I kept thinking, "Am I being unfair to the game?", but then I was watching part of Carcinogen's no-damage run, and he points out in his commentary that enemies like the Hunters and Leech Zombies aren't coded the best. The Hunters apparently have a bug where they can have 0 health (:v:), but unless they take damage during a certain animation or something they won't die. I also watched part of a run by Bawkbasoup, and while I only saw the first twenty minutes of it or so, he didn't really seem keen on the game either.

Sounds like I really made the right choice in giving up and replaying REmake2 (with a mod that plays the original OST with the new sound effects).

Max Wilco posted:

It's weird, because the contemporary reviews held the game in pretty high regard (8s and 9s from various outlets). Reviews for the HD version are more in the 'average' category

I sort of wonder if it would have done better as an N64 title, provided they could have fit it on a cart.

We're the reviews mostly people saying "at least it's not as bad as Gunsurvivor"?

I can't imagine the game looking worse but having all of the poor design decisions in place would be an improvement.

Max Wilco posted:

I haven't watched that video yet, but I watched the Mega Man X7 video, and Dino Crisis 3 was brought up along with, as both games were done by Capcom Production Studio 3.

As it turns out, RE0 was also done by Production Studio 3, so maybe that's why RE0 is the way it is.

Looking at a list of their games, it seems like Studio 3 was more like the experimental, weird one; they also produced stuff like Clock Tower 3, Haunting Ground, Mega Man X: Command Mission and the Xtreme GBC titles, plus the Resident Evil Survivor series. I guess high highs and low lows makes sense when everything you make is really bizarre or out-of-the-mold for its series.

Nearing the end of my Revelations 2 replay and it's definitely been a good ride. Moment to moment gameplay is probably The most fun since RE4. The coop pair system is a success and I can definitely see how much fun it would be to yell at your friends to shine the flashlight, but it also works really well solo. I really know why more games don't crib from this, especially with the damage scaling for the uncontrolled person. They never felt like a real liability.

I also wish Capcom brought back some of the more fun weapon enhancements. Most of them are boring but some are really fun like the mega buster charge upgrade or the one that dumps your entire magazine in one go.

And I managed to kill the final boss with a brick to the dome.

They should make a Mercenaries game with a single-player campaign where you play HUNK, playing through all the poo poo he's been through over the course of the series and some new stuff to explain where he's been. The arenas are all places where HUNK has killed people.

Maybe they can even explain why he's a loyal employee for the most evil and crazy people on Earth. The only thing we don't need is some convoluted backstory where he was genetically engineered and became a PhD and Navy SEAL when he was 12.

I actually may have posted this before but Rev2 is the absolutely perfect game to play with your mom who doesn't play games on Halloween. My mother loves my let's play of Dead Space and said she wanted to do something like the co-op videos for that playthrough, and Revelations 2 ended up being the perfect candidate. She is not at all a gamer and has the reaction time of a turtle, the most intense game she plays is solitaire with a turn limit. But playing as Moira she learned real quick how to walk around with one stick and point the flashlight at zombies with the other. Take a second to shoot the enemies, shut up for the cutscenes like it's a movie, boom. Go hang out with your mom.

Then I let her be Barry and dropped the difficulty further down to Casual for some sweet catharsis :unsmigghh:

edit: And in fact that's the perfect role switch, it almost seems intentional to me. Claire gets hardly any ammo and her enemies move so fast that Moira basically needs to slow them down on higher difficulties. Barry gets like 3 guns and still starts off shooting dessicated zombies that are so lame and slow they literally don't attack they just fall over and stumble onto you to damage you.

That's one thing I'll definitely dock the campaign for. The skill system is largely pointless but also doesn't let you know you really want to rush the flashlight, crowbar and bricks as soon as possible because those skills take the experience of second player from unfun to stunting on monsters and bosses with beatings.

Ideally the max level should've been the base and upgrades gave you new moves or something.

Well, I finally finished RE0.

Was surprised to get a B rank, though had I shaved the hour off, I'd have gotten the sub-machine gun.

Making the final boss basically an escort mission is some BS, especially if it was the case where you were just plain out of ammo. You get some ammo on the elevator before, but you have to burn it immediately to get into the second phase. and then it's a matter of getting the Leach Queen to go after you (Billy) instead of Rebecca. Luckily I had enough pistol ammo, though it took three tries before I got a successful run. You can't have Rebecca heal when she's opening the valves, so you have to try and gauge when the second phase is going to start, and heal her then.

