I was at the taping for the Maron special back in April. Here's my dumb story.

My wife and I had tickets in the front of the balcony. A block of seats in the front row opened up way after the tickets went on general sale. Was surprised as hell that they were available and nabbed them quick. Got there in plenty of time and took our seats. Since they were filming, they made a point of telling you to use the bathroom if you had to and to make sure you had drinks if you wanted them. A woman came in with a drink and sat in the seat next to my wife. She talked to my wife for a bit - had driven up from outside of Chicago just for the show, mentioned a few other comedians she liked, general small talk. She had a whiskey of some sort with her and seemed a little buzzed but didn't seem noticeably drunk or anything. Stage guy came out, said they'd be starting soon and reiterated their stay in you seats please don't be a dumb poo poo request, please cheer a bunch when Marc comes out, etc.

The lights go down. And random girl apparently flips a switch and is now wasted. It's dark in the theater, fairly quiet, so the woman next to us starts doing bird calls. Not a loud sudden "WOOOO!" or a whistle. Bird noises. Huh.

Show starts, Marc comes out, people (including the stranger) cheers wildly and he starts in on his set. I'm guessing it was around the 10 minute mark that the woman next to us is completely passed out - leaning forward with her head in her arms on the balcony railing. Drove from Chicago, came to the show, and passed out within minutes. At various times during the set she would alternate between head down on the railing and pulling her knees up to her chest and being passed out in her chair. At one point, the remains of that last drink get spilled onto her purse on the floor.

Show goes on. Marc kills. As previously mentioned as a possibility - they was to re-shoot the intro. Stay in your seats please - pretend you're excited, etc. Lights go down, audience quiets down and it starts again. Only this time, the big round of applause as Marc comes out wakes our neighbor up. She looks around a bit confused, sees everyone clapping, Marc is coming on stage, and oh hey the show must be starting. She just starts clapping and woo!ing. For the reshoot, Marc came out, sat down and repeated the first few minutes of the set. Then he just stopped, that's a wrap, thanks for coming out, etc. People go nuts again, and I swear to poo poo the woman next to me looked so drat baffled.

Long story short, the person completely passed out next to us is why I'm guessing that we're not in any of the audience shots of the special. Guess I should check it out to verify.

Another story about being at tapings, but some friends and I got a woman kicked out of the club just prior to the filming of David Cross' "The Pride is Back" back in 1999. Pro tip : Don't announce your intention to make a spectacle of yourself in a lovely attempt to get on HBO while waiting outside in line with nerds that are actually into the act.

This is pretty cool.

Still haven't seen the final product myself, but like the idea. I just assumed I wasn't going to be in any shots since I was sitting next to a passed out person. If there's no shots to be in at all, all the better.

Side note - caught Maria Bamford last weekend. Pretty good, though a lot of the material was included in Old Baby. There's something about thinking about how much my parents would loving hate her act that makes it even funnier to me.

So David Cross just announced a new tour. Tickets on sale this Friday at 10:00 local time for all shows. A lot (all?) of them also showing a presale starting Wednesday but no mention of a code in the notification email.

Anyone able to track it down?

Saw Kreischer last night. Enjoyed it a lot. I assume a lot of people dislike how often he'll just start cracking himself up, but his silly rear end laugh is so infectious. And it makes my wife start giggling like a mad woman as well, which makes me start laughing.

I do feel slightly bad for him though. Due to THE BIT.

Poor guy. I had slight reservations about going to see him for fear of loads of people yelling out "The Machine!!!" all night. On cue - I heard it a few times in the first couple minutes of his set. He basically stopped and said "You know I'll tell it. Just stop. It's at the end." Thankfully this shut people up for the most part. Well, as quiet as a rather liquored up audience is gonna get.

So he closed with it. Been a while since I've bother watching footage of it, and to my mind he seemed to tell a rather abbreviated shorter version. I can't imagine for a second he enjoys telling that story any more. Surely it's made him a load of money, but Christ. He's gotta be sick of it.

