You are also close to SE Soho which has Koya, Opuz for excellent kebabs, Cay Tre, Rosa's, etc.

I lunch around there most weekdays. Timber Yard does great coffee, cakes (coconut zucchini bread) sandwiches and quiche. There's a Bill's too, and Monmouth up the street. I can rarely justify Kopapa but it is excellent. Up on Charring Cross there's Foyles bookstore cafe (on the top floor) and Chipotle then you're into SOHO with tonnes of options. Also there's a Nisbets on Shaftsbury Ave.. kitchen porn.

It's not too far...

I went to school in Golders Green all those years ago, and I was about to suggest Cafe Japan... but it looks like there has been a spate of very negative reviews lately which is a shame as it was the bollocks back then. Might be worth poking your head round the door to see if you get a good feeling about if you're ever in GG for some reason, but it looks like its not worth a special trip out there any more.

You're right by Wing Yip, the huuuuge Chinese supermarket, which has 2 very nice restaurants in it. Also, you're like, 10 mins from me!

Not so sure about Cricklewood but there's some stuff around Kilburn these days. Ariana II is probably the restaurant of note on the high road itself. It's a pretty good Afghan. Near Kilburn Tube you have the North London Tavern and the Kilburn Ironworks. The Ironworks just reopened as a hipstery gastro pub situation with some ok opening buzz and North London tavern has been that for a while. I've never had food there, though.

My favourite takeaway in the immediate area there is probably Speedy Noodles. It's extremely takeaway chinese but oddly good. I mean, I'm usually all about genuine chinese etc. but man, speedy noodles hits the spot for me for some reason. Plus, it's very very cheap. I don't know how much they charge for delivery since I just pop down normally.

I'm midway between Kilburn and West Hampstead so I'm not sure if you can get stuff from the Tiffin Tin where you are but that's my indian takeaway of choice.

Kilburn is only a 5-10 minute walk away, and I think I can use the bus on my Oyster season ticket, so thanks for the recommendations.

Followup, any recommended pubs/bars for a first date, maybe more around West Hampstead?

Just confirming you can use buses on a travelcard. The zones don't matter either. A zone one season ticket gets you on all London buses.

A question of my own: does anyone have recommendations on a good place to get haggis, eating out or cooking at home doesn't matter.

The butcher on Tottenham Lane in Crouch End definitely has them, and it's a good place so they are probably decent. (I get biltong there).

Pitt Cue Co is the best but it's an absolute bugger to get in.

HotBox on Commercial St is meant to be excellent but I haven't been.

Bodeans is decent for a place that you'll actually be able to go without any hassle.

Talking of West Hampstead, this is where to get the best ribs I've ever had (commercially): http://www.one-sixty.co.uk/ Just a small walk up West End Lane from the tube/overground/thameslink. Their burgers are not great but the ribs and wings are pretty amazing at least, also actually good coleslaw and pickles etc. edit: I know this whole post makes me sound like a west hampstead/kilburn partisan but I genuinely think onesixty is the best bbq place in london right now, but gently caress what do I know.

As for pubs to go out on a date with, the Black Lion (again, a little up on west end lane) is pretty nice but I always find that generally it all gets a bit weird and posh-hipster up that way but that's just my personal taste. For more general food stuff, Wet Fish Cafe is good general european bistro type of stuff with good lunchtime deals. La Brocca is good generalised italian in the same area. There's also the Alice House but I found it pricy, boring and just generally meh. There's a branch of Guglee there which is always decent for southern-ish Indian but only five minutes farther up is the Tiffin Tin which I personally prefer.

Other good reasonable date pub pub is more down on kilburn: The Priory Tavern on 250 Belsize road. They have a good spirits selection too. The Earl Derby on Kilburn high road itself is a reasonable boozer but skip the food; it used to be far better. It's still finding its feet and tends to be a little empty.

There's also always the Czech Pub (place still owns though the staff has changed a lot in recent years). The Czech Pub is, well, more homey so it depends on the date but well worth going for a quirky place with reasonably priced pilsner and good central european food. It's a place with history and basically just plonked in a former detached house. Used to be the place to watch ice hockey world cup but last couple of times I've been in there the TVs have been on the blink so not sure about that one now. Mind you, not sure where else would be better to watch it in the area.

I just had extremely good tapas for lunch in Crouch End at Bar Esteban. I think it's the best Spanish food I've had in London. We just had V dishes: pan con tomate, tortilla, fried aubergine with honey and walnuts, crispy chickpeas, spinach with pine nuts and raisins. Everything was absolutely delicious. With a coffee and service, the bill was £24. Really really good. We are DEFINITELY going back. They also do weekend brunch.

I'm up in Muswell Hill. I actually suggested this place to my mum today as she's getting married in a few weeks and I thought this could work well for a nice low-key wedding dinner (which is what she wants.)

Rosa's Thai bottom of Dean Street. Maoz falafel on Old Compton; very casual but good and all veg, reasonably priced. Taro on Old Compton; Japanese ramen cafeteria style, cheapish and tasty.

Can anyone suggest somewhere good for cocktails near bank?

Two caveats: Partner will be coming straight from Eurogamers (and will look like it) and I am gimpy so nowhere that is standing room or has horrible furniture.

Went to Brasserie Zedel bar a few weeks ago and it was full of oligarchs on a stag night (not sure why they'd escaped their city/kennsington prison, but hey...), their perfect manhatten is perfect though.

Merchant House, which is expensive but has amazing rum and gin. I also really like the gin bar in the Barbican. A little further afield: Hawksmoor in Spitalfields (their full fat old fashionends are amazing) or Happiness Forgets in Hoxton.