I know it's stupid to get irate about the plot of RE, but it doesn't really add anything. It's like, "Oh Wesker and Birkin killed their mentor, but then he became a leech man, and he leaked the T-Virus in the mansion." I thought maybe there were going to do more with the relationship between Rebecca and Billy, but it just kind of gets dropped after Billy gives his backstory.

I briefly tried out the bonus modes. Leech Hunter didn't sound like much fun, and unsurprisingly, it was not. I only got enough charms for an E rank and the extra machine-gun clip, but since I didn't unlock the machine-gun, it's useless. Plus, I think you need to have the machine gun unlocked, because the enemies you encounter in a lot of the rooms in Leech Hunter mode are not things you can fight with just the default handgun. I tried going to the room where you find the shotgun, and I go, "Oh, what's this? Three hunters? Well gently caress you, too, game."

Wesker Mode seems like it might be fun, since you have that psy-blast move, which seems to obliterate zombies (at least the one zombie I tried i on). The running move doesn't seem all that useful, though I instantly forgot the new controls for it after starting, so maybe there's another component to it.

Regardless, I've complained about RE0 enough as it is, so I'm going to uninstall it and start downloading RE4.

Is there anything I should know about RE4 going into it? I'm playing the Steam version, so I don't know if it needs a patch or mod or something.

There’s an option in the controls somewhere to turn on 1:1 mouse movement. Using the other option means there’s a weird dead zone and sluggish crosshair movement because something-something emulating a controller.

Other than that let us know whether you chose the Red9 or the Blacktail.

Oh yeah, I was wondering if I should play with a controller or with a mouse. I was thinking mouse, since I'm used to mouse aiming, but I was wondering how the game would handle it, so knowing that helps. What I think worries me is how the QTEs are mapped to the keyboard, which is why I wondered if a controller would be better.

I think back when I first tried playing RE4 on the Wii, I believe went with the Red9, but I don't recall why. I don't have the best recollection of RE4 (I never finished it), but when I get to the point where I get the choice, I'll post about it.

-

Also, one thing I meant to ask when I finished RE0. Was there a reason that Rebecca was more-or-less forgotten about? It occurred to me that Rebecca was the one character who didn't get an epilogue in RE3, and the only other story-related thing she appears in after RE0 (that doesn't seem to be just a playable character in an arcade mode/mini-game) is the Vendetta movie (and I guess the stage show, according to the RE wiki.)

The weird thing in RE0 is that I don't think the villain ever actually interacts with Rebecca and Billy in a meaningful way. Like, I'm pretty sure Survivor or Dead Aim had more protagonist/villain interaction than in 0.

- Always be looking up trees for bird's nests to shoot.
- Upgrading your gun's ammo capacity gives you a free ammo refill
- Examine your treasure to see if it can be combined with anything before selling it off
- Shooting mooks on the head or shin stuns them and you can run forward to do a special melee move
- There's folks who made an HD texture mod to make the game look better

I think the reason is that Rebecca was just sensible enough to not spend her entire life fighting the undead and instead chose to pursue a career as a medical researcher and professor. Considering how we've seen Chris getting more and more worn down as the series goes on, I can't say I blame Rebecca for her decision.

The fun thing about the musical stage play is that it took place before RE6, so you got Chris and Piers showing up to help put down the virus outbreak with their sick dance moves. It also has a flashback section showing Chris and Rebecca teaming up during the events of RE1. :allears:

Chambers was kind of a promotional gimmick, modeled after the J-Pop star who was the game's spokesman in Japan. Shinji Mikami loathes the character and only included her for commercial reasons. A shy, submissive 18-year-old girl with a sexy nurse costume is not his idea of a good female protagonist.

I always go with the Red9. The pistol is the go-to weapon, and you should be going for headshots and kicks. Accuracy and damage trumps burning ammo as fast as possible. If you want to spray ammo, make the TMP your primary weapon.

Ethan is far more polite than me. After the prayer, I would have asked, "So what religion are you guys?"

From what I can tell of Romanian, Dimitrescu is pronounced "dim-ee-tresk-oo", not "dom-ee-tresk". The latter way does sound cool, though.

When Lady Dimitrescu is chasing you through the halls, she ignores pistol bullets. A shot to the head with a sniper or shotgun will stagger her briefly: she has an animation where she frowns and adjusts her hat, which is incredibly badass.

She has a kill animation where she cuts your head off, and you see your POV flying though the air, then land, while you see your body crumple to the ground with blood spurting out the neckhole.

Ethan briefly losing his right hand with no warning made me crack up.
