In the spirit of spreading awareness for this project across the Internet, and to counteract those brief periods where non-members can't view the thread, I've created a Steam group that will regularly pester you about games while you're playing games (ie. Announcements will happen when the SA Team release a new episode, or something else notable appears in the thread).

The release of the DS game special is pretty good timing in my case; I'm nearing the end of the Story Mode, so hopefully they'll feature some useful secrets during the episode!

For the attention of anybody with a 3DS:

Earlier today, Nintendo sent out special Swapnote messages to advertise various things, such as Iwata and Reggie (for Japan and America respectively) mentioning a new Nintendo Direct video, and Zelda series lead director Aonuma thanking fans for their support during the Zelda 25th Anniversary. All these messages came with unique 'stationery', which can be used in your own swapnotes as soon as you receive a message containing them. (You do have to unlock the Stationery function first, which is done by creating a few swapnotes of your own. You don't have to send them to anybody, just save 'em.)

One of the promotional swapnotes released today is very relevant to our interests.

Couldn't find any images or articles about this elsewhere, so I settled on taking a crap photo. The King's speech bubble says "メンセージ", or "Message". The background is animated, with stars constantly flying towards the screen like that old Windows screensaver.

To claim this for yourself, you either need an Internet-connected Japanese 3DS, or must have it sent to you by a friend. My 3DS code is 0946-2283-6120; PM me or leave a comment here with your own friend code, and you'll receive the stationery eventually.

Several VC game updates (plus the Ambassador Certificate for some reason) and a near-empty battery later, 90% of the codes posted so far have met with a fortunate fate.

Swapnote marks people you've already sent a message to, so I'll keep periodically checking for the new and slower few people to pop online. Give it a week or so, and the gentle plague of spacey note backgrounds will have spread to most people on that GoonFriend site as well.

Make sure you've actually unlocked the Stationery function first (by creating and saving 5 notes), otherwise it won't work.

I just want to avoid spoiling the Xmas miracle for mysel!

You may as well watch the episode, since the 'full' live Quest Of Kai challenge is notoriously long and boring. The only translation it ever received (and may ever receive) was SAGCCX's recent April Fool's gag; a parody mistranslation of the first hour, created by "the Sugoi Squad".

Pitch me an episode that the SA Team has worked on that a new viewer should watch.

#64 - Sonic the Hedgehog. Right off the bat you get Arino pranking the audience and staff to set the mood, there's a clear progression in his skill from beginning to end, it goes down-to-the-wire (of course), and there's a feature on the 'GCCX Museum' from early 2008, putting the spotlight on notable staff members, the first DS game, and mementos of past challenges. Also, there's a great bumper for the Cannes (France) episode at the end.

Also also, let's not forget The Curious Introduction Of Mr Nakayama (ft. "Ponkoron"). This alone would be worth the recommendation.

A few decades back, Toonami was an action oriented block of programming on Cartoon Network produced by Williams Street, the company that produces Adult Swim. It was largely comprised of anime but the non-anime shows were very few in number. The block was hosted by a robot named TOM on a starship. I don't know why that decided on a framing device for a few hours of programming but they often had special story events involving the robot and other characters that would play out over a week.

It ended up getting cancelled but was brought back as a April Fools Day on Adult Swim but it proved to be popular enough that they brought it back in full for Saturday nights.

Toonami UK was similar; exact same framing device (TOM, his AI companion, the starship Absolution being used to "broadcast the channel"), same 'plot' events that N.A. got, same focus on anime shows. The big differences were in the structure (airing in a small block every weeknight, and larger late-evening blocks every day, on the main Cartoon Network channel) and promotion (lots of localised adverts, bumpers and intros).

Around the early 2000's, it span off into a separate channel called CNX, ditching TOM and the rest of the plot but retaining all the shows, adding in some of CN's more mature shows of the time (Samurai Jack) as well some live-action in the form of special interest programmes (eg. extreme sports) and 'World Cinema' movies. It's my opinion that CNX would have been the perfect channel for airing legal, subtitled episodes of Game Center CX... if CNX was still around.

For whatever reason, after a couple of years as CNX, the channel was rebranded to Toonami again. TOM and all those other elements didn't return. This time, only the biggest ratings juggernauts (ie. Dragonball) survived the transition, and the holes were patched with new anime (Rave Master), 'franime' (Code Lyoko) and random live-action 80's shows. Even this would have been an okay environment for GCCX, but the damage had been done; almost none of the new shows were good, and all the best old shows aired after midnight. The channel collapsed.

