I'm glad someone else is trying this out. I'm surprised it was Gaffigan, of all people. I really like his style, even if everyone else in my family hates him for some reason. I just hope he doesn't revisit the Hot Pockets bit.

I think it was just for King Baby, because I don't remember him doing it at all in Beyond the Pale or on his Comedy Central Presents episode. It did get grating really quickly, though, since there were times he would do a solid minute of them.

He did it a ton in Beyond the Pale, I think maybe less in King Baby (I haven't listened to that one in a while). I find it funny but can see how it could be grating after a while.

I look forward to this, I think he's a funny dude and seems like a good guy so hopefully it works out. Definitely curious to see what kind of sales he does since he doesn't have the name recognition of a guy like Louis.

OK, as I was typing a response, I remembered him pretty much starting Beyond the Pale with one of those, and it happening a bunch throughout. I guess it didn't start to wear on me until King Baby, then. Sorry for the misinformation!

Just watched "I Am Comic" a few weeks ago, and Gaffigan complained (complained is probably the wrong word, since he seems to consider it a compliment to be recognized) that people will just yell HOOOOOOOT POCKET at him on the street, and he doesn't really know how to respond to that. Sounded like he didn't really want to have that be his "git 'er dun"

I'll admit that hearing the Hot Pockets bit on Comedy Central Presents is what roped me into listening to him more, but it kida makes me sad that it's become that for him. I remember listening to King Baby for the first time and hearing him mention the words "Hot Pocket", and then hearing the audience go absolutely nuts. The worst.

I hope this actually becomes a thing now. I mean, I'm willing to pay so much for a stand-up album, but I know that the stand-ups themselves don't see as much of the profits as they really should, and the whole DRM free thing is a nice touch.

Yeah, I think the drop off in fans came from the material degrading to "Look at how wacky I am!" and "Remember the late 80s to mid 90s?", and the internet "hatred" came from an oddly inflated ego. I also liked his first CD, couldn't tell you a single thing on the second even though I own it, and couldn't really sit through that Comedy Central special with the rotating stage for more than a few minutes.

e: It's not necessarily his best bit, but it's pretty representative of why I love him. The whole thing is just absurd, and it slowly turns from a standup routine into a 1-man show.

e2: Any other goons gonna see him in Philly on August 11th?

I'm normally on the side of the "It's just words" thing as well, but there's a pretty big difference between telling bad "rape jokes" and saying that it would be funny for a heckler to be raped right then and there. It really just should've ended with something along the lines of Tosh saying "Well, that's where you and I disagree." and moving on. Going out of his way to "attack" the woman was a dumb thing to do, and is completely indefensible.

Went to see Paul F. Tompkins in Philly last night, and while his set was as good as I expected, what I did not expect was the first person on stage to be John Hodgman. It was pretty strange to see him there in the first place, and it took me a second to figure out who he was since I hadn't seen a picture of him in awhile.

It was a great time, despite the theater being overwhelmingly hot.

I can understand maybe not wanting to listen to people like Eddie Murphy or George Carlin. Carlin kind of turned into a rambling, grumpy old man in the end, and that wasn't for everyone. Eddie Murphy is currently about as far away as anyone can be from classic Eddie Murphy. So I can get people not thinking their old stuff would be very good. While he's not it the same tier, I was the same with Bob Saget because I grew up watching Full House and AFV. But liking them after watching them baffles me completely.

I've tried to listen to him since, and I just can't do it. He has 3 jokes, and they are screaming, swearing, and screaming swears.

I mean, I get where you're coming from to a certain extent, but I sincerely doubt he got the video from Largo for free, and I doubt Tig has the resources to release it this way, and may never have intended to release it like this in the first place. And it's not like he's holding the thing hostage, he made a deal with Tig and these are the terms the agreed on. What is the problem?

Got mine for the Camden show, it was 45 for the next most expensive after the lawn tickets, plus some fees to bring it to around $60. Pretty excite for this. I've been to shows, but never to a festival.

I went to OddBall in Camden on Friday, and while I missed some people for various reasons, I had a really great time otherwise. My only real gripe was that Demitri Martin wasn't at that show, which kind of upset me, but it ends up I read his schedule wrong. FotC were great, Chappelle was exactly as Ror described above, and went over time since he was last, and Kristen Schaal was adorable through her entire set, and was probably the act I laughed hardest at.

Brody Stevens was alright, but most of the talent on the second stage was boring or forgettable so I wasn't really paying attention.

I missed Chris D'Elia, I think, and about 5 minutes of Kristen Schaal looking for a drunk friend who we had lost between the end of the second stage and the beginning of the main stage. I missed most of John Mulaney picking up VIP bands I had won at the Funny Or Die booth, and Jeff Ross missed the first song FotC played because that VIP room wasn't playing the show at all, and we were never alerted that the acts had started again. The night itself was kinda frustrating, but every act was great.

Ror posted:

(and the performers all seemed to indicate that it was one of the warmer crowds they'd had on the tour so far). I just don't think these comedy festivals are for me. Too much noise, too much loss of intimacy, and even though we had pretty good seats you're mostly watching a monitor to see the facial expressions.

Dave Chappelle called Camden the best crowd he'd had on the tour so far.:smug:

I definitely agree about the festival stuff, though. I had more fun seeing people at the tiny Helium in Philly, or seeing PFT at some small, non air-conditioned theater, than I did wandering the festival grounds and watching monitors. I did like, though, that FotC took a lady's sign that said "Lick My Battery" and displayed it on stage, and Dave Chappelle invited a woman on stage who asked for a hug. I feel like a smaller venue may not have generated those moments.
