I found this useful for finding the drivers and software for the Saitek x52 joystick. Note this is not the x52 Pro, apparently that matters some of the time.

Now its just into the hell of mapping buttons and profiles. Naturally, right out of the box, the can't tell that I have a throttle rather then a drat slider. Has anyone run into this issue with a x52 throttle? Namely that the game thinks that the slider on the throttle is the throttle rather then the full 'thing'? I am an idiot and deserve to be beaten by wolves. I needed top look at the bottom of the HOTAS key setup page where you can define all the axes for pitch, yaw, roll, power, etc..

If icons are off, I'll get as high as I can, while still being able to see the target and do a 1/2 assed dive bomb, which is just diving at it and releasing as close as possible. I'm usually diving at a 45 degree angle if I'm doing it this way. Just aim your gun-sights a little behind the target and release when you are close. You should be going fast as well so your bomb still follows your path to a certain degree instead of instantly going straight down.

Nothing is working. I'm about to give up with this. My bombs are always hitting behind the target, and sometimes they aren't exploding at all. I have my ju-87 reticle aimed right on top of the target for a couple seconds before releasing the bomb. It never hits.

I wish there was an easy way to practice dive bombing, but I can't find anything that lets me practice dive bombing immediately, that skips the takeoff and long flight to the target.

Is it the Stuvi sight or the regular reflector? Because neither of those are calibrated to send the bombs at your crosshairs. The Stuvi (in the last Ju-87 bomber variant, and the Ju-88) needs to be calibrated with your release altitude, and there's a little horizontal bar that will move up the sight as you dive. When the buzzer sounds, you drop your bombs and they will hit whatever was beneath the centre of that horizontal bar at time of release. The bar stops moving once your dive stabilizes, so it's not as hard to aim as it sounds, you just have to start rather high.

The regular reflector sight (in all earlier Ju-87 variants) has jack all to do with your bombs, and is actually tuned to your forward guns. If your bombs are consistently hitting behind the target, try aiming a little lower, and learn where in the sight your target needs to be for a good hit. Note that some reflector sights on other planes have additional horizontal ticks above and below centre designed to help with dive and shallow bombing, but without a manual the only way to learn to use them is to pay attention.

No trains as the map I picked didn't have any railroads, but there are a shitload of tanks to kill. Plus waves of 6 interceptors coming in at 5 minute intervals for over an hour. It turned into an airfield defense mission after we spent an hour trying to take off under a trio of tigers and a maus murdering us on the ramp before we could move. That one was hindered because of the Zero's that were just way better than our escort fighters preventing us from effectively engaging the tanks. Now they're G-50s, pre-war Italian fighters. Will be adding in another wave or two of tanks as well since they run out around 40 minutes in.

In other words, the mission is much more fun now.

I also just added a bunch of things to the map including:
More than doubling the number of enemy fighters, halving the time between fighter waves, and adding in better fighters for the last few waves.
Bombers!
Nearly doubling the number of attacking vehicles and escort AA.
Airfield lights!

If anyone has any more suggestions I am more than willing to implement anything that would make it more fun.

If you guys want to take a crack at it to test it out and whatnot, here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/?4t4a02quicco49z

Why are the tanks the size of your pilot? The scale seems totally off even when you're like 5 feet off of the deck.

Keep in mind the IL2 is a pretty drat big plane. So when you see those vehicles in relation to the plane (like when you're flying 5 feet off the ground) it kind of distorts your perspective on the size of things. If you look at the pilot in the cockpit compared to the cars from the outside view it looks completely normal.

Try a quick mission with the target set to armor and your altitude set as needed. You may need to experiment with the different quick mission maps to see which you like best.

Download these missions and drop them into your net/coop directory. Inside the coop directory I'd make a new folder called Customs or something.

You'll be airstarting as a Stuka and attempting to dive bomb a battleship trying to make its way through a German occupied fjord. It's good practice for dive bombing, and you'll be over the target in about a minute.

The other thing you can do is make a custom game with just yourself. To practice dive bombing I would fly on Croatia or Okinawa and hit bridges. No enemy units to worry about, and you can start yourself at 12,000ft.

The Stuvi is always active in this game, there's nothing to do to turn it on or anything. You can actually see the on/off switch on the left hand side of the sight, accompanied by the text "stuvi ist ein" indicating that the sight is turned on; it's just part of the model though, and isn't functional.

