that to being a very short and painful lesson.

If it's just the rules you're after, then the little rules manual is sound value for money. It has all the rules, non of the stats and no fluff, so it's a little dry but has everything you need to play.

I think the only big fat rule book I would buy at this point is Twisting Fates. All the juicy avatar rules are nice to have an idea about as they can radically change the nature of masters you might be used to playing against.

Colette is my first love in Malifaux, gorgeous models and a blast to play.

The only thing I would say bad about her, is that I do feel that when I'm playing her I spend a lot of time playing by myself and my opponent is fairly irrelevant as many of your interactions are with your own crew.

Slutty Nurses injecting people with fatally dangerous medications is my latest obsession.

High-heels and a flagrant disregard for health, safety and common sense makes for good times whichever side of the fence you fall on.

Iggy looks so much nicer than I imagined. With the way the new sculpts for things like Avatar Nico and Bete Noir are so close to the art, I cannot wait to get my filthy paws on a Similacrum 29.

I am starting to think that the minimum effort board I am putting together for a minimum effort battle report is going to look really poo poo. Still, hope to be able to post some hot girl on girl action early next week once I have pressganged my useless kids into building daddies toy town, and finally finished off Colette's painting, and wept as the Missus Lilith crew has bullied me to death.

I've been struggling what to do with my Rezzers, so I signed up for the Iron Painter contest on the Wyrd Forums. I expect to go out in the first round, but am hoping that the "mystery ingredient" theme will encourage me to do an interesting job on them.

I'll post the results...

Had my first game in a long while today, my Colette against my mate's Leveticus crew.

Nothing too interesting to report. I got bummed.

Corner deployment. My performer rattled off a quick power ritual and the ladies went off to do their thing.

Jammed a Coryphee and a mannequin into Levi at the top of turn two, which diverted him long enough for the other Coryphee and Cassandra to complete two more corners. Was hoping that they might survive into the next turn so the Coryphee could deliver the message. She drew a lot of hate, and eventually went down. But this did take his entire crew as I threw Soul Stones at it like they were going out of fashion.

Cassandra was well onto her way to the last corner, but it was still a bit jammed up with stuff. She got to the sabotage target and achieved that objective, but I failed to spot a Waif milling about in a pack of Steam Punk Abominations. Levi resurrected in a very good spot and blasted her down with his horrific spell list, bagging him an easy Kill Protege.

The Dead Rider wasn't tremendously effective, running around killing doves. Truth to tell, I was setting up for a series of soulstone detonations on his grouped up Steam Punk Aboms. So I guess it was still being an rear end in a top hat. Dead Rider wound up in front of Colette, who cast disappearing act and burnt a soulstone hoping for the mannequin replacement. It didn't come off, but I could dump the rider out of harms way.

Except, through the gap left by the now vanished rider came a pack of four Steam Punk Aboms, who merged into a Desolation engine which delivered the message (Shared strategy.)

With me rocking 3 vp, and him having achieved both his schemes and the strategy, we called it and conducted the customary autopsy.

This was the first time these two crews had squared off, and it was quite an interesting game. He was completely caught off guard by the speed of the Showgirls, and found them surprisingly resilient for low wound models. Also the ability for everybody to use Soul Stones, and the number you can get through was something that he found to be a stumbling block.

Me, I found Levi to be a proper horrible bastard. I knew he was going to be tricky, but I didn't anticipate him being quite so quick and quite so good at everything. Rusty Alice also, a pain in the arse to a construct heavy crew. Dead rider I wasn't hugely impressed with, but Aboms and the Desolation Engine....gently caress me.

Quality game though, and a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Been a while since we've seen crew shots, so here goes...

Little bits of finishing off to do, and bases to jazz up a bit. Ordered myself another Flesh Construct and a Rogue Necromancy so there's still a couple of big lads to get built and popped in.

Again, little bits to look at and bases to tart up. But they look decent on the table.

The little fellas from Mrs Binbag's Lilith crew, I'm actually a lot happier with these than the picture merits. The hair goes right up to white, the cloth is a lot smoother and the flesh is less monotone. She wanted bright green to be her "Neverborn Magic" colour, so it follows through all her NB stuff to a degree.

Her Pandora crew is my latest obsession. Great fun to paint so far, just waiting on an Alt Pandora to turn up as I can't stand the regular miniature.

Yeah, 2 nurses is too many.

To be honest, I'd be inclined to give them a miss at the moment. They do have uses, like with Sue or McTavish and with Avatars. They can be really handy in general too, but they tend to be very situational and there are models you'll tend to use an awful lot more. You'll get a surprising amount of use out of a couple of Belles.

