Talk about coincidences... I was thinking the other day, 'hey, I should probably register to these forums to give something back for all the great fun I've had watching Game Center CX.' And then they make it so you have to register to view this topic! So thank you all for providing, I've enjoyed the episodes a lot. Discovered the whole thing a few months back and already seen all the episodes that are subbed. Incidentally, I've never seen the Kotaku episodes, so when the DVD's make their way to here in Finland, I'll be in for a treat. Oh, and thanks for the avatar, it really suits me.

I finally got my DVD's delivered here too and immediately started with Ninja Gaiden (haven't seen any Kotaku episodes previously). And man, can it get any better than this? It's such a great episode filled with excitement and disappointment from a game that's really merciless with its difficulty. The disbelief when Arino beats a final boss only to realize it's not the last one (twice, for that matter) is always so funny to watch. And you just gotta love the teamwork of the guys here. About the DVD quality: I was missing the segments, but other than that I have nothing to complain about. Hopefully people will pick the DVD up so that we might have more releases in the future.

Watching some of the older episodes again and I totally forgot how socially inept guys like Inoko MAX and Nakayama were on their first appearance. Although in my mind one of the greatest moments of the show is when Inoue manages to clear the super hard seahorse level in Umihara Kawase (#31) and his reaction that follows.

I dunno how common practice it is among GCCX fans, but lately I've been trying to acquire myself some of the games featured in the show just to see how I'd fare against Arino, like The legend of mystical ninja which I didn't own yet. I even contemplated on getting myself a Famicom just to be able to get my hands on Bio miracle or Quest of Ki.

I buy mainly games I've actually played as a kid or games I want to play now, not just for the sake of collecting. And I'd really want Little Samson and Mr.Gimmick, but at least the latter is probably out of my reach pricing several hundred euros. One could get Little Samson for about ~100 € but that's still very steep IMO. Other than those two nothing I still want to buy isn't too expensive for NES or SNES. Well, maybe Mega Man 6.

Thanks for the translation! That must've been a lot of work. But man, this episode was funny as hell. I love how Arino doesn't want his daughter to be a geek (or rather, to wear glasses) but still aces all the geeky questions. His reactions in the boyfriend events were also hilarious.

There's one thing that keeps bothering me. Who's the guy in the staff that keeps laughing at most of Arino's jokes? He's always goin' "WAHAHA" with a really audible laugh in the background.

Wahaha! Sorry for being lazy. I was just watching the Bio Miracle episode and he's all over the place. Back a bit there was discussion about those episodes where Arino scolds the characters and I've always liked this one where he goes "Watch out, kid!" It's also a game with a great BGM. Would've been a great addition in that GCCX piano medley.

I tried to tweet Arino to thank him for the Parappa episode but I think I ended up calling him a rock. It was funny how in the Dig Dug episode he kept on insisting to finish the game the "fun" way instead of the boring way by just pumping up the enemies. I loved his half-assed victory celebration while he was doing that. "Boring!" And by the way, why didn't that Simpsons arcade game never get a home system port? Along with the X-Men arcade game I really wanted to see those on a SNES or even Megadrive. They did such an awesome job with Turtles in Time, after all. But I guess the other two were too big and complicated to be squeezed into a 16-bit cartridge? TeaJay fucked around with this message at 18:21 on Dec 9, 2012 |

Oh, I don't have any of these modern consoles. I've occasionally thought about getting a 3DS, but if Scribblenauts Unlimited is on Wii U, could get that one and try those new Mega Man games as well.

He responded like so: "Yes!アイムROCK!Wii U!" It's funny as hell no matter what he is going for here. A couple of other people tweeted to me as well afterwards but they were all in japanese so I have no idea what they were trying to say.

My personal waitlist is pretty much 1) Mega Man 4 and 2) Mr. Gimmick at this point. Those two games are personal favourites of mine and I can't wait to see how Arino will fare with them. (it's a huge dream of mine to eventually get a copy of Mr. Gimmick, maybe when I put up 300 € or so...)

I was watching the Doreamon episode where Arino and Toujima struggle with the western game descriptions and it made me think how bad Arino (and Toujima) is with english. For some reason I've had this idea that the japanese are at least somewhat familiar with english, as it's used so much in games and media, but if Arino is any guide, it probably applies to younger people or the people who are interested in western games and media in general. I'm guessing the english alphabet is what makes it so hard for Arino, although he might know some phrases phonetically?

