Where else would you need this quick of a crane besides a movie? Stuff down the line get's copied obviously, there are other film cranes available, some even that go on cars. But film people are professionals, so they don't comparison price shop for tools, they just know one works and the other doesn't. For example, maybe you've heard of a steadicam move? Well, the steadicam is a single dude's design, tiffen ended up buying them but it's still the goto piece of equipment for steadicam operators. As it's literally in their name.

Car commercials, every car commercial has one of these systems, either the Russian Arm, or the Ultimate Arm, or from Pursuit Systems... There's a number of competitors.

And car commercials are probably at least 50% of their work if not more.

They are awesome though, and theres a precision driver, a crane op, a head tech and they farm out the head op most of the time to specialists.

Ultimate Arm has a pretty good reel.

The head op is usually the camera operator on the shoot, sometimes the DP, very rarely the director.

With gear like this it is almost never the normal camera operator, unless they have zero budget.

But the camera head controls should be fairly standard, I think Preston makes a controller that's fairly popular. Certainly anything a camera op with some experience would be able to handle. Maybe he'd be labeled as B Camera Op but it'd only be a title difference, as he'd be doing the same function as an A Camera Op would be doing just with different equipment.

Mind you, the biggest thing I've ever worked on was sub 1-mil projects in Seattle, so I havn't really see gear like this much up here.

The head controls are different for each system.

I do this stuff for a living.

Anyway enough derailing, sorry.

Different strokes for different folks. I'll take the swearing, occasional browbeating, and massive feeling of accomplishment after a long shoot. You can stick to your uptight corporate office gig where you have to watch every word you say that might possibly offend someone.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. A film set is nothing like a normal job, and can't be compared to one in any way except its something people do to make money.

And I have seen punches thrown on set.

In Vancouver the RCMP have to wear their bright yellow jackets when they do speed traps, but you bet your rear end they are either hiding behind a bush/tree/corner with just the gun pointing out. that or they are hiding behind an unmarked Honda on the side of the road.

I dont know how more of them dont die when they suddenly step out into the middle of traffic to flag people over.

My big problem with Evans is why the gently caress do I care what he thinks about a car? Does he know? Clarkson had years as a legit journalist under his belt before top gear.

Evans gets in a McLaren and yells about how great it is but can he really judge that? Can he judge dynamics? What does he have to compare it to?

And he even has the gall to brag about ordering one. Clarkson has money, he owns some awesome cars but he never bragged about them, the only one I can remember is the GT that he bitched about constantly.

His main failing for me is replacing the amazing, funny and charming Craig Fergison, who should have stayed on TV forever. For those who didnt catch his show he basically did the good "Late show" period conan obrien thing with lots of goofy skits and props, and irreverent interviews with people who are used to having talk show hosts kiss their asses.

Cordon seems to be cranking out Post-Millennial horse poo poo designed to be funny on vine/instantgram

Ferguson was so good. He could have the most boring guest on, like an author or something, and make it an entertaining interview because hes just that entertaining on his own.
