Sadly there is nothing like that first Foals album. I feel your pain. It's such an incredible album, and nothing sounds remotely like it. Fortunately there are a lot of singles, b-sides and demos from that era of the band. Surely you've heard these:

It's really such a shame that they're so boring now. They used to be so unique. Yannis is still hot at least.

This samples "Talking" by Haruomi Hosono, from his Watering a Flower release, which was made as background music for Muji stores. It's a really unique piece of music, check it out:

Most of these bands had disappointing follow ups so I'm looking for something along these veins that I haven't heard yet.

edit - Im also aware of how cliche this all is as well!

IDK how you feel about the Shins but the one Flake Music album is really good.

Just saw Charly Bliss on a whim after seeing this thread talking about how good they are live and holy poo poo y’all did not steer me wrong. Eva Hendricks has so much contagious energy and enthusiasm, and she and the rest of the band are super tight performers. I yelled for Steal My Sunshine when they were coming on for the encore but she kind of chuckled and said “oh, no” into the mic and then they played Mr. Brightside instead.

Anyway, go see them. They’re great. If you’re kinda iffy on the new album like I was, the new songs have more energy and dynamics live. Plenty of Guppy stuff too.

Okay that's a bit much, but I agree that the new Battles track ain't it. It's very repetitive and doesn't have their usual dynamics and depth. They probably should've disbanded when Dave Konopka left, but I'm still curious to see what this album's like.

It shocks me that I am the first to report this here, but Charly Bliss have a new EP out and it's really good. Previous non-album highlight "Heaven" is on here, followed up by what is now one of my top three songs of theirs. Check it out. If Young Enough turned you off, you'll be happy to find that the boring synth pads were just a phase and they're back to the guitar jams. This song is seriously so good.

You guys hear this new single from Slow Pulp? Slow, sweet pop rock for Soccer Mommy/Snail Mail/etc fans. Album isn't out til October but this single is good enough to last me til then.

Modest Mouse is probably one of my top 5 favorite bands ever. They were my absolute, clear favorite for many years back in high school and college, and I still LOVE their pre-Good News stuff although I don't listen to them quite as frequently anymore

My fav ~deep cut~ is definitely Broke, that held the #1 spot on my Audioscrobbler account for years

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlqgijgd3d0

Ugh, Broke is so good. Building Nothing Out of Something I think is my favorite MM release. I have a tattoo on my arm of the hot air balloon anchor thing from the Good News album art, lol.

While we're on the subject of their early gems, here's the best track on the otherwise-skippable Sad Sappy Sucker.

Here's a couple things I can't get enough of recently.

First here's Skating Polly, a band that was apparently really popular for established rock musicians to rep for a while. The drummer of Flaming Lips used to wear their shirts at shows. Anyway their singer is super young, she was 16 when this album came out. Lots of natural talent, she does a pretty startlingly spot-on Courtney Love on a few songs but this one's sweeter and less screechy. Heavy Plumtree vibes, very earnest, reminds me a lot of being in love in high school.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNdiPi6Sy3o

We're gonna change gears to post-punk for the next one. This is Sweeping Promises, a brand-new Boston band. Pretty minimal three-piece doing what would ordinarily be by-the-book post-punk but their singer is loving astonishing. Crazy pipes on her, in a genre normally defined by pretty restrained performances. The back half of the album has that cool, sophisticated sound that Omni pull off so well, but with a female singer it's even more unique and classy sounding. She's also not a hot, skinny white girl, which is very cool. Blue and Falling Forward are standouts for sure, but honestly the whole album is just impeccably made. An absolute, front-to-back banger of a first album. Very excited to hear more from them.

Here's something modern for you increasingly-out-of-touch old fucks. I've been listening to a lot of this new wave of DIY heavy shoegaze that's been gaining some traction recently. There's a bunch of bands to talk about, I'll give you a few.

Momma is a great one to start off with, they're probably the most commercial, less shoegaze more grunge. Very reminiscent of Veruca Salt but with better guitar work. They namecheck Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement and poo poo. Their new album is really, really good. Here's one of my favorites from it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1maB9SVrtk

They also do this weird knotty kinda Pinback-inflected introspective thing sometimes that I love, there's some of that here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAuSXTyY1lc

Hotline TNT has been all I can listen to for months too. Frontman is the guy from Weed, and was also in Blue Smiley and Happy Diving. They've put out like four EPs and a full-length. They tour like crazy and are constantly recording. Keep an eye on them.

"Hotline TNT" is the name this guy uses for this project, it's all him writing everything and he tours with a lot of different musicians. The bassist in this video is the frontman of Toner, whom I'll get to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOcAFJF-EqQ

(this whole release is fire, unbelievable that this is the first thing they put out)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrbrfc4_KIg

They Are Gutting a Body of Water are maybe more traditional shoegaze, but they intersperse these weird breakbeat sections with chopped-up samples and stuff. It's an engaging listen for sure. Here's their very recent Audiotree performance; you should listen to their full-length entitled Destiny XL too. They have new stuff on the way very soon as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGlcCFCxByk

Toner are really cool. Of these bands they're probably the least hesitant to rip a guitar solo, which gives them an almost Fang Island quality at times. They have two great albums out and they tour a poo poo-ton as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHDtDuw9CGM

Anyway I'm seeing Hotline TNT and Momma open for Snail Mail this week, with a secret Hotline TNT show the night before. Super stoked.

Saw that show I mentioned earlier tonight. Hotline TNT were great and I’d definitely like to hear a longer set from them. The lovely guitars and old amps wailing feedback really gave some texture.

Momma were super impressive, onstage they look like they’re barely out of high school but they’re very tight and professional. Their cover of “Divine Hammer” by the Breeders was pure joy. Their first headline tour is coming through my town in October and I wasn’t sure if I was down but now I’m definitely going to that show. See them live if you can.

Snail Mail was better than expected. I wasn’t really into Valentine but the drummer put a lot of muscle into making those songs energetic and engaging live. They covered “Tonight, Tonight” by the Smashing Pumpkins which was kind of a weird pick but they did a great job with it.

Saw Momma again tonight, they kicked rear end. Smaller venue than when we saw them open for Snail Mail in August, which was nice. It was impressive how tight they were while still having fun and seeming loose and spontaneous. For an encore they played the first verse and chorus of Undone (The Sweater Song) before going into Double Dare which was pretty funny. They're touring with Death Cab For Cutie once they wrap up this tour and I can't overemphasize how good a live act they are. Get on it before they blow up like I know they will.

Thanks for posting, I hadn't heard of Emperor X before. That Western Teleport album is really something. I agree though, that's a hosed up thing to do to your most popular song. Found another recent live video of his where he says that he's recently been really into Everything But the Girl, and reworked the song in the style of that band. I don't think he really hit the mark there, but at least I have an entire new-to-me artist to get into.