Last I checked (5 years ago), Toonami UK had gone back to its roots and survived as a late-night anime block on the main CN channel, even bringing back the TOM theme (in a barebones sort of way). That's pretty much the whole story; it's probably gone forever now. RIP Toonami UK.

I can't figure out what they mean by "For out the difficult challenge." I'm an English major! I should be able to translate bad grammar, but this! This is two prepositions right next to each other! That's just grammatical madness!

Since the show likes to shoehorn 'completing challenges' into the Pixel King segments as a plot point, as if their completion somehow has a positive effect on events in that world ("We can probably reverse the spell... if Arino completes enough games!"), it stands to reason that the King and his family are the ones creating challenges for Arino in the first place.

Thus, the poster is probably meant to say "FOR (SETTING) OUT THE DIFFICULT CHALLENGE(S)", which could become "FOR CREATING RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT CHALLENGES" if you re-wrote it.

Has anybody else noticed, going by the OP's episode list, how close we are to having all of the first eight seasons translated (skipping [CX])? Of the 69 episodes, there's only three left to be released in some form:

 ● #35 - Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom
  ● As far as we know, still being used as a class translation project somewhere. Has repeatedly been described as boring and low-priority.

 ● #52 - Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
  ● Clover recently released #34 (Ghouls 'n' Ghosts for MD/Genesis), so it'll probably be okay if we don't see paper-thin armour for a while.

 ● #63 - Mendel Palace
  ● This one sounds interesting; it's the first ever Game Freak/Satoshi Tajiri game, and it's apparently squishy-pig-balls-to-the-wall hard.

This observation shouldn't change SAGCCX's priorities; if they feel that there's more interesting episodes they should release first, then it's a safe bet we'll appreciate them working on those instead. As always, big thanks to everyone involved in these releases, and may your momentum someday carry you all the way to the Good Ending known as "fully translated".

Ditto on this. Other welcome possibilities, in order of most-to-least welcome, would be:

● Getting the show licensed for international television (something like the UK's "Challenge TV" channel would be ideal).
● The existing DVD set licensed for distribution outside North America.
● More official translated episodes, (initially) streamed in the style of the Kotaak deal.
● Nintendo eShop games, in the style of Guild01 (ie. "Retro Game Challenge"-style creations, either standalone or available grouped).
● RS's book being sneakily 'recognised' by the show.
● Someone buying the rights to the show's format, adapting it for another country.

Earlier in the thread, one of my posts briefly mentioned this KS book project when it was just starting, and the author's intention to get an interview with Arino as part of the book's content. Now it's worth bringing up again, because the book just met its funding goal, and both Arino's agent and GCCX's producer have provisionally approved the interview!

The digital version of the book (with interview) will turn up sometime early next year, but for some daft reason the digital version is exclusive to the KS backers. That option's open for a few more days, and the printed edition (minus some fancy cover art) will drop around the same time. Some kind of accompanying "trip footage" DVD is planned, but there's no indication whether or not that would include filming the Arino interview, so assume that it's going to be text-only for now.

I just got the soundtrack and, put simply, I'm actually in love with how it just feels randomly thrown together, it kind of fits that GCCX spirit somehow. The fact that I thought Arino himself said not to buy it was icing on the cake for me, but I don't remember where he said that

You might be confusing it with the recent J Legend Retsuden interview, where he derails the topic and advises children not to play retro games unless they want a hardcore history lesson.

The new website may just be the best 'advertising' tool the show will ever have in the West; big thanks to those involved in its creation! With that solid foundation in place, now we just need to make sure it organises and covers as much translated content as possible, including:

~ Non-Challenge Segments for the DVD episodes
~ The DS games (including the second one's in-progress translation)
~ Other minor stuff "related" to the show (Arino interviews, advertising spots, the April Fools releases, art and resources like this, etc.)

As long as there's a piece of GCCX left untranslated, there'll always be anticipation from the fanbase to see it tackled. Projects like this give lots of momentum to that goal by bringing in new people to the fanbase. Hopefully the site will be as long-lived as the fanbase itself!

It's been my most-wanted challenge since they played the original. You just know an AD will take control of Tails partway through, and Arino will proceed to abuse them for the remainder of the episode(s). Another likelihood is not mentioning the special stages or chaos emeralds until after Arino gets the bad ending (like last time, even though that was Nakayama's fault), unless they decide he'll need Super Sonic to clear the later stages.
