I've recently been digging The National pretty hard the past month or so. I just saw they are going to be in Cincinnati, Ohio next month and thats about 35 minutes from me. Must see? Underwhelming live? Any insight appreciated before I pull the trigger.

The National is not performing at that festival, but they did last year. Bryce Dessner is curating it/will be performing in collaboration with Nico Muhly and Sufjan Stevens.

The new Dirty Projectors album, Swing Lo Magellan is officially released tomorrow in the US, but it's been available for streaming online for the past week or so. I've only given the new album a cursory listen but I really enjoy it. I found my experience listening to this album for the first time less jarring than when I first listened to Bitte Orca (which I love, but it took me a few days of listening to it before it clicked with me). I'll be seeing them tonight and tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to how the new material will sound live.

To those interested, at 10 p.m. Eastern there will be a live stream of tonight's album release show in Brooklyn at: http://www.youtube.com/bowerypresents

The audience kind of sucked though. I got a lovely spot in the back. I could see just fine, but lots of people around me were either talking over the music, looking down at their phones the entire time, only cheering when Penelope was played, etc. I don't get why some people go to shows if they're not into the music, and that seemed to apply to like half the audience tonight

Well, to be fair, that pretty much sums up every general admission live concert experience.

Re Chvrches shows: I saw them at Webster Hall back in June, and while they weren't, like, excellent (I don't think Lauren's voice plays all that well live), the music was still a bunch of fun even if more than half the tracks they played were unheard at that point. But after the show ended and they had played their Prince cover as the encore, there were small circles of people actually breaking out DANCING waiting to file out of the auditorium. The energy they put into everyone was just nuts.

So, naturally, I'm going to see them Sunday.

FYI, Chvrches is playing the much smaller Studio at Webster Hall this Friday and tickets are, inexplicably, still available.

Incidentally, here's David Byrne sort-of rapping.

I saw St. Vincent last night and attended that event where David Byrne performed "Just a Friend" the night before. St. Vincent's theatrics definitely appeared to be Byrne-influenced and it all seemed to loosely reflect to the whole Digital Witness moniker of the tour. For those one the fence about catching these live shows, I second the recommendation for checking it out.

David Byrne covering Biz Markie wasn't just a completely random thing, though. The event where it happened was held to create awareness of how royalties for songs played on terrestrial radio don't go to the song performers or session musicians; only the songwriters. All the songs performed that night were songs that were popularized by artists whose songs don't generate royalties for them when played on the radio, like "Wild Thing" and "Hanging on the Telephone."

I've caught them twice in NYC in smaller venues than they seem to be playing this tour. The music is great and fun to dance to, though, so I hope you have a blast.

St. Vincent's live show this tour is very regimented; there's choreography involved and the setlist doesn't seem to vary much from show to show. I'm pretty sure the random banter is always the same ("Your favorite word is 'orgiastic'"), too. The music itself is, in my opinion, pretty great, though. I personally prefer Sharon's earlier material, but that's mostly because I was first exposed to her as a solo act. Rest assured, however, that the set lists for this tour have mostly focused on material from Are We There. Enjoy the show!
