Is this the only place on the forums to talk about the new Animal Collective album?? I'm really surprised there isn't a dedicated thread for the new album.

I might have missed talk about this already, but what's everyone think of the new War on Drugs album? I've only listened to it a few times through since picking it up yesterday but I'm ridiculously impressed so far, to the point where I don't really see anything topping this for best album of the year.

It's really incredible. I think it would be slightly stronger with one of the more samey tracks cut - maybe Suffering? - but otherwise I think it'll be my album of the year too.

They're incredible live too - their live set on KEXP sounds better than the album sometimes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbzV2Y06G-E

Is the thread where I can post about the new album of The War on Drugs: Lost in the Dream and how awesome it is?

It is awesome with the whole eighties rock feeling it has going on.

This is probably going to be my album of the year by far. And this is coming from a guy that usually wants to immediately turn off any album that chases the 80s aesthetic. The War On Drugs is one of the few bands that has gotten significantly better with each release and I'm really excited to see what they do in the future.

I think El Pintor is better than Self-Titled, but that's not saying much at all. They really need to try something different but I don't think they have the momentum, they all seem pretty tired by this point. If their next album was very dancey and upbeat, like the more energetic tracks from Antics, that could be cool... Or if they switched up the instrumentation... Or if the album centered around a few epic 10+ minute tracks... whatever. I think they've explored every possible facet of "the Interpol sound" and now it's boring as hell.

They're a Swedish psych rock band with a kind of afropunkish vibe that claim to be a voodoo cult. They'll definitely be touring for their new album so watch the schedule - these guys are really, really amazing live. Just jump to any point in this video:

Both of these, but especially Blowtorch, sound dramatically worse than anything else in their catalogue... kind of a shame... I always hoped they'd explore "weirder" stuff but they've gone in the opposite direction.

I think the new Sufjan album is one of his best, if not his best. With his recent work's focus on theming and complex, large-scale compositions, it's easy to forget that this guy is also a master at writing vocal melodies. His melodies here are as good as they've ever been, and the whole thing is much more impactful because rather than writing songs about seemingly arbitrary, external things (old stories, cities in illinois, places in michigan, the brooklyn queens expressway, etc), he's writing about deeply personal experiences and you can feel the result.

NPR is streaming the new Beach House album, the new Destroyer album, and the new Yo La Tengo album starting today. I love how NPR has evolved over the years and is now this weird indie music powerhouse with amazing access to new music.

Listening to the Destroyer album first... wowee kazowee, track three or whatever rules!! I didn't like KAPUTT at all, this sounds a lot better to me already.

Hi I don't venture in here much but is anyone talking at all about Joanna Newsom's new track? I doubt it's gonna sway any new listeners but it's a hell of a song with the kind of lyrical complexity you expect from her more long-form songs packed into a sweet little ditty. Her voice is a little less thin than in the last album also, liking how it's changing for the better. Also, that climax at the end, my goodness

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky9Ro9pP2gc

I like this a little less than the tracks I like off her previous albums, but it's still really good. For some reason this "feels long" to me. When I listen to Emily, which is like 9 minutes, it goes by in no time at all. This is only 5 minutes but feels longer... not sure why. edit: This video is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson?? Whoa!

Yeah, that's the one, I forgot that you could see an individual tracklist on NPR music's player.

Destroyer is one of my favorite bands of all time and it bugs me that so many people seem to have listened to Kaputt and nothing else by him. Kaputt came out at a time where tone trumped all else and anything with a lush, 80s aesthetic got rave reviews. It's really one of his weakest albums. If anywhere here likes Destroyer at all and hasn't listened to Destroyer's Rubies, Streethawk: A Seduction, This Night, Thief, Trouble in Dreams, and Your Blues (yes! even Your Blues!), then for god's sake, launch spotify and hit it all up.

Probably worth noting that "Archer on the Beach" is on Poison Season and has been kicking around for a few years too.

The Archer on Poison Season is a completely new arrangement (I didn't recognize it at all), and it's WAY better than the take from the original EP. Which is great!! For comparison, the Bay of Pigs on the end of Kaputt was just basically identical, except for chopping off 3 minutes and adding another vocal track.

I'm seeing them in the middle of October, but I wasn't really thrilled by the new album. Granted, I only listened to it all the way through once. I mean, it was fine, but none of the songs really leapt out at me.

The big problem is that the songs are too drat short!! They introduce a loop, immediately jump into full orchestration, and then end the track right as you start to feel it. When you primarily work with loops you need to give your music time to breathe. All of the best Battles tracks are the ones that are like 7+ minutes long, and here almost everything is between 3 and 5.

Let me know how Radio City is for shows. One of the worst shows I ever saw was at a seated venue because everyone stood up anyways... so it's just like a normal concert except you can't move from your spot. Tall people were in front of us so we couldn't see poo poo or do anything about it!

I generally try to make two playlists a year - one "best of" that's 20-30 tracks, and another "runners up" that I don't place a limit on.

Anyways, here's a 2015 ten-track playlist that draws from both. I purposely took out the stuff that people in this thread are guaranteed to already have heard - A real "best of" list would have something from the Tame Impala album, a Sufjan track, a Kendrick track, more pop, Hotline Bling, etc, but you've probably already heard those a thousand times. And if you haven't, whaa?? Stop and listen to those first!!

https://open.spotify.com/user/djvecchitto/playlist/3PlsHg9cpIZjBBVNGfMTpu

Notes:
• It's really hard picking one track from Junun - if you like that track, check out the whole album - except for a slump in the middle it's pretty excellent. If you don't start tapping your foot or nodding your head at 2:02, you might not be human
• Ought's Sun Coming Down is a truly excellent album that I feel everyone overlooked
• Frog Eyes's "Joe With The Jam" is the definition of a grower... I actively disliked it the first time I heard it, but now it's one of my favorite tracks of the year.

Beautiful Blue Sky definitely has the most overt lyrics – although I bet the feeling heavy handedness comes at least partially from his vocal delivery, as every single word is enunciated so clearly that each word slams into your ear.

Deerhoof's new album is streaming in full on npr music here:

http://www.npr.org/2016/06/03/480602873/first-listen-deerhoof-the-magic

I'm not all the way through it yet but it sounds pretty good so far. I used to be a huge deerhoof fan but have been generally disappointed with their last 3 or 4 albums. Everyone in the band is an incredible musician but they've been focusing too hard on tone, and the strength of the performances themselves have been getting lost. With this album, they apparently spent a week in a shed in the desert with no material planned, and emerged with the album. I think this has had a positive effect because the strength of the music in this album comes from energetic performances, much like their old material, as opposed to tinkering with sounds in the studio.

Edit: okay I've listened to it a few times now and have revised my opinion. It's just like their last few albums - mostly average - a few great tracks but a lot of stuff that doesn't deserve to be released to the public. I really want these guys to take a 5-year hiatus or something

Here's mine. I feel like 2016 was somewhat of a bad year for music, but my perception could be colored because it was a horrible year overall. I'm not the first to say this but it feels like there weren't that many killer albums even though there were lots of great songs. That being said it's probably mostly my fault as I spent a LOT of this year specifically digging through the discographies of David Bowie, Frank Zappa, and Marvin Gaye.