Question. Any other comedians out there so enslaved by a single bit? Gaffigan pretty much has to tell some Hot Pockets joke(s) every set I would imagine, but he's got a lot to choose from there. I assume at the height of the Chappelle Show, any set he did was ruined by idiots yelling "I'm Rick James, Bitch!" or any other of a dozen catch phrases. But I can't think of any other comedian that's so connected to a single story.

Side topic - got tickets to see Stanhope here (Twin Cities) in May. Stoked. First night (tues) sold out nearly immediately. Second night (wed) was added and sold out immediately. Got an email saying that they were working on a 3rd night. Club in question is already booked (With the amazing Ali Siddiq) for 4 nights after that 2nd Stanhope night. Club he's performing at isn't even open on Mondays, but a couple days later - the email came. Monday night show added. Don't know if that's rare or not, but thumbs up to my favorite drunk.

Here's a potentially dumb question about something that was admittedly minor.

Went to a show Friday night at one of the local comedy clubs. Headliner and one of the openers had some CDs for sale after the show. At this venue they'll usually be set up where you'd go by their table on your way out. Basically, they're right there as you file out. Had a good time? - say hi, maybe (please) buy a CD as well.

So the headliner basically closed his set with (I'm paraphrasing ever so slightly, but this is pretty drat close.) "If you want to talk to me after the show, I'll be... (kinda pointing back towards the area where they'll be)... surprised." A small throwaway line at the end of the set, but really drat close to a Hedberg joke. So, how close to someone else's material does something have to be before it would be an issue among comedians?

I don't exactly expect Rogan to be heckling the guy over it, but I'm genuinely curious.

Tony Phillips
Feb 9, 2006
Like I said - pretty minor to begin with. Will admit my lack of knowing that it's a common throwaway line. I really only know of it since it's on one of Hedberg's albums.

Five part podcast about David Cross if anyone's interested:
https://www.theassemblypodcast.com/season2

Dumb rear end story vaguely about David Cross if anyone's interested:
A friend got me into Mr. Show in 1998 right before the final season aired. I was instantly hooked and an annoying amount of Mr. Show references have littered our conversations ever since.

The following Summer Cross was coming to Seattle to do two nights at the Showbox, and it was being filmed for what ended up as "The Pride is Back" on HBO. We bought tickets for both nights despite knowing it would be the same set.

We went downtown a few hours before show time, had a few drinks and ended up in line 30 or so minutes before doors opened. Surprised at how few people there were, it turned out he wasn't nearly as popular as we had thought/hoped. Talking to some other people in line, we heard that HBO or whoever was in charge of such things had been around the neighborhood earlier just giving tickets to people in hopes of getting them to come. "He's really funny! He's on HBO! This will be on HBO!" We overheard other people in line mentioning that they had never heard of him before.

Doors open, we get seated near the front, and the show starts. Great set. Loved it. Have heard the material countless times since then. But the night itself? It's a mess. Font and center table directly infront of the mic stand? A table of three people that clearly don't know who he is and as it turns out - HATE his material. Leaning back in their seats, arms folderd, death stares most of the time. Tried to heckle at least once (Over a joke about Meg Ryan of all things) but gets called an idiot and laughed at by most of the audience. Later in the set, against the producers requesting people get their drinks ahead of time and stay at their table, one of them makes a show of getting up to go the bathroom. The Showbox is more of a music venue and the bathroom entrances are basically 10 feet from the stage so Cross followed them in mic in hand and poo poo talked them for it. All of this is at least amusing if annoying to a fan, but it's rendering the night basically unusable for recording a special.

Night two. We headed down early again and are first in line. We want to be first in line due to knowing the start of the show. We bullshit for a bit with other people in line. Some had been there the night before, others not. But we heard some of the same things again. "They're just giving tickets away, etc..." A woman down line is clearly already drunk and we can hear her loudly stating poo poo like "IMMA BE ON HBO!!!" Bad omen.

