Yo, check out The Weeks, they're pretty awesome (especially if you happen to like Kings of Leon).

So I posted these guys a few months ago, and they've since released a new album, so check it out!

Is this a Mississippi group? I noticed you have a Dan Mullen avatar and the first song mentions Mississippi and then I noticed the cover for Rumpsringa....which I saw in the "local" section at my local record store.

Yes sir, they got together at Delta State I believe. They're based out of Nashville now.

Those commercials are the bee's knees. Fightin' Okra is the best mascot

Because it's simple, catchy driving music, I've listened to Gorilla Manor disproportionate to how much I actually like it. It's an ok album with a couple stand out songs, namely "Wide Eyes" and "Who Knows Who Cares". Their new song is pretty cool, regardless.

Also Woods are great and the new album kicks rear end, maybe more than At Echo Lake. Definitely a bit more of a psych rock throwback album, which isn't a bad thing.

I can't tell you how many times I've sung along to Gorilla Manor on long drives

The new Local Natives drops this week, and it's absolutely worth your time. My favorite release of the month.

Two solid singles in Breakers and Heavy Feet, some really pretty moments in Three Months and Mt. Washington, and a really strong second half as a whole. Top marks and all that.

I'm a big fan of Bowery as well. Great CD overall though.

Yeah after listening through Hummingbird a few times I like it a lot lot lot. It's got a long way to go before it passes the obscene number of plays I gave Gorilla Manor, though.

Got to see The Weeks last night and they put on a great show. They'll be touring with Kings of Leon in Europe this summer I think (or maybe Fall, not sure). Anyways, check 'em out if you've never heard them. http://theweeksmusic.tumblr.com/

More interesting was a band that opened for them - Junior Astronomers. I was blown away by how awesome they were. You can get both their tapes for free at bandcamp http://juniorastronomers.bandcamp.com/. My personal favorite song is Fox and the Hound.

I think The Weeks are really good, but I probably wouldn't classify them as "Southern Folk Rock." Or maybe my view of folk rock is just too narrow.

Anyway I'm disappointed I've never seen 'em. I live in Mississippi and we have a pretty good track record for our good homegrown bands making lots of rounds around the hotspots of Mississippi before making it big, but I hadn't even heard of them until they did indeed hit it "big."

They put on a great show. I've seen 'em once in Memphis and twice in Starkville. Definitely check 'em out next time they're around. I think they're touring Europe with Kings of Leon soonish but I'm sure they'll be back around these parts afterwards.

La Blogotheque put out a video of some dudes covering some Johnny Cash songs that were released on that album recently. The first two are pretty good, but Local Natives knocks it out of the park with their contribution.

Local Natives do really good covers, which makes me wish Hummingbird had been nothing but covers. Or just a better album.

Hummingbird grew on me after a few listens. Probably not as consistently good as Gorilla Manor, but I think Breakers and Bowery beat out anything on GM (aside from maybe Who Knows, Who Cares).

Posted it in the Punk thread but it belongs here too - Topshelf Records has (almost) their whole catalog up for pay-what-you-want for the next 24 hours. They have a lot of punk/emo, but a fair bit of indie as well. Get some good music folks.
