A couple pages back I mentioned Myougiryu getting his head blown off by a Hakuho elbow. I was watching random videos on youtube and it actually came up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcT5AtFa67k&t=380s I'd recommend watching the whole thing since it's full of impressive Hakuho bouts.

Officer Sandvich posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCqxOzKNFks Goddamn, that was a "right this way, sir" henka. I hope they named the losing robot Kotoshogiku. Those guys have amazing hand-eye coordination to control them like that. e: that other video reminded me that someone had mentioned thinking that Myogiryu hadn't been the same since getting knocked out cold. The KO happened in Sept of 2012, so almost 5 years ago now. Looking at his records, Myogiryu actually spent the next 8 consecutive basho at M2 or higher, then after a so-so year he spent almost all of 2015 in sanyaku. I'd say he recovered fully from that KO. I think Myogiryu is just one of those guys that hit his peak early and has rapidly declined since he turned 30. Fryhtaning fucked around with this message at 02:10 on Jun 21, 2017 |

I think they are AI controlled, that's part of the reason why one robot has arms with paper attached, that can screw with object recognition.

The Banzuke is out. No surprises, and for the first time in a while, none of the Ozeki are Kadoban. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/sumo/rankings/2017-nagoya-basho/ edit: For those who are following Wakaichiro, he's still in Jonidan (4 divisions below the top, so he's several years away at best), promoted up to E26. He was E52 in May. code:

Takakeisho should go against pretty much everyone in the top, and Ura should get a Yok and an Ozeki or something along those lines. Exciting stuff. With no kadobans and nobody even close to an Ozeki run now that Takayasu is promoted, there's not a whole lot of drama we can expect in terms of the ranks until Mitakeumi or Shodai put together a couple of 11-winners. The biggest story to me will be whether or not Hakuho is back to dominating or if Kisenosato is fully healed. Kise went something like 9-6 against Takayasu in training, which is maybe one or two wins off from what I'd expect from a healthy Kisenosato against Takayasu in Takayasu's current form.

If he gets 11 or 12 wins then people will start talking.

Yeah, the last time he won over 10 he was in Juryo, so if he somehow wins 10 again he'll still need to go 13-2 in the next basho against 4 yoks and 3 ozeki. It's rare that someone fits solidly into to S/K ranks, but Tamawashi seems to be right at home there. But as of now, he's not even on the radar as far as people are concerned.

Yeah obviously he's not going for it right now, but I can see it happening in the right circumstances in the next year or so. Nobody would have expected Takayasu to step up this time last year.

I get the feeling that this will end up being a race for second, with Hakuho running away with it and clinching the yusho around day 13. The young wrestlers are good, but I doubt they can match Hakuho's consistency.

Only 2 undefeated in sanyaku, and then the next one is down at M6. Also glad to see Chiyonokuni finally get a win. He put up the most impressive 2-13 I've ever seen at M1 last basho, so he should be tearing it up at M11 instead of just 1-2 so far. Ikioi's about the only other guy I've seen make 2-13 look good.

For Juryo and below the DB torikumi video uploads have been super fast this basho http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Results.aspx?b=201707&d=3 Kaisei changed his mawashi to deep orange or poo colored. Everyone change their mawashi apparently! It is super musty in Nagoya, its been like 85 and 90% humidity every day.

Yeah Nagoya is pretty bad in summer. Part of why I think they should have the July tournament in Sapporo instead

Sapporo would be pretty cool to see. I've always wondered why they don't have any of the basho north of Tokyo, considering quite a few famous rikishi came from the north. Most of the Yoks from the 70s and 80s were from Hokkaido or Aomori. If they can have one in Kyushu ffs they can take one of the three from Tokyo and move it to Sendai or Aomori, if not all the way to Sapporo. Sumo has gained enough popularity that they'll still sell out, and that would help spread the popularity even more. They've got shinkansen all the way up to Hakodate, so access isn't an issue.
