Speaking of people with prior variety experience, i'm not surprised they stuffed the first few episodes with experienced people to make sure the show got off to a good start. But had Ji-Hyo been in many such things before this?

I think the 'pathetic' role has worked out quite well for him at this point. Because he garners so much sympathy from the audience, he's now considered one of the most popular members on the show. In later episodes when Running Man starts attracting huge crowds of fans during filming because of the show's popularity, it's surprising how many Gwangsoo signs pop up. Personally, he's my 2nd favorite member behind YJS.

Yup - made a stupid typo. They overlapped a little, but IY1 really didn't have a big presence overall in Korea, ratings-wise(esp after the member changes), and was a big factor in its early cancellation. The fanbase / 10-20s generation enjoyed it of course, but it failed to get the wider range of audience needed to keep the show alive. A bad side of Korean television culture is that a lot is determined by ratings - even if the show might be good, does good things, etc, if it doesn't get ratings (and therefore doesn't attract commercials), the Broadcasting Companies are likely to cancel it. Such a shame that IY1 got cancelled...

Also, I don't think Gwangsoo actually minds his character that much... Of course, it gathers sympathy, but it also helps him become more recognizable and distinct with such an early establishment of character - many newcomers to variety shows have trouble finding a character and sort of fade into the background doing odd things.

I agree they should probably put the spy stuff on the back-burner for now. They've used it a bit too often at this point, that everyone is immediately suspicious of everyone else right when the hide-and-seek missions start.

Instead I'd like them come up with more variations on how people get eliminated. The water gun concept has been used a bunch also, but there's plenty of other things they can think up. It might actually be interesting to just steal IC's tail-grabbing format (you're assigned a single person to eliminate, and once you do you then have to eliminate who they were assigned to eliminate).
I'd even settle for some more "crossing the rope bridge over the pool" type challenges.

I watched episodes 2 and 3 back-to-back. With these already being aired, I just can't wait to finished two-parters, so I'm glad you'll be posting them together from now on.

I'm loving all the guests from Family Outing showing up. It's so weird seeing Chunhee without his stepmother though, but it's nice to see he hasn't changed much. Smartly getting a free ride to the location... the wrong location.

Hara's still mostly the same too. Stealthy and sneaky. Not as much stealing as I would have expected. I was also surprised there was no rules for catching the other team this time. Maybe they needed to reconsider it after the first episode resulted in them ripping the entire sewn-on tag from the jumpsuit instead of simply peeling the name off.

Without Hyori, the picture challenge wasn't AS fun, but still managed to be pretty drat fun. Something about everyone shoving each other like fussy children and making funny faces (and Gary) is just good television.

My favorite parts had to be Kwangsoo on the diving boards, constantly debating between 7.5m and 10m. The Oldboy and Lady Vengeance soundtracks just go with everything, don't they? I also loved them searching the stadium seats, and the crew getting exhausted, and the cast all taking a break to playfully pick on them for it. Also during that search, Kwangsoo's sudden burst of speed to get the last piggy bank.

Oh, and the soccer goal challenge. Kwangsoo hangs there and deflects balls. Joong-Ki hangs there... and is too short, so they all casually kick the balls in under him. I laughed so hard at that.

I was also surprised to see that Jong-kook got his "Spara-kook" nickname so early in the show. And that is sticks for so long.

Alright that's a bit of subber fail as well...

The phrase Sukjin says is "에어콘 좀 빡쌔게 틀어줘", which phonetically is close to "Aircon zhom Bbak-sae-gae tuel-uh-zeoh". Bbak-sae-gae is sort of a modifying word /adj to make sth more extreme.
The insertion of the word into the normal phrase "turn on (the AC)" makes it into something like: "Dad please friggen blast the AC"

Korean word for A/C is indeed AirCon, except the pronunciation has slipped a bit into something like "Air Kkon".

Korean words for dick that are generally used: gochu (somewhat mild slang), zhot (basically a curse), guh-si-gi (lit. means "that thing"), and Jaji (hard slang).

Don't really see anything that might sound like what sukjin says.

I might be misremembering, but isn't gochu "pepper?"

