I am going to see The Mousetrap in St. Martin's theater on a Saturday. Do you guys have any tips for a pre-theatre dinner in the area? Nothing too fancy, preferably around 50 £ per person w/o drinks

You’re going to be literally opposite the Ivy, which has a pre-6pm set menu. Hawksmoor Seven Dials is just around the corner, and also does one for £25-28pp.

The Ivy looks nice and is literally.opposite like you said, thanks, I'll forward this to my friends as suggestion.

Is there any new food thing I should try while in London? Not bubble waffle hype like but maybe new place with awesome street food of x variety. Leather Lane food market is on the agenda anyway, plus a trip to Greenwich market.

Hey everyone, any recommendations for a central/West cocktail bay for a first date?

I realise that Central/West and not ruinously expensive is a hard ask, but preferably somewhere at the cheaper end of the London cocktail bar scale.

Thanks!

Be At One, if you're not snobby about chains is decent and do BOGOF on the quieter nights as I recall. Arts Theatre Club is a speakeasy style place near Soho Square is nice, don't remember the pricing but not too costly.

They’re asking people to buy dining/gift cards. The owner put up a video:
https://vimeo.com/415676740

And this was the email text:

quote:

Extraordinary times can sometimes necessitate unusual actions – particularly when the situation becomes serious and unprecedented such as the situation we find ourselves in currently. I wouldn't normally talk to you by video, but if you do have a couple of minutes, please watch the above as I am able to explain quickly and in more detail why we need your help.

In short, we in the catering industry have had a terrible shock, in that the Government furlough scheme we thought would look after our employees, does not include tronc, (or service charge,) in the calculation of wages, which ordinarily boosts earnings by 60% and is the staff's chosen way of receiving remuneration. This a payment that is taxed, and they have come to rely on, meaning many will have insufficient to house and feed their families.

We have done all we can and topped up their wages in March and April but our money is running out quickly. And this is why I am writing to you now. What I am asking is that you buy Dining Vouchers in advance - for any amount that you wish - that can be redeemed in all restaurants across the group without any time limit. For every voucher we will give 50% directly to the staff as income replacement.

We would appreciate any help you can give. I hope you and your families are staying safe and we look forward to welcoming you when this is all over.

Best wishes,

Jeremy King

Just as a note in case anyone is reading and not sure about helping out a big group, I've done work placing interns for kitchen and waiting work and this group was really helpful giving some European kids free training in dining work. They're a good group and definitely gave actual work experience and training for them.

And to answer another potential question - gift cards at times like this really do help. I had been a bit unsure about it as it means the business has a liability to provide goods/service in the future but an economics podcast (planet money probably) did a feature about stuff like this and made a very convincing argument. It’s essentially a 0% interest loan to the business and many people never even claim their gift amount so some proportion of the liability often gets written off.

Perhaps that’s obvious to other people but it helped clarify things for me!

Just noticed a burger place near me name Bins, they seem to be expanding pretty fast? The presentation in store and on the apps seems to be very much like McDonald's, much better looking than one would expect of a small chain. The menu seems to aim for the same demos as McD's except halal, similar fries, buns etc. Seems like a decent alternative at least. Just thought it was interesting, maybe can learn more when their website is up. The chicken rosti burger is good.

Bim's appears to just be in Ilford and Walthamstow so far, and their website has been under construction since last year. I'm not imagining a massive expansion any time soon. Do you know other branches?

I had the mojito, it could maybe be clearer but it's non-alcoholic, but you may guess from it costing the same as other softdrinks. Inferior to mojito 7up you can get in Europe (or specialist eBay sellers)

Real talk: not so much. About 20 years ago, they used to make Entenmann’s stuff here in the UK under license, but that died back in 2004 apparently. Anything you see now is going to be imported at high prices.

Make friends with people on US military bases (well maybe not right now given 'roni). My wife is part of the British chapter (technically Greater London but its not like there's any other ones over here) of her sorority and half the members are in the US Air Force, which means events often happen on bases, which means a chance to hand some dollars to one of those air force members and go shopping on their base BX. They have All The American Things even including fresh meat which is otherwise just not going to be available over here.

Feel like res'ing the thread for a few reasons.

I know there's been plague but these US outfits are taking their sweet time launching. The new Wendie's in Stratford looks like it will be open soon, but no date anywhere it seems. Likewise of Popeye's and that announcement was March. Hard to check as there are already places called "Popeye's chicken" around, just independents probably cheekily trying to play off name recognition.

But moving away from US chains I think I'm going to try to get to Jollibee soon, I just saw Food Insider's comparison of the UK and US menus, although it looks a shame we don't get the peach and mango pies. Really sold me on the chicken though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9mdVVXPHgQ

And keeping an eye on Marugame opening in a couple of weeks, just saw it whilst at Liverpool Street set up for training so it looked open. They have Coke Freestyle machines, and I feel like I've yet to find London's best ramen yet.

Any recommendations? Tenders or fried chicken? I'm curious about the burgers, I guess that's a matter of how good the sauce is?

Oh, also off the back of Food Insider I hit up Wing Stop a couple of times, think I need to try regular wings and some of the hotter coatings but Lemon Pepper boneless wings are lovely. Good Churros too but a touch pricey.