It's a shame really, as it was the one nurse with the smaller needle and tray of stuff that really sold me on McM.

Binbag
May 10, 2007
You can only have 8 stones sadly.

If you're kinda stuck with 2 Nurses, I'm sure you'll find a way to make them work. They can hit surprisingly hard, and Harmless is always nice. I have a theory that they are really designed with McM in mind, and that they should really be used to turn dogs into missiles. McM doesn't need the body counters as such, being as he can pull bits off people. I've never made it work though.

Plus they look awesome with the good Doctor, and that's all that matters really!

Binbag
May 10, 2007
Aye, McMourning is a coward. I find it quite cool and thematic, but against certain crews it's a huge pain in the arse.

A nice pile of soulstones will help, also Von Schill is handy to keep close to the Doctor and his living minions. He's fast enough, stout at range and gives a nice buff to WP in morale duels. He's a big chunk of stones though, and deviates from the Frankensinian theme, but from a cash money point of view, he's the gift that keeps on giving.

loving hell, that thing is impressive.

I guess if would need to fit on a 40mm round base, and looking at the size indicator I would estimate it'd fit with a minimum of tinkering.

Part of me thinks yes, it'd be too big as it appears to be absolutely massive. But part of me thinks it's right up my street designwise and Chompy should be huge. I don't play Dreamer, but I am actually really tempted.

Binbag
May 10, 2007
Von Schill himself is ace, I am a massive fan. He's fast and shoots really well, and really resilient too so you can rely on him to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

The Librarian is probably the most complex piece in the box and she is excellent support for Von Schill. If you use her for nothing more than healing you'll likely get your moneys worth from her.

The trapper is cracking. You can get it near an objective, or set up in a dominant firing position to start whipping wounds off advancing enemies from the start.

The specialist is one of my favourite models in the game. His shooting is a fairly moderate range but quite versatile, and his blasts are great at softening up the enemy.

The Freikorpsmen are solid, cheap minions. Nothing too exciting, but certainly not a liability.

All in all, the Freikorp play best as a combined arms type of force in my opinion. Soften things up with the sniper and the flamethrower and finish them with Von Schill. Troubleshoot with the Freikorpsmen, or use them to deal with objectives. Your wounds stat is fairly low across the board, and it's not entirely mitigated by your excellent Freikorps armour, so don't be shy about spreading the healing love from your librarian.

Also, you're a lot less effective in melee so stick and move wherever you can and try not to get caught. You're no slouch in melee, but range is where you shine so play to that strength. The Korps are very, very fun to play and I think they are a bit underestimated. In a game full of zombies, robots and wizards, a bunch of German dudes with knives and kneepads seems a bit mundane, but that's half the appeal for me, in fact my Von Schill crew is shaping up to be my tournament crew. Good luck.

Binbag
May 10, 2007
Blisteringly well. He's fast enough to keep up with McMourning, and a solid range attack before McM gets stuck in can really help prevent retaliation against him. +4 wp against morale aura is really handy for McM too.

He's extremely handy against other Resser crews, as he can destroy corpse counters, and he can give constructs slow so he can be very handy against some Arcanists and some Guild crews.

My only problem with him, is that I sometimes fall into the trap of running Von Schill with McM backing him up, and at that point I'd be better off running the Freikorps.

Binbag
May 10, 2007
Aye, it's dogshit. I had to rebuild a neck for the sabretooth head, and one of the legs was so bent it snapped when I was trying to get it straight again. Didn't enjoy painting it at all either, probably as I had a ragestroke building the drat thing, so it's done enough to field and I have managed to summon it once then avatar Ramos hosed it up in short order.

It kept Ramos busy long enough to let McM run off and destroy some evidence so I won the game, so not a total bust by any stretch but we are not on speaking terms. I'm hoping it pays off in the future though, and the fact it lives in my case is a nice security blanket.

Binbag

The Desolation Engine is an absolute monster when run with a master who dallies about with Steampunk Abominations. Leveticus is the undisputed master of SPA's, and will make any resser cry with his ability to summon models. It really is a great thing, but probably not too hot for McMourning. I suppose, if his healing works on it he can mitigate it's inherent wound taking thingy, but for the stone cost I think there's other things I would take over it. Maybe if you took SPA's too it'd work, but really I think it synergies well with Leveticus and not much else except maybe Nicodem.

If you're wanting a big melee beatstick, my latest crush is Killjoy, or Avatar McMourning might be an option. You could even use the Deso Engine as a fairly convincing Simulacrum 29 if you went down the Avatar route.

But at the least stick it in a box, and treat yourself to a Leveticus crew in the future. He's a tricky master to get to grips with, but is extremely tough and very interesting to play. The only problem I've heard of with Levi, is that once you go down that route other masters seem less interesting to use.

I am desperately trying to justify the cost of a Dead Justice box to myself, that's got to be a lovely looking addition to a Resser crew. I reckon with that and some of the bits from your McM crew you could buy Nicodem in a blister and get some mileage out of the Deso Engine.

As I understand it, if any of those sight lines cross a blocking or obscuring thing, then you have partial LoS as long as at least one sight line exists between you and the target. If none of the sight lines cross blocking or obscuring stuff, you have full LoS. I believe Partial LoS is a negative flip to Ranged attacks.

Must admit though, it's not really come up for me so far.

Tempted to start a Flesh Construct allowing me to focus solely on summoning the Rogue Necromancy. Suggestions are very welcome.

I like starting with the construct up. He can be a bit of a drain on your hand, but he's a nice place to use the Black Joker if you draw it. They are surprisingly quick up the board, can give McM a nice piece to hide behind or scalpel sling into if he needs to make a sharp exit from a tight spot, and can stand taking a wound or two if the doctor needs an extra couple of body parts to get the Rogue Necromancy summoned.

I've never been disappointed with a flesh construct, but never seem to get any decent mileage out of Sebastian and the dogs. Plus, it's 1 activation rather than 3 so it might speed your games up, allowing you more time to achieve your schemes.

Frame for Murder on Bete is a laugh. Pop out near a master and start the killing, you get a degree of control over when she dies thanks to One with The Night, and she demands dealing with so Frame for Murder works well with Assassinate and things like that too. I've stopped taking Bodyguard on McMourning, so I can hurl him into mental situations willy-nilly. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes he gets murdered, but it always results in a big hole in the enemy crew at the very least.

My wife is a Teddy nut. She loves the big guy in her Pandora crew. I think he's a tough sell for 9 stones, if he had just a little more survivability he'd be ace, but he's right in the sweet spot for a couple of 4 or 5 point minions to kill him in one activation.

Kade is a nice little 6 pointer that can help Teddy out, and might fit thematically. But the greatest strength of Teddy is that, particularly people who have never played against him, folks do tend to overestimate him. Plonk him on an objective and people will think twice about it, or commit far more force than he really merits. That and his great big gently caress off teeth.

I think you're selling the big guy a bit short. Last game I played, my friend was running the dreamer and dropped a Teddy in the middle of my army. I lucked out on him not getting a sever flip on the teeth, it could one-shot everything in my army except the Peacekeeper. And it still took 3 models focusing on him for a turn to bring him down.

I quite possibly am a bit hard on Teddy, but that's because I want to love him and he always seems to be not quite good enough. He's a great and characterful miniature and is so Malifaux it hurts but he just lacks a little something, a point of armour or object and I'd be sold. Melee expert and I'd soil my drawers.

I can see him being ace in a Dreamer crew, or in a crew running the Weaver Widow. Movement shenanigans or being able to summon him into combat would help massively. Hell, if you can wangle obeys with Zoraida he might shine. Must admit, I run Nicodem more than anything else these days, and tend to judge things survivability in terms of how they stand up to Punk Zombies under bolster, which may not be entirely fair.

But basically, Dominion is right. Killjoy is the answer.

Fundamentally I absolutely agree, the investment in AP / other models to get rid to ItI is too high when the Mature Nephilim is hovering about. But if Lungboy is wanting to use him in his Zoraida crew, then getting rid of ItI is going to be pretty key.

I wonder about the Doppleganger. You'd win the majority of initiative flips which has to help Teddys survivability. You'd gain access to another use of Zoraida's awesome spell list. Hell, you can even mimic one of Teddys attacks and support him that way.

She's an expensive model, but I absolutely love her flexibility.

I think the commonly accepted rule is that you can't get rid of the Slow from being summoned by discarding a card, nor can you gain Fast by discarding a Joker.

I believe that this is because you would discard to remove the Slow caused by Dumb, but would still have the Slow from the summon in place which you can't get rid of.

I don't necessarily think this is right, but I believe it's been ruled on. Shame really, it would make the Flesh Construct an amazing summon if you could bin the card to get rid of Slow.

Necropunks cannot seriously be 3 stones each. They are crazy good for their cost, and would be a bargain at 4 or even 5 points a pop. Absolutely spectacular, covering so much ground, interacting with dynamite markers, killing Hollow Waifs that thought they were safe...tremendous.