Going back to the editing of the show, my comments of the first episode were that they had completely edited out an entire segment of the challenge. Removing a few people taking on a challenge is to be expected at times or editing the show to not follow everyone at the same time is normal. So the editing of the show seems to have improved real fast, and I'm happy about that.

Some quick thoughts on today's episode (Ep 76).

- Chun Hee's back! And he's his usual pathetic self! Hooray!

- Gwangsoo FINALLY gets to be an actual spy!

- The rest of the episode was pretty weak. This was probably the most unbalanced hide-and-seek ever. The capture team literally outnumbered the mission team, AND two of them were spies. I'm pretty sure elementary school kids could have won with those odds. Also it was obvious that the capture team could've eliminated 3 people within 5 minutes of the last mission starting, but let them all get away to drag things out.

- It also didn't help that the whole last 10 minutes was just a montage of Jong Kook running from computer to computer while his pursuer was on the other side of the building. This really didn't need to be a 90-minute episode.

Hopefully next week's is better.

I see what you mean about the mission being stupid, but I thought it was still pretty entertaining except for that last bit with Jong Kook. That sort of running around is only fun if it's somebody like Jae Suk who you don't really expect to be the last man standing. It's always good when jong kook is a little afraid of the guests, though.

I really liked Sangwook making the female staff member knock the door to the restroom to confuse Jae Suk. Ji Hyo's complaint about them picking the worst possible spy was good too.

The rear end in a top hat got what was coming to him though. You guys probably aren't familiar with this, but he tried his hand at movies after succeeding as a slapstick comedian in the 80s. He directed a string of absolutely horrid movies (ex: D-War). His latest movie and the one he was trying to promote in that RM ep, "The Last Godfather," was a terrible movie that bombed.

His company went bankrupt with something like $6 mil in debt and hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid wages for the workers. He also used his company money for personal gambling (actually illegal in Korea) at a foreigner casino, and used money in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was also accused of being apparently involved in the directing of prostitution towards government officials in order to gain their favor. He also illegally converted a gas gun into a deadlier version for threatening his employees who asked for their unpaid wages. He was also sued for fraud as he tricked investors into giving him money for a movie that he never produced. Considering he received tons of government support (and thus the Korean taxpayer money), he had a responsibility to use the money wisely/effectively; instead, like little child, he spent it on himself and his whims, not even paying his employees their wages. Basically, he was an idiot and a scumbag totally over his head in managing a company that only managed to get there thanks to his previous popularity.

I think he has to end up coughing up like $10 million dollars or something like that in total damages/fines/loans/whatever. He hasn't shown any remorse for what he has done either, publicly denying most of the accusations until they were proven true in court. Personally, I hope the bastard scumbag rots in prison for the rest of his life.

Back to RM: Yeah, when a scumbag like that comes on as a guest, you definitely aren't gonna get a good ep. Don't get the wrong idea about older comedians in general though, the vast majority are good, or at least decent, human beings and generally know their place when they appear as guests in newer-gen variety shows.

Episodes: 4 + 5
Location: Gwacheon National Science Museum
Guests: Song Ji-Hyo (2nd App.) Jessica (Idol, SNSD) Nichkhun (Idol, 2PM)

1 2 3 4

I’m uncertain whether Ji-Hyo is technically still not a regular, so she’s a guest again. The other two guests this week are both foreigners; Jessica, as you may have guessed from her name, is American, while Nichkhun is Thai and research suggests has lived all over the place. Just as an aside, it’s remarkably surprising if you’re watching some show and suddenly a girl switches unexpectedly from fluent Korean into English and what’s probably one of the most stereotypically Valley Girl accents I’ve ever heard. And yes, if you’ve been following along with the Invincible Youth thread, this is yet another SNSD girl, and there’s still plenty others.

The contrast between the two first tasks really seems as though there was supposed to be some choice or game to decide who got which, rather than it just being assigned to them. Unlike last week, I can’t really sympathise with the fear of the iguanas. Snakes, maybe, but iguanas are alright. And then probably one of my favourite bits so far, with the pool high jump, which is hilarious in and of itself even before the entire red team decide to gently caress with Gary and Kwang-Soo being drowned.

