Monday/Tuesday is my best time, as I am off during those days.

I am available in the mornings every other day, since I am just getting off work. Might be able to host some co-op missions or something for European/morning goons.

If you have the GoG version and have downloaded it recently it is already patched up to 4.10

Otherwise you can get 4.10 from here, though you'll need to make an account. If you enjoy IL-2 at all you should make an account there regardless, because it has a lot of user made missions and skins and other cool poo poo.

Hmm. Was your game modded before you installed the 4.11 patch? You'll probably have to start fresh with a clean install. Otherwise, make sure you patched in order based on whatever stock version you have. Unfortunately the patches are incremental.

Those are the only ways I can think that might be causing your game to crash on load.

I'll be looking to shoot planes with goons in the future!

I use to host a torrent that had all the patches up to 4.10 or something like that, but that was on my old computer and I am pretty sure I forgot to carry it over. I'll see what I can do, though. I know some people got some use out of it.

Also: The turn out was awesome last night and the MDS maps were fun, as they always are. It's good to see old and new showing up.

You can type messages in IL-2 but the system is horrible.

Even if you don't have a mic you should connect to Mumble when there is a game just so you can at least hear what's going on.

Hartmann often came back to his airfield with damage sustained from the aircraft he shot down flinging debris into his aircraft. He said that most of the aircraft he shot down didn't know he was there until it was too late (ie. rounds impacting against their airframe).

Here is his final interview for those that might be interested. Yeah, I know the website is a flashback from the early 90's, just deal with it and read his story.

I'm having trouble being impressed by Lowengrin's DCG. As a dive bomber, every mission it sends me on either 1) fails before I can get off the runway, or 2) sends me into enemy territory with no escort.

Is this normal? I don't want the DCG to generate suicide missions every single time.

You have to circle the runway a couple of times as a bomber and wait for your escort to show up/take off. If you just take off and head to your objective you'll leave your escort in the dust and you'll be easy pickings. Is the game saying you failed before you take off or that you succeeded? Because there's an option in the Difficulty settings of the game that will make it so the game won't give you an instant success before you even leave the runway.

Nothing is working. I'm about to give up with this. My bombs are always hitting behind the target, and sometimes they aren't exploding at all. I have my ju-87 reticle aimed right on top of the target for a couple seconds before releasing the bomb. It never hits.

I wish there was an easy way to practice dive bombing, but I can't find anything that lets me practice dive bombing immediately, that skips the takeoff and long flight to the target.

Download these missions and drop them into your net/coop directory. Inside the coop directory I'd make a new folder called Customs or something.

You'll be airstarting as a Stuka and attempting to dive bomb a battleship trying to make its way through a German occupied fjord. It's good practice for dive bombing, and you'll be over the target in about a minute.

Looking at the logs it appears you don't have the most recent version of Mumble. I believe they made a small (but required) update here not too long ago and that might be what is causing you to disconnect.

If not I'll look into it more after work.

The AI is programmed to be perfect at engine management, unfortunately.

The best bit of advice for playing single player is setting your Rank as the highest it can be (bottom of the drop down list) before you start a campaign. That way you will be flight leader and your wingmen will follow you and keep speed with you. The campaigns can be pretty fun if you check out Lowengrin's DCG, read EvilJoven's second post in the thread about how to get that set up nicely.

1946 gives you the whole package. If you are worried about copy protection you can purchase the game from Good Old Games, though honestly I don't really know what you are talking about as I don't think there was anything like Starforce or anything similar bundled with any version of IL2.

DeathSandwich posted:

After playing for a bit tonight, I feel like I'm starting to get a hang of some of the basics after getting my control scheme ironed out. I'm to the point that I can reliably take off at least in the simple engine mode while flying an IL-2. While I was able to get the plane off the ground and where I needed to bomb during the first IL-2 mission, the counter-fighter sortie rocked my poo poo because I am apparently either a poo poo dogfighter or trying to dogfight in a plane that really shouldn't.

After that, I tried my hand at a LaGG 3rd and I'm about 50/50 on actually moving vs bursting into flames on the runway. Perhaps I need more practice with this.

On my throttle stick, I've got 3 dials that I can bind to plane functions, I've got one set to prop pitch, one to elevator pitch, and one to fuel mixture. I wanted to try and get my radiator bound on the stick but I don't think I'm going to be able to stick it in anywhere. How do you guys usually bind it, and exactly what is the proper way to set your radiator while in flight so that I don't explode have a mishap.

Here's a great list of tutorials on some of the basics

Open radiator full for take off and cruisin'. Once you're in a combat zone close it or set it to automatic so bullets and flak debris don't get into your engine and damage it. An open radiator also produces drag which is bad when you're trying to keep energy in a dogfight. The maps have an affect on overheating too because of the environment temperature, so if you're in snowed out Stalingrad you can get away with keeping it closed or in one of the lower positions while flying, whereas if you're in the desert you'd want to keep it full open or in one of the higher positions.

Here's a rundown on the complex engine management in the game, keep in mind that's an old article from 2007 but it gives you a good idea of what everything does. Every plane is a bit different and some planes don't have all these systems to manage, so it takes some experimentation.

Edit to add: There are two ways to bind the radiator, you can bind it to an axis on the HOTAS or you can bind it to a single button 'Cowl or Armor Flaps' in the Control pane. I just use the single button approach because I don't have a fancy setup. If you feel like you're running out of space then just binding it to that single button might be a good option for you.

Yeah, I would go with GOG even if it was still on Steam normally. Whenever there is an update they usually patch it and update the download within a week or two of it hitting.

Contrast to Steam: it took them a long rear end time to update the game and that was probably only due to Rise of Flight coming out before they pulled it.

I wanna fly planes and get shot down like the good old days.

Also, as EvilJoven has said the more people willing to host the better. It's generally really easy to host and most people can connect and fly without there being noticeable lag, so don't sweat it if you have a lovely connection. I was hosting on a bad DSL connection and never mentioned it to anyone and as far as I know no one ever complained about lag.

I just hope they make significant improvements to the engine so there can be an increase in ground targets.

There's barely anything to bomb or look at on the ground in Rise of Flight because they can't have that many objects on the screen at once.

Edited: Try deleting Pacific1942_UM from your DCG folder and Backup folder.

Go into your IL2 Missions/Campaign folder and go into each country folder and delete any 'DCG' folder present. Also delete any folder in these country folders that have 'DGen_' in the name.

After all that try generating a new campaign in DCG.
