On the other hand, have you seen the bank their crowdfunding had?

No joke: I thought about auditioning, but I kept putting it off, and whoops! Time has passed. On the plus side, my last shred of dignity is still intact.

Sometimes I wonder about the VAs for hentai and the like - should I feel sorry for them?

Not out of desperation, mind you, but out of sheer curiosity. Plus, you'd only be working on it for two weeks, max.

Honestly pissed I didn't get a callback on that one. My voice is sexy as hell! it's like one of those classic butler limosines made entirely of purple velvet.

I'm going to try and get my demo reel in front of some people at Rooster Teeth, so what should I say in a message that won't make me look weird?

Considering their studio name is a synonym for cockbite, you'd have to try pretty hard to weird them out. I'd just say that you're looking for voice roles, here's your demo reel, if they think they have a role that you'd match well with then they know where to find you, etc.

Do they do a reel submission thing? Or do they go through a casting agency these days?

Bit of a warning, though - crappy bodice rippers and self-insert books kinda turned me off voicing longer titles.

Just checking because I'm not sure how frequently the OP is updated—is the Blue Yeti still the best mic for cheap voice recording? I was hoping for something under $100 but if the difference between great quality and trash is $20 I'm happy to spring for the Yeti.

If there's a better mic with a straight USB connection I haven't found it, most everything else requires another layer of hardware.

I've made my order for new VO equipment! My new mic is an Audio-Technica AT2035 XLR, with an added XLR cable for extra length. My preamp, by suggestion, is the Solid State Logic SSL2 USB Audio Interface. I'm already set for headphone, a pop filter, and recording program (Reaper). By next week, I should be set up once more to return to voice over work. Wish me luck!

I have been super in the dumps during the pandemic and haven't been able to record any auditions or anything because I AM NEVER ALONE in my apartment. The VR video game came back for more lines and I was finally able to put my restored ProTools iMac to use again. Felt nice.

When you say never alone, you don't mean in the VN protagonist way, right?

I mean in the "since COVID, my children and wife are almost always in the house common areas which also include my recording area" way. I did manage to record some VO last week but had to wait until midnight for everyone to be quiet enough to get the recording done.

Hey folks - since I have a shitload of time on my hands right now, I thought I'd start exploring voice acting a little more seriously. I've recorded a handful of things (mostly for work - I work in a media production house, so I've got one foot in the door already) and would love to start getting my foot in the door as a way to make a little extra money. A recent example is here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bphhn2vBPXY (I actually don't like this read very much but we were significantly under the gun.) My question - how much/what kind of legwork should I expect from a V/O producer, and what's a decent vs. a ripoff price for their services? There's a company nearby that will provide scripts, script edits, three coaching sessions, and final edits and consultation for $1,200, which seems like a good enough deal. I am also a terrible judge of this sorta thing, and should probably shop around a little more. I just want to get a baseline idea of what I might be looking at. Tia!

Would you be interested in a gig for corporate VO work for Johnson and Johnson? I'm a producer/editor for J&J and I'm currently casting for a short 1.5-2min HR video to be circulated internally indefinitely. You're exactly what I'm looking for and would love to have a goon on this. Shoot me a PM or email me at mikemartinez @ insideideas dot agency Any others are welcome to send me a message/email with relevant demos, casting women only right now. Thanks!

I'd save the $1,200 and reinvest part of it into some decent audio editing software. I still use what I originally learned on back in radio (Adobe Audition), but I'm sure other goons have good (and more up to date) suggestions as well.

Seconding Audition as I was using it right up until my station decided they didn't want to pay for any more Adobe licenses. Haven't played with pro tools for over 10 years ago but I remember it being as good as the user and the guy I worked with setup EQ settings for every single voice in the building and knew his craft so well, his work was incredible. No idea what a setup for it would be nowadays but at least they moved into plug in boxes rather than massive cards c:
