DmC is... not bad. It's quite colorful without being garish but I'm not really impressed with either the characters or the monsters. And some of the effects are really weird, like the skybox going nuts and flipping out when the world starts to transform (at least I hope that wasn't a graphics glitch.)

If you're getting the skybox stuff or texture errors that's Unreal Engine 3 showing its underbelly. UE3 has these sort of issues.

Your first attempt shows off a move I don't think I've seen it do before - the puke-spikes coming up from the ground.

It's pretty bad that they're breaking up the combat with those loving cutscenes though - you were only a few hits away from a SSS, and the game goes "NOPE! Cutscene time!".

Yeah, I mean it wasn't a perfect run by any means (I got hit once) and I didn't really MAXIMIZE MY COMBAT POTENTIAL as it were, but the fact that breaking up the bossfight with cutscenes can interrupt combos really bugs me. I get that it's part of the 'platforming' but it's still silly.

Not only that, I'm pretty sure you can use Devil Trigger on that boss, but I haven't tried it. That would make it even easier, I think.

And then there's this...

They both come from 4chan, so take them with a pinch of salt (though the gun looks genuine enough).
And DMC.org are making GBS threads themselves over two (contradictory and unverifiable) alleged endings that were posted there also. :haw:

So I've played the demo (also the PSN store has been giving an option of pre-ordering DmC for about two weeks now, I think - well before the demo was even available) and I really don't like this game. It's all right, it's passable, but the most problems I had during the demo was with camera and trying to find a place from which I can actually lift myself. I've played all DMCs but for the fourth one, and the combat really doesn't seem too similar, I had no problems with fights on Normal difficulty, which was a surprise, I couldn't lock-on, and so couldn't choose my targets. The boss was defeated using the pro strategy of "hold R2, mash Triangle, occasionally dodge, attain S rank regularly". I also liked that the loading screen was showing one long combo and one combo only. Loadings were weirdly long, too.

So that's uninteresting gameplay, but the meat of the game was supposed to be mature and thought-provoking story, right :downswords::hf::wth:? But that was disappointing, too - the "deep" dialogues were really uninspired and cliché, Dante's delivery during dialogues with Vergil was really flat and emotionless, and the stupid newscaster had more character and more interesting lines than Dante. The "witty" and "adult" dialogue was hilarious and gloriously stupid, but I don't think it was intended in this way - though maybe if Dante works on his one-liners during the course of the game and becomes a master punsmith and brilliant comedian, it would be an interesting character development.

The city environments were pretty, though.

In conclusion, this loving demo did not hold my loving interest for longer than it loving lasted, and now I don't even loving consider buying this loving game. gently caress!

Why are they spoiling all the upgrades and powerups to this game? One of my favorite parts of playing DMC3 for the first time was getting a new weapon, seeing the awesome little cutscene to go along with it, and trying it out in the next level. This sort of marketing is just alien and baffling to me.

Obviously fake stuff just to wind people up. But here they are;

That Dante somehow manages to forcefeed Demon Babby to Mundus in the style of Saturn devouring his son, and that the "vault" is actually a time/dimension machine powered by the tears of orphaned children - which is why the demons have those orphanages instead of just killing them - and Mundus is actually the same dude as in DMC1 - and New Dante bumps into Old Dante due to the effects of the vault or whatever.

From playing the PS3 demo, this seems to be Ninja Theory's best game yet. I feel like they have improved the gameplay side of their productions a lot with this game. That being said, I do not thing this is a good game in it's current state and definitely not a good Devil May Cry game. The performance on PS3 is unforgivably bad, it seems to be running consistently below 30fps which is near unplayable for an action game on any real level to me. The enemies pose no threat on nephalim (I haven't tried SoS after unlocking it yet), the scoring system seems busted, the camera and auto targeting are poor and the basic feel of the movement and combat is off. I'm pretty curious about the PC release now, I hope there is a demo so I can try out the game without the distraction of a constant low frame rate and get a better idea of what they are trying to do with the combat.

SoS adds in some new enemies and forces you to mix it up a bit more with the angel/devil system, but the basic mechanics are not great, no argument there.

Well I played it. Here are some positives:

Adding a visual and audio cue to pause strings is nice. Not really necessary for someone with my experience with action games but it is nice.

Environmental design is interesting at least. Things breaking apart and reforming is cool. The visual shift brought on by Devil Trigger is also enjoyable.

Jumping still has invincibility frames, which is a nice touch. I honestly wasn't expecting it.

Making the enemies bounce around with the axe is kind of satisfying.

And some negatives:

The pace of combat is slow. Not glacially or anything, but definitely not on the level of Bayonetta or the original DMC's. Seems comparable to God of War from my recollection.

I find the controls...cumbersome? Having to hold triggers to get different weapons isn't terrible, but it might just be me adjusting poorly to it.

Despite what I said above I still got SS in style in both scenarios. Scoring is very generous to the player, possibly to a fault.

The boss is pretty lackluster, and bad if we're comparing it to your typical high-speed action game. Bayonetta and DMC have had really cool first bosses, which makes Slurm Queen seem bad by comparison. At least she's better designed than most of the DMC 2 bosses. She's not fun, but she's not a chore really. Boss mechanics in this game could improve later of course.

The command for Devil Trigger is kinda dumb considering there are two dodge buttons for some reason. It builds super slow, but I guess it does put all (?) enemies in juggle state. Maybe they wanted to give it something like DT Explosion naturally, and making the bar build slow was the answer? Who knows.

The music in the first scenario was fine, but that song with the boss was terrible.

Anyway best Ninja Theory game yet. It'll probably be okay and definitely is better than DMC 2.

Oh yeah, the dialogue between Dante, Vergil, and the girl character was totally fine if a little eye-rolly, but man his interactions with the Slurm Queen was insufferable. Hey Ninja Theory, I'm a college graduate who has played every DMC. Hire me and I will write all the monster related dialogue interactions for you.

I forgot to mention - I left the tutorial prompts on (since the control scheme would be different from other DMCs I've played), and the first (and the only) time Devil Trigger Lift(?) was triggered all enemies suddenly ascended, I had no idea where they were, the camera was unhelpful (no lock-on also didn't help) and so I was utterly confused and didn't hit a single enemy :saddowns:

I would've preferred it if the shoulder buttons switched which weapons you were using between devil/angel/normal. Since there's only three you'd still be able to switch to any one you wanted with the shoulder buttons and the D-Pad can be used to switch what type of angel/demon weapon you're using.

The most frustrating thing about the demo, I think, is that Ninja Theory was clearly trying really really hard. They wanted to make a good game that they would be proud of. They weren't half-assing it. They just clearly do not understand how to make it. The Style system in this game represents just a fundamental misunderstanding of why that system existed. They knew it had to exist and so they put it in, but they don't know why. (IIRC they originally didn't even intend an onscreen message, just musical changes.)

The axe is another great example here. In the demo it doesn't even seem to have any meaningful alternate combos or anything. It's just a "heavy attack." It really stands out when playing Son of Sparda mode and fighting that dude near the start who can't be hurt except by the axe. All you can do is pound on him with button mashing. Maybe the alternate Devil Arms will help but that's really worrying. The scythe isn't much better, although it at least has a little more going for it than Heavy Attack.

I don't get why they thought it would be a good idea for the Ranking to stay the same unless you get hit. Standing idle and doing stuff other than combat should reset the thing to a lower level - that's the point of the thing - it's meant to keep players actively seeking combat to get higher scores for more orbs. What's the point otherwise?

And what's stranger is having the final ranking based seemingly soley on the style points over everything else:

And yes, at one stage they were just going to notify the player audibly. No onscreen stuff or anything, just by the (horrible) music.

I'm surprised Capcom kinda let NT do their own thing for the combat, and only seemingly came in to make a few alterations here and there, and offer advise and all that. Surely they can see that it's nowhere near the same standard as 4?

I suspect capcom were expecting a reset on the combat. Dmc4 had great combat, but it was getting extremely baroque by that point (and when you compare it to Bayonetta, which has much more elegant mechanics, you can see that they might be hoping ninja theory might take it in that direction - give them some great core mechanics to then build on). I'm just sad that ninja theory didn't wholesale steal dodge offset and bayonetta style counter/dodge rewards because they are the most gorgeous mechanics in any brawler style game ever.
