St. Vincent's show at Coachella looks loving crazy and really makes me want to see her live despite not being as familiar with her music as I probably should be :stare:

apparently, this was a new stage show for the next leg of her tour, which addresses the complaints people had about the tour so far. she has actual on-stage band members and more production? some of that may be coachella-specific but the official email I got did say "debut of her new live show" so, yeah

I've really been enjoying this album — thanks for the recommendation. I like what I read in an interview with the singer: "We always want to write upbeat dance music, and I can’t write lyrics that are happy."

There's some great music coming out of NZ these days. Not only is our folk scene fuckin' exploding (with Aldous Harding, Marlon Williams and Nadia Reid all taking off), we've got some great dirty synth stuff too.

Also the new Kimbra album dropped the other day, which is great too.

They have a show in Brooklyn, probably because that's where they lived for a while and made the album. No Vancouver show announced either but they're playing Skookum fest in Sept so will likely announce something. I bought a Friday pass for the festival just to see dear rouge and Arkells.

yeah i agree, the first album is great, second album is ok, after that he got p boring though i do like "little women" and so am somewhat hopeful for this album (just listening now. not at all a fan of the tracks with rainsford and haim)

he's great when he's being weird/creepy/dark. when he goes all saccharine and poppy is just super generic and blah

edit: finished the album and yeah... its real boring

I really wish they'd go back to their older sound :smith:

There's a reason I was blown the gently caress away by Before The Dawn Heals Us when I first heard it in '05 and loved everything they put out for the next several years, but Junk really didn't do much of anything for me. Barely any of those songs resonated with me in the same way that, say, the majority of songs on Hurry Up, We're Dreaming did.

I honestly really did enjoy the change that Junk was. Solitude ranks up there as "best of M83" for me, and I loved Laser Gun, Sunday Night 1987, and Atlantique Sud. But overall, you're totally right, the album didn't really speak to me like pretty much all of Hurry Up We're Dreaming did :smith: Give me Steve McQueen and We Own The Sky over anything on Junk.

e: Lower your eyelids is still my #1 M83 track of all time, just saying

When Moonchild kicks in at 0:51, it still manages to make every hair on my body stand straight up even like 13 years after first hearing it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsjYfqbrju0

That song is one of the most powerful pieces of music I've ever heard in my life, no lie. Hearing it for the first time on headphones as a teenager was like finding god for me.

And Car Chase Terror is still one of the scariest songs I've ever heard:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALBJsKpt7Kg

There's a palpable sense of urgency and dread to that whole album, feelings that a lot of other music doesn't even come close to evoking.

Ugh, I love that track so much. M83 remains my favourite artist/band still, after all these years, because of moments like that. There's so many tracks they make that can literally bring me to tears or send shivers down my spine.

This is my "hair standing up" track as I mentioned before, like Moonchild is yours:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsFSUCKolzg

Ugh I can't listen to this enough, if I could choose one desert island track, it'd be this one. Seeing it live was the closest to a religious experience I've been.

I didn't get a single track from BTDHU when I saw them live 2 years ago, but I did get a handful of tracks from HUWD that I wanted to see, along with We Own The Sky which is also on my top 10 M83 songs list:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ-sKXuauTY

Although narrowing down my top 10 favorite songs of theirs is pretty loving hard because they have so much great music going back over 15 years. Like this is definitely on that list:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NhSuS93QKQ

And this too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzWj-_qUBI4

Okay, now that I think about it, narrowing it down to 10 is nearly impossible :negative:

I don't know that I'd ever heard the You and the Night score, but that piece is otherworldly.

I saw Oblivion in IMAX, so getting to hear that score on a huge sound system was such a delight :swoon:

Actually, listening to Un Nouveau Soleil now, M83 has probably been more influential on my own songwriting than I think I ever realized before. Woah.