Doors open, we get in and bee line it straight to a particular table in the front. A few minutes later a producer for the show comes up and asks if we'd mind changing tables.
"No no no. We were here last night. We know what table this is. We know last night kinda sucked, but we'll be cool. Promise." That was good enough for him.
He turns to leave. I have no memory of who thought to rat the woman out, but someone catches his attention and tells him "Hey - you see that lady over there? Already drunk and being kinda loud? Well she was outside bragging about how she's going to act like a jackass so she can be on HBO."
"Oh yeah? Her? Thanks..."
A minute later he's at her table with security and she's getting escorted out as a couple dozen Mr. Show nerds are laughing at her. All I recall is that she was annoyed and called us all losers, L on the forehead gesture and all.
And that's how me and my narc friends got someone kicked out of a comedy show before it even started.

The table we were at is basically featured at the start of the show:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2OQXQYQaZ8

And that's how my dumb rear end friend and I ended up on screen in a 1999 David Cross special.

I guess because he comes off like he doesn't loving give a poo poo either way or maybe because he's not mainstream or widely known enough to generate outrage and the people who go to see him know what they're in for anyway.

But that bit he did about the troops where he suckered the audience is something I could see the FOX News crowd getting their nuts in a twist about.

Absolutely butchering his take on it, but from memory of past podcasts he more or less laughs at the idea of being cancelled. A mixture of "I'd take the exposure" and the fact that he kinda can't really be cancelled. He's essentially got enough of a following to be able to do his thing at his level of club for as long as he wants. It's not like he's going to get some Netflix series that they could subsequently take away from him.

FOX attempting to make a deal of a bit from 20 years ago would be loving hilarious if only for seeing a newscaster explain that Doug joked that the organization was called "Pigs in Blankets."

My wife and I have liked Ali Siddiq for a few years now since seeing his appearances on "This is Not Happening."

The first time we saw him was at a Rick Bronson's - a chain comedy club in the top floor of the Mall of America. There were 23 people there. I know that cause when he came out he counted us and laughed at how much him mom would have loved seeing this cause it's the kind of thing that keeps you humble. We saw him there again a year or so later and while the crowd was bigger it was still probably only 150 people or so.

The tickets I just bought are for an upcoming theater tour - his first. Here in MN he's playing a theater with just over 1000 seats.

I like comedy a fair amount - certainly more than the average person. At the same time, I'm not that on top of things to know who's drawing what crowd wise, etc. Has Ali Siddiq gotten that popular? I know he placed 2nd on some comedy showcase TV show a few years back (Had to cancel a 3rd visit to Rick Bronson's due to it in fact) and I assume he got some decent exposure from that. But despite how much *I* like him - I feel a little surprised that he's at this level now.

Looks like Ali is still going club heavy until the end of the year and the theatre dates are picking up after that, likely coinciding with the special he's taping in a couple weeks. At some point (and I'm long past my days of any behind the scenes insight in to the economics of venue booking), a barely sold theatre still makes more sense than a packed Bronson's or ACME.

Worth noting that Pantages is part of Hennepin Theatre Trust, just as a lot of venues are wrapped up in larger group. If sales drastically underwhelm, they can always shuffle him off to whatever they're calling the downtown Brave New Workshop now.

Good point on theater vs. Bronson's/Acme. (Though I'll take a show at the Acme every drat time.)

Also, a little side LOL as I know I've been to the Pantages, State and Orpheum theaters and in my head they're all pretty interchangeable. Hell - I don't think I could accurately point to which is which on a map without seeing the marque. But looking at their seating capacities and they're absolutely not the same with The Pantages being half the capacity roughly.

At the end of the day - the moral of my posts is that Ali Siddiq is great and you should see him if you can.

Also - after seeing him the first time, he was happily chatting with the people that had come. Spent a minute chatting and somehow having previously seen Joey Diaz at Rick Bronson's had come up. From the no loving poo poo obvious files - my wife and I were informed that should Joey Diaz ever offer you weed, run the Hell away. The bit in Segura's new special had us laughing our asses off remembering that advice.