From the Il-2 Aircraft Guide:

quote:

The Stuka D-5 is equipped with the Stuvi dive sight. Before the dive in your Ju-87D-5 you must set your dive airspeed (true) by buttons “Increase Sight Velocity” and “Decrease Sight Velocity” and bomb drop altitude by buttons “Increase Sight Altitude” and “Decrease Sight Altitude”. When the plane enters the dive you must place the crosshairs onto your target and keep it there. When the plane reaches the preset altitude the warning horn will sound. The pilot should drop the bombs at this point, after which point the plane will be automatically leveled off.

The crosshairs here refers to the moving set I mentioned in my last post, just for reference.

e/ vv It HAS to be the Ju-87D-5, the other variants only have a regular gunsight. I went through a few edits of this post and mentioned it in one of them, I must have edited it out and forgotten about it, sorry.

e2/ The Stuvi sight is this hugeass black thing:

the little >--< mark moves up and down based on your dive angle and speed. If you don't have a big black box with a reflector hanging underneath, you haven't got a Stuvi! (again, sorry for not being more clear about this)

This is very confusing. I have been pressing shift-f1, I can adjust bomb drop altitude, but not the velocity. I never hear a warning horn, and I dont see a moving horizontal bar. I am piloting the German dive bomber, Ju-87. What on earth am I missing?

Not my screenshot, but yes, slightly. You can actually see the bottom of the Vne sticker peeking out from under the cockpit bar, just above the speedo, telling you not to go above 600kph in a dive. That guy is probably just getting some shakes though, since he seems to be in a relatively shallow dive and not maneuvering too hard; if he was in a 90 degree dive he'd be hosed.

Also his throttle is non-zero in an attack run, as you can tell from the manifold pressure, another general do-not; given that and prop speed, it actually looks like he's got his throttle pegged at max, so yeah he really should be breaking up any second now, unless he's flying with low realism. I literally only posted that pic as the first clear GIS result I could find of what the Stuvi sight looks like in game.

So the first week or so has been awesome with lots of new and old people showing up to play games.

We need to keep it up! The thing is, doing NOTHING but IL-2 every night leads to burnout. Take a look at the OP, there's a list of games that most/all of us have. Get in IRC, get in mumble and tell people to STFU and come play games.

Also, we need more people to take the initiative and host. Feel like flying, announce it in IRC, get in mumble and throw up a server.

Here's something to get you started. This is the list of missions we have so far that we enjoy. There's both modified dogfight maps and MDS missions. The 2 most popular are the Guadacanal MDS in my folder and the HE111 Intercept mission by BreakfastMachine.

Download this and get flying.

The PS3 eyecam is freaking amazing with it's refresh rate and you don't even have to remove the IR Filter to use a freetrack setup. The picture is crystal clear and you can get rates up to 120fps if you want. The only problem is that the drivers to get it to work with freetrack are a little hard to track down and the latest set I was using would cause IL-2 multiplayer to freeze my PC, so bad it required a physical reboot. Works perfectly in single player (as smooth as using the mouse) but multiplayer, crash!

When I get the time I'm going to try and track down the appropriate drivers and see if I can get it up and running for those who are interested in a good (and cheap) webcam alternative. Also it might just be a hardware conflict on my part, so don't let it deter you if you want to pick one up. Once you get freetrack working and tweaked to your preferences, it's just as good as TrackIR.

Lower your prop pitch as well if you're just cruising. Slows down the propeller instead of having it spin at 9001 RPM non stop and therefore leads to less heat!

I've got a new MDS up to the stage where I need people to help me test it, if you feel like flying ping me on irc and I'll throw it up. Can't just leave it up since it's (for now) a bomber intercept type rather than a "lets punk unwitting stationary ground targets" thing.

Basic gist is we're flying late war Japanese interceptors (or Zeros if we crash all the best planes) to beat the crap out of Hellcats and Corsairs. I'm planning on adding more types of enemy aircraft later, but I want to make sure the mission is going in the right direction first, because putting in an hour's worth of enemies to fight only to find that I need to change the timing/difficulty on all of them would completely sap my will to try.

Right now it only lasts about 15-20 minutes, so if you feel like having a go just say so.