The next task also seems pretty skewed in favour of the blue team, with Jae-Suk being much easier prey than Jong-Kook. I suppose this is also technically the first hide and seek game in the show; expect plenty more of these in the future. And finally for the first part, bin boules, in which they could have at least turned Suk-Jin round a bit.

-----------------------------------------------

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

(Hopefully this is just my computer, which has been on the blink lately, but there may be sound delays here. I couldn’t find a Youtube version which didn’t have them, but it’s possible it’s just me.)

The thing I notice most after watching both halves of this is… Jessica’s really not the best of guests. After Goo Ha-Ra last time setting the bar so high for idol guests (not to mention IV), in comparison she’s just not all that interesting here. Anyway. After the end of the bin game, it’s another round of getting your face in the picture, this time back in the pool, and with the return of everyone’s favourite peaceful subject. They’re also still at the stage of the show where the cast decide on their own to come up with some rules for tasks, which works pretty well and actually sticks around, though to a lesser extent. And another pig hunt, though I have to say if I were locked in a museum overnight I’m pretty sure I’d be playing around just like Jae-Suk. And serious kudos to that crew member’s stamina and balance.

After the dance-off; Stripping! Can’t say that I’m the best judge of these matters, but possibly there’s something of interest to watchers of the right persuasion in the bus challenge, but there’s not very much to say about it other than that it gives the male cast a chance to be massive cheaters again. Finally there’s more golden pigging, and probably the coolest pig location so far with the observatory roof closing. The winners seem somewhat unfair; while the coins do allow a bit more nuance in scoring as well as not really knowing who’s doing well until the end, it’s a bit too random for how much effort is put in.

Next time; A familiar face for the IV thread followers! Probably not one of the ones you're hoping for!

Jessica actually has one of the most entertaining personalities out of all the SNSD members, but even her fans(nor she) won't deny her lethargy and lack of athleticism. That's why I found it funny, they literally couldn't have picked someone less suited to this than they did. She was pretty entertaining in episode 63-64, at least. But like I said, her sister inherited all the athletic ability in her family rather than her :v:

And if you think she has a valley girl accent, how would you describe Tiffany? :psyduck:

Khun is always a good guest for these sorts of things, certain idols like he and Minho are pretty well known for their competitiveness. And like you said it's kind of interesting seeing how Jaesuk used to explain some of the tasks himself, but I guess it makes more sense the way it is now. Nowadays what with all the mystery guests and seperate missions it makes more sense for the PD to do it.

edit: Also I watched episode 76 andI didn't think it was as bad as some people said. Granted the initial odds did seem ridiculous(4 guests + 2 spies vs the remaining 5 cast members), but once I realized that it was actually possible for the chasers to get knocked out of the game for once it didn't seem so bad. Some pretty funny parts in there, too. Like when they recruit Kwangsoo and he's like OH MAN GUYS THIS IS GONNA BE SO COOL :haw: Then when they got Jihyo she's just like 'why did you pick Kwangsoo...'.

In regards to that, I think a large part of her being better came from them being split into smaller teams (as well as the car journeys) - essentially, she had to pull her weight and get involved. Unlike here, where she's often just mucking around in the background.

Well, i'm not American, so these things are less distinct to me. To my ears, both of them when speaking English sound incredibly valley-girl-ish. To the extent that it sounds put on, even (though I know it isn't).

Nichkhun's good fun. I think the two things that are really necessary to be a successful guest on these types of shows are gameness and a willingness to get involved of their own accord, both of which he certainly has. And he's certainly the only person to have had basically their entire family on the show.

Nickhun is always a good guest, as he's one of the few people who's willing to go head to head with Jong Kook, and I believe he's been on the 2nd most number of episodes as a guest, the first being my FAVORITE guest of the series, Yonghwa!

Things I loved about these episodes include Jae Suk messing with Gary throughout the various challenges (especially in the pool), Suk Jin still being funny with his family anecdotes and his positioning during the trash curling game, the astronaut holding onto the golden pig, and the HILARIOUS bus challenge. Gary getting his shirt ripped is still some of the hardest I've ever laughed watching the show.

I believe this is the last time we'll ever see the golden pig format. Beginning with the next episode, they introduce a reward format that will become the norm on the show for many, many episodes to come.
