I got a new indie rock rec here: it's This Won't Be the Last Time from acloudyskye. The sound is a throwback to the 2000s era of indie rock (the vocalist sounds like straight out of that era) but there's a lot of electronic touches and the album is washed with shoegaze guitars. Actually, maybe the reason why you've not heard of this artist is because earlier in his career he made straight up EDM but with an album last year he made the change to rock. Now, I'm not a big fan of indie rock from the aughts but the noisy guitars and dream pop touches it helps the medicine go down. I also like the drumming on this one.

Car Seat Headrest put out a new single for their upcoming album and I'm liking it! The album is going to be a rock opera? There's a lot funny little guys in the album visuals which I really dig.

A week ago I stumbled onto a random jangle pop blog and went looking at some of the newer releases. Saw this album by Pale Lights, a band I've never heard of before, and went "hey they are aping If You're Feeling Sinister" and yeah, the music is very Belle and Sebastian adjacent. And I like it!

I like the new Black Country New Road, but it does kind of require me to pretend that it's a completely different band that just happens to have the same name as the band that released two of my favourite albums of the last decade, as it's so different to their first albums as to be basically unrecognisable.

Pretty much. The sound is entirely different but, at the end of the day, these are incredibly meticulous and interesting songs with a lot of heart which does fit with the general ethos of the band. The caveat here is that James Ford loving suuuucks on this. Maybe it'll grow on me, but I hate this production. Someone on RYM described it as everything being smashed into a hydraulic press. I wasn't that bothered by it on the singles but it's really apparent over the course of the album what a bad fit this is.

Felt this way about the last Bright Eyes album too. I assume this is for some kind of streaming optimization or something but this extreme compression (or whatever it is) trend needs to go.

Kinda wish I hadn’t read this before listening because it’s all I can think about while listening and it’s bothering me. Especially the vocals. They’re mixed high and have very little dynamics going on so it’s kinda tiring when every song is like that

:yeah:

I'm listening to it now and it's fine, but it's not blowing me away like the previous albums did. No real strong highlights for me yet. Even the live album was better than this.

e: New Sleigh Bells didn't impress me all that much either :smith: I guess it's cool that they're still doing their thing, but they've made better albums with a similar sound.

Forgot Momma came out today. Their last one was great.

I haven’t listened to Sleigh Bells in, like, 15 years, but I’ve enjoyed the 3 tracks they put out ahead of the album. Makes me consider listening to their entire discography. Even if nothing hits the heights of that first album.

I feel like Reflektor was the beginning of the end of the band for me, quality wise. I felt like you could cut most of the songs in half, and they would have worked better. But as it was presented, it was fatiguing.

It was also the point where Win’s lyrics started to become comically earnest, and just lost the plot. We Exist is a well intentioned song, but it felt more like a writing exercise to me than an actual empathetic song.

It was clear that the band had lost its focus. The first two albums were tight, and while the Suburbs started to sprawl a little bit, the highs it hit were enough to overcome a little bloat. But Reflektor just felt bloated. It didn’t help that the band’s preference for a sound that could best be described as a worn cassette being played through blown out speakers made the thing a physically fatiguing listen.

I know I’m making it sound all bad, and it wasn’t. Reflektor was a good song, and a lot of the tracks had good songs in them. They just needed an editor.

Everything Now was where they fell off quality wise. The lyrics got comically bad, like in Everything Now. Win was trying to write an anthem it felt like, but instead it just felt like the soundtrack to a corporate PR video. Creature Comforts is laughable. It has nothing to say about people’s pursuit of fame. Of course, I think it’s fundamentally hard for a songwriter on a major label to really identify with people desperate for fame. Computer Blue misused Regine’s vocals, making her sound shrill and indistinct. God, what an awful album.

After that, the abuse allegations made me drop off completely. And the thing that made me nope out was his response - he admitted to having a relationship with these women, but everything was above board. And the stuff from the album that I heard that came out around that time was better than Everything Now, but just kind of like a second rate Killers, making them a third rate Bruce Springsteen.

Bismack Billabongo

Theres a part on the We album where he sings “i unsubscribe”. Lmao.

I like about three arcade fire songs but at this point i think the FJM and mr. Little jeans covers of The Suburbs are better than the original

I remember back around ‘06 I borrowed a hdd from a friend and it had a ton of indie rock/folk albums from that era. That concluded my experience with arcade fire
