Is there really any more Dating Sims that Arino can do? They seem really hard to fit in the format the show is using, along with RPGs. I'm honestly surprised they haven't done Dragon Quest 1, considering the visual themes the intermissions use. The next best thing for me is Adventure games. I loved the Clock Tower and Out of This World episode. How many of those does Arino do?

People seem to have the impression that those are sold out in the open next to the average Studio Ghibli or Dragon Quest game or whatever in megastores, but they're generally just about as obscure and niche as porn in every other country. In the grand scheme of things I don't think Japanese politicians care about those, they're aiming for much more "mainstream" targets.

Haven't never played the original MM1 and only the PSP remake, what the heck did half of the pick-ups actually do? At first I thought they were points but the points didn't actually increase and I don't see MM's health increasing or anything. The game actually looks kind of beta-ish, in a way.

The only bug I remember in Megaman 3 is Top Spin draining energy rapidly sometimes, I can't remember the exact details, I believe it's if you try to use it while you're under invincibility frames or something. But who uses Top Spin anyway right? (It's kind of an underrated weapon. I mean, I find more use for Top Spin than Search Snake)

Kerfuffle posted:Also dating sims, those episodes probably made me laugh the hardest. Sadly, I don't think they did any more after Tokimeki. Speaking of that, I find the more interesting episodes to be the ones where Arino uses his brain rather than his reflexes (Mega man sort of counts because using weapons optimally is a good part of the game). It's just more interesting to see him go "I got a plan" and execute it rather than "After 30 tries I finally got the muscle memory to beat the boss's pattern" The second kind that I like is those that sort of allow him to interact with the game simulation wise despite the fact that technically they are just pre-written bits of code and graphics. Something like Actraiser's village raising part or Tokimeki Memorial. I thought a train simulator would be boring to watch but the way Arino interacts with the game just cracks me up.

Night of the Sickle Weasals has turned out to be one of my favourite episodes in a while and I think it really reinforces my feelings that Arino works best with narrative-focused games (Tokimemo, Clock Tower, etc...). After you remove the nostalgia of dying a billion times in Ninja Gaiden or something, I don't really find those episodes very interesting outside of Arino delivering some funny lines once in a while. It was an interesting way to experience a game that I don't think has been fan translated so far. The narrative was a lot more solid that Hokkaido Serial Murders as well. The funny thing is, I couldn't get the mystery right because I was coming up with overly meta explanations involving multiple timelines. I probably shouldn't have been so paranoia about a game from 1994. Got a question on the ending though (for those who have played it) What's up with the statement where Mari (I think) was confused that Toshio killed himself when the gun was right there with them? Was this supposed to signify something, or did he own a second gun and was an undercover cop or something?

I was under the impression that you were meant to use power-leveling and "read an FAQ" tricks to severely cut down the Guardia Quest playtime. I mean, that's one of the "meta" concepts of the game.

I'm slow so I just watched the Doki Doki Panic episode. So I vaguely know that DDP was the original Japanese version of Mario 2 and the characters were reskinned into Mario series one, but I'm surprised to see that Shyguys and Birdo were in the original game. Did they just enter the official Mario canon out of the laziness of not changing the enemies? Normally when this sort of reskins happen it's usually set in some kind of non-continuity. Feels kind of odd considering how associated the Shyguys are with Mario now.

Corridor posted:Anyway, another question... I'm rewatching the earlier episodes (Sasano ) and I was wondering why they pronounce dragon the English way - 'duragon'. It's not like they don't have plenty of dragons in their own culture. Plus the one they were referring to in this instance (Ghosts N Goblins) was an Eastern dragon in any case. I get why they say various game terms like 'gamey obera' and 'continue' and stuff the English way, but 'duragon'? There's no real set rules in fiction for this sort of thing. It's probably written that way in the manual or something. Sometimes they just want to be exotic. edit: quote:e2: I just noticed that during the interview with Kojima (who seems totally awesome), the clip they play of MGS is in English, with David Hayter's voice. Don't tell me the original MGS is voiced that way... I don't think it is, but Kojima prefers dubbed MGS to the original VA.

I always thought the "tension" thing in DQ8/9 was like a narrative thing in e.g Anime. It makes no logical sense that you pull out your most powerful, straining moves when you're beaten half to death, but they do it when the situation is "tense", so to speak.

Reminds me of the terrible Super Robot Wars 4 fan-translation. The grunt soldiers go "SWEET!" when they attack because the translator didn't know that and the tone is all wrong as a result. They also go "UWA!" when they are hit so I guess they're being piloted by clone Arinos.

A lot of the design decisions in Comix Zone that most people dislike like "lose HP when you attack something" and "enemies block a lot"... well, personally speaking, I believe it's because the game isn't really a beat-em-up and shouldn't be played like one. No, really, it's actually a "puzzle" game at heart. In most panels, there's usually an item or an environmental object (like say, rotating fan blades or pitfalls) that you can use to easily one-shot most enemies. For those panels where there's no option but to fight I noticed the enemies block a lot less. Once you have that mind set that you should be looking around to see if there's anything interesting in the background the game becomes MUCH easier.

So I'm kind of behind the times again but I just finished watching the Chelnov episode. I vaguely recall playing the game as a kid but it wasn't a game that particularly stuck out in my mind. It was kind of interesting revisiting it as an adult and actually understanding the cultural images used in the game though, like the Dogu statue boss (as a kid I just thought it was a weird looking boss design) Weird how Wikipedia apparently seems to believe that the game is a parody... I just thought they used those cultural images because they looked cool and provided the game with a unique visual style, a parody would be Cho Aniki. Also what is up with the game's ending? "Oh no, you didn't find your sister, sequel hook?" "No wait, nevermind, she's here all along, yay!"

I like the episodes where Arino... well, sort of "interacts" with the game as if it were real and injects his own narrative rather than dying to a super tough boss over and over constantly. With that as a criteria, here's some of the episodes which I thought were the best. Tokimeki Memorial Clock Tower Night of Sickle Weasel CR Quiz Go By Train.

A lot of people tend to confuse the media's focus on Japan's "nerd" culture and apply it to the entire nation, but stuff like panties obsession is actually rather isolated to specific groups that usually heavily consume anime/videogames. Your average 30-40 year old Japanese salaryman probably wouldn't give a crap about that. It would sort of like be getting your mental image of Americans from Star Trek Convention goers.

I personally think that all the Operation Rainfall games were already in the cards to be released and the petition itself did jack squat in convincing the companies to release it (it might have convinced more people to pick it up once it was released, but not the actual business decision to release the game in the US), so that's probably not a good example to use.

My favourites are the games where Arino interacts with the game's narrative and talking to the characters as if they were real people. I put down Tokimeki Memorial, Clock Tower and S.O.S for favourites My least favourite are "super tough action games" where he just fails constantly over and over. I don't find that interesting to watch at all, especially when the gameplay stays the same. Battletoads is an exception because... well, the gameplay always changes. Mega Man 4 was one of my 3 least favourite choices because it felt like he was just phoning it in, dealing with every situation just by standing still and hoping to kill the enemies before he dies himself instead of actually playing the game. I can't remember any other specific "I don't like this challenges though" because I tend not to remember them specifically if they fall under said category.
