Korean TV does lots of text on screen as well. And it's frankly more of a US aversion to reading, IMO. Don't know of another group of people that hate reading as much as the average American.

Yeah, it's a bit douchey, but I'm loving tired of it. So yeah, it might be a stupid generalization, but I don't care.

The Megaupload takedown and multiupload disappearing broke pretty much all the download links in the OP. The last few pages have links to torrents for many episodes in addition to one or two full season torrents. The team is working on making the other episodes available, and will get around to updating the OP when they get around to it.

Unfortunately, it does require a bit of hunting in the thread, but I assure you their work, and the show, is worth it. If you really want to watch a particular episode that hasn't been torrented yet, I'm sure someone can knock one up for you if you ask nicely. Most of us have giant folders stuffed with everything that's come out so far. (and some of us have decent upstream pipes as well...)

I've been watching a lot of this show recently (thanks SAGCCX team!), but I don't actually know all that much about Japan, so I have a few general questions.

First, they make a bit of a deal about Arino's transition from junior manager or whatever all the way up to Kachau, and then they have an episode where he is demoted two ranks for having lost four challenges in a row, only to be re-promoted at the end of the episode when he successfully completes the challenge (I think it was the quiz game episode). Obviously, the demotion thing was a bit of a gimmick, but are the rest of Arino's changing titles actually something of value in Japan, or is it sort of a joke itself, because his responsibilities never change (at least the ones we see)?

Second, to American eyes, Arino's mint green suit is hideous, but he walks around town in it. Would people think this fashion is normal, or would seeing someone out and about like that be more like spotting the question mark guy?

Third, is Arino a bona fide celebrity (even a B-list celebrity) in Japan that would be recognized by a non-trivial portion of the population?

1: It's a complete joke. The ranks are corporate ranks; obviously, Arino is not actually an office worker.

2: Arino wears an engineer's jumpsuit. It's a bit odd, but nothing unusual. Think doctor or nurse going out for lunch in scrubs.

3: He is a real celebrity. Maybe not the hottest comedian in Japan, but he is a legitimate celebrity.

EDIT: Excuse me, he wears an engineer's coverall, not a jumpsuit. I believe that's the proper term since he wears a shirt and tie underneath.

Yup, you see it quite a bit in Korea as well. Both nations have office cultures where, if you have a desk, you're expected to come into work in a suit regardless of whether you're gonna go out into the field that day or do office work. So you see those a lot in the lower end of management. Do some office work in the morning, don your coverall and inspect the lines or bash out a prototype in the afternoon, that type of thing.

I completely randomly stumbled onto zari-gani's blog, because it was linked to in another thread for completely different reasons. I didn't even make the connection until this live ep. Still, dunno what zari-gani wants, so I'm gonna sit mum for now.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention that most people never use sigs outside of the scary crap subforums like FYAD, so beware with sigs in general.

I can't imagine they don't know, but I doubt they will ever mention it even off the record, as it's too risky from a legal standpoint. As I'm sure you're aware, but some goons may not, copyright is very clear in that you have to actively protect your copyright or run the risk of losing the right to prosecute to protect it. So it's safer for everyone involved to simply act like they have no idea what's going on.

Yeah, you're right. But I still stand by my statement that they'll ignore the heck out of the fansubs till the cows come home.

EDIT: Wait, no, I take that back after reading my initial post: I'm right. You guys misinterpreted my statement as saying they'll lose copyright if they don't defend. That's not what I was referring to, I was referring to laches. Essentially, if you know infringement was going down, but you did nothing to stop it, your recovery in a court of law is limited to only after the point in which you gave notice to the infringer. In this situation, if the production company (or whoever holds the copyright) acknowledges the fansubs in any official capacity, and then someone comes along and makes money off of GCCX, they are barred from recovering any damages that occur because of the second infringer before they give notice to the second infringer. Granted, the caselaw is a bit murky in the sense that I'm not sure there is precedent for applying laches in a situation where the initial infringer is not the infringer you are suing, but in any case, their potential recovery from infringers that monetize their infringement will most likely be limited. If they never acknowledge, and therefore make it nigh impossible to prove, that they knew of infringement occurring beforehand and did nothing, any potential claims in the future will not be limited by laches so long as they act quickly when they find out someone is infringing and making money off of it.
tl;dr: look up laches; it applies to copyright as well. They do not lose the copyright, like in trademarks, but can lose money.

Nothing wrong with feeling awful about that aspect of the show. Just because it's a cultural thing doesn't mean you should just accept it blindly. Yes, it's a cheap joke, and I would like to assume that Arino isn't going to make cheap fat jokes at someone's expense in his private life, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't feel bad when it happens on the show.

I mean, it's bad enough that we're essentially powerless to do anything about it.

Not that much of a conflict. SAGCCX has always removed links/not translated the Kotaku episodes, regardlessof how bad they were. The DVDs are the Kotaku episodes redone, I believe. And as far as I know, their license only goes that far.

If the DVDs sell well enough for then to go and license more episodes, then I imagine SAGCCX would remove any conflicts. Until then, or in any case, it would be a troublesome conflict of interest if zari-gani was doing this for Fuji-TV.

I love the followup to that segment as well.

Just in case you haven't gotten to that particular episode yet: the staff were especially annoyed because, after filming wrapped, Arino went back to the casino to play with his own money and found great success.

Yeah, the releases have been slower lately, but as per Random Stranger's post, zari-gani has been busy with official translation work. I know we have some other translators, but zari-gani has been the ace in terms of ripping them out. So I figure we'll have much slower releases until zari-gani finishes the dvd episodes. I don't mind; I mean, the whole point of fansubs are to promote a work so it gets an official venue, no?

Heh, I'm Korean too. There are lots of Japanese loanwords in Korean that aren't obvious, mainly because they were used during the occupation, and while people use them all the time, they aren't too keen on making note of the fact that it's a Japanese loanword. You know, because both nations pretty much hate/dislike each other. (Except for cultural products, especially anime from Japan and kpop from Korea. Both sides love that poo poo.)

As a Korean-American, I find it hilarious since we're all 'slanty-eyes' to the rest of the world. I mean, sins of the father and all that; the occupation, while painful, was in the past y'all...

It seems like TVN had someone who understands Japanese well translate with the philosophy of, "lol, gently caress it". Kotaku sounds like they had someone who barely knew Japanese translate with the philosophy of, "lol, gently caress it". And zari-gani seems to understand Japanese well and, at the same time, actually care about making the translation understandable and natural.

In short, you're the best, zari-gani. Can't wait for the DVDs and more SAGCCX eps.

I agree; this is exactly why I vastly prefer zari-gani's subs over TV-Nihon's 'OMG, I KNOWZ JAPANESE, LOL' stuff. The point of localization is not to provide literal translations, it's to make it intelligible and familiar to those who have zero knowledge of the original's language. That's what professional subtitles do; they sacrifice accuracy for the sake of being easily understandable to the target audience. Literal translation subtitles are only useful if you're trying to learn the language; since the point of watching GCCX is not to learn Japanese, but to enjoy it for entertainment's sake, I don't want some stupid 'translator's notes' and an infantile insistence on the 'original' name when there's a perfectly suitable English name that people who have played the game in Western countries would know.