This is a very interesting discussion. I thought about comparing my studies in german and french, but I thought that while the languages are very different (Finnish myself) they still use the western alphabet and many of the words and sentence structures are similar to english. By watching japanese TV shows and listening to music in addition to teaching myself some basics I've mostly learned some vocabulary and common phrases, but like you guys said earlier, the sentence phrasing is totally different from what I'm used to so it's hard to follow, even with translations. Maybe learning japanese by watching GCCX isn't the best way, but drat it, I sure know how to say "it's dangerous/easy/hard"!

Panties from a prize game made me double take. What? Even if it's Japan, that caught me by surprise. About Nakayama: What is with Nakayama and these female announcers? First the retro read-aloud announcer treats him so badly it makes me feel bad (not even looking at him and speaking like he's not even there) and now Takeda even gets scolded by Arino to be nicer to him. (although they did compliment him for making a good argument for Yie ar Kung-Fu). TeaJay fucked around with this message at 12:41 on Dec 31, 2012 |

Regarding scripted or not, I suppose if Arino plays well there's no need for AD's to step in. But are they making a plan on when to step in on the fly as they go along, since they can't be sure what is causing Arino trouble during his gameplay? Or do they have everything planned out with every possible solution ready with information should Arino need it?

I have to echo you guys in that I really like James Rolfe, but less so the AVGN. James always gives the best insight when he's not fully in character (and has admitted lately that constantly swearing gets really old) and I really love his retro gaming device reviews. Plus episodes like Plumbers don't wear ties are just hilarious.

Aku posted:Arino does surprisingly decent for a guy playing Super Metroid for the first time. He beats the game at around 5 game hours. Even though he couldn't clear the "3 hours" goal it's still a heck of a lot better than I managed my first time. I have only watched the RAW of the episode, would love to see it translated since Super Metroid is one of my all-time favourites. But I have to admit I never would have thought he'd do so well. I remember I was completely lost when I played it the first time and found only a fraction of the missiles and bonuses. Also, as long as there's discussion about Arino and lyrics about sex, I have to say that my favourite GCCX translation ever is how "ero-otoko" becomes "lady-killer" in Tokimeki memorial.

I can't help but feel jealousy over the fact that they have awesome little cafés like that one in Japan. Watching the show and seeing all these various quaint shops and arcades has given me a huge urge to go apply for a starter fund for new business owners from the government and start my own café with pinball machines, arcade games and retro consoles people can play if they want to! Kan isn't really a person who'd laugh out loud like that. I remember in the Korean trip episode he gave Arino such a cold stare when he just stopped for a moment to do some window shopping...

Thanks for the two-part Yoshi's Island! The evening went nicely with the episodes waiting for the Super bowl. It's amazing to think how fast you guys worked to translate the most recent episodes. The Barcode battle is a fun little sequence. I vaguely remember those devices being sold here as well in the 90's and kids going around shops scanning various products to fight each other.

I don't doubt at all that the times he spends on those games are legit. Dying over and over is one thing, but then you gotta make progress back to that spot you're dying over and over in too. Sometimes I gotta wonder at his tenacity - after all, we're getting the abridged version where they can just say "20 minutes later..." but he has to actually get there (albeit sometimes with the help of AD's, of course). For me, when I play a hard NES or SNES game, I feel like throwing the controller to the wall after a few deaths at a tough spot.

I mean, I'm the sort of crazyass mofo who just downloads the .VGM soundtrack of (arcade) Turtles in Time and listens to it on infinite loop while at work at my desk. I listen to the Super Metroid soundtrack when it's a dark and a rainy day. And yeah, that arcade owner was way better than some of the guys we've seen. He obviously cared a lot about the games. It always bugs me out to go to an arcade and see half the machines with the "BROKEN" sign on them.

I would go to an establishment like that. Pay 10 € at the door and play as long as you like, all the machines are free. Arcades as a whole have all but died here in Finland anyway. You find an odd pinball machine or an arcade cabinet in gas stations and such, but in major cities, there are no arcades. There are casinos, though. I'm not sure what killed the arcades, is it the fact that handheld consoles made their breakthrough or that cellphones and tablets are nowadays "busy" gamers choices for a quick fix? To me, going to a local arcade was always an exciting feeling, like going to the movies. It's just not the same at home, no matter what kind of rigs you have.
