It is entirely possible that Chris just likes Jill as a partner and not as a love interest. It would be backed up by his other partnerships with female characters which all seem to boil down to him flat-out not seeing his coworker as a romantic interest. The silly deleted DLC thing would seem to back up the idea they're just friends.

To be honest I kind of like that Resident Evil can actually have a male and female character team up without them being five seconds away from making out at all times.

On another note, I was actually quite surprised at how critical Chris is of America. It's said in a little throwaway line at the beginning of Resident Evil 5, but it's rare that you get games that are critical of America and capitalism.

Capcom made up for it though, half of RE6 is "it's not America's fault for every thing"

It is refreshing to have male-female friendships in a game.

Now that I think about it, the Resident Evil games are weirdly chaste, sexy outfits and monster breasts aside. Everybody is married to their jobs as special forces/comical supervillains (except Barry who is married to his wife, his job, and his giant handgun)

But really, my greatest disappointment in the series is that the RE4 shopkeeper was replaced by plain shopping menus. I was hoping you'd turn a corner in Africa and WHAM GOT SOME NICE STUFF ON SALE, STRANGER

What the gently caress is up with this scagdead fight? It's bad enough that they gave the drat thing tons of health but then they flood the arena with enemies and it has pretty much made the gameplay quite annoying trying to fight him and the respawning legions of enemies that flood into this part.

Really...? You should play more Japanese games and particularly RPGs.

On another note. Unless you play one of those America, gently caress Yeah! games, they almost never mention a government's supremacy and horrors that Socialism and Communism brings to countries. Devs go out of their way to avoid criticizing China.

Yo can I just say that after like a million games if no serious swearing that Chris calling someone a bitch like 30 times was really jarring? I mean he's the most well meaning RE protagonist and hearing say bitch and poo poo constantly was weird.

Do you have the sniper yet? If not go get it. It's at the top of the large foyer where the humongous clock is. In the solarium.

And yes that boss fight is pure poo poo. I ended up using the window trick. Basically, jump through the window across from the room he bursts out whenever he gets near. Ironically, fighting scagdead with no other enemies near makes them piss-easy.

Yeah, I have the rifle. I was trying to just kill him by exploiting him by jumping back through the window each time he got close, but eventually the oozes make their way near you and gently caress everything up.

Did you put all your best upgrades on the rifle or the shotgun?

I put damage mods on the rifle and the rest I put on the pistol. I found the shotgun to be pretty useless for some reason.

Not sure if it's the same line, but if you wait around a long time in the opening area of RE5 (before you meet the merchant guy who gives you your guns), Chris and Sheva start talking about America in general. Sheva asks Chris if he'd rather be back in the States, and Chris responds that America might have its own dark side, with the intense competitive spirit of capitalism causing a zero sum state of affairs where one person moving ahead means other people get left behind.

The conversation ends with Sheva telling Chris he doesn't sound like a typical American, and Chris saying there's at least one good thing about America: its incredible diversity of opinion. I've always thought it was a really weird idea to make that a hidden conversation when most people will just rush forward to continue the game, but yeah, he's anything but a gun-ho American.

I beat it right after I posted that. I felt like it was more luck than any kind of skill though. I somehow managed to pull off a fully charged melee attack and nail a direct headshot on him with the rifle with all the upgrades. I used the shotgun for shooting the oozes.

That discussion is something a Japanese company would make, especially the diversity of opinion (said tongue-in-cheek). Sounds so out of character for Chris, who spends all his time fighting monsters who are infesting the world, to be so critical of the US. Did he get betrayed by his homeland in another game?

Pre-RE4, his characterization was basically "pursues Umbrella, gets dick for help from anyone," and I think there's some mention in a file in RE5 that the BSAA is really unpopular in the U.S. due to how extensively Umbrella had put its claws into the American government and society.

There are a lot of little facets in the larger RE plot that I'd like to see someone with some writing chops take a crack at, and one of them is the ramifications of a huge corporation that turns out to be legitimately, unequivocally evil. The earlier games made it pretty clear that Umbrella was as inescapable as Proctor and Gamble or Kraft, so if nothing else, that's a shitload of lost jobs, disappearing products, and a huge ensuing political power vacuum.

I don't know, I think of it more like Chris does in-game, that he's a realist. It's not so much that he was betrayed, just that he's old enough to look at things as objectively as he can.

I do agree it's pretty out of character for him, but you could probably explain it as Chris knows the government's involvement with Umbrella and Raccoon and the fact they still haven't come out with the truth is what's bugging him. Still, least he has some character in the latest games.

But then the sequel would retcon it all. Umbrella was your average evil medical company that wants profits.

Well raid mode, it's been fun but one you started throwing enemies at me that require 20+ shotgun blasts point-blank to kill I lost all interest. And this was with a "short range+" Level 20 Drake.

It's a shame really. Chasm was really fun but trench is such an unholy grind. I also had a big laugh at the "recommended" level. Half the time enemies are 5+ levels higher than the recommended. It was a hell of a surprise when my level 20 character ran into Terragrigia 1 and all the hunters were 25.

Different enemies have different weaknesses. Just going "my shotgun is good" isn't the most effective way to kill enemies. Certain weapons are flat-out more or less effective against certain enemy types and hitting weaknesses is a pretty big thing,

Yeah, the shotgun is not the best weapon for hunters. The rifle and stun/physical hits are the way to go with them.

Though if you can stack a few hunters together, stabbing them four or five times and then blasting them with another shotgun blast to reset their down state can be pretty efficient.

True. Shotguns seem fairly weak until you get Infighter + Damage( +maybe Crit?) on them, and then fire point-blank at weak points. I remember that being fairly effective in the 3DS version.

Yeah, that's what I normally do. Wait for one to jump then just melee them all to death.

I only ever use shotguns against hunters because of how effective they are. You just need to wait until they are right in your face before firing. If all pellets hit the hunters face you can easily get around 2000-4000 worth of damage depending on shotgun and mods.

If you catch one at the right point in its charge with a few pistol or assault rifle hits, it flips over and ends up in position for a charged melee attack. I find that more efficient than a shotgun most of the time.

blackguy32 posted:

Since the campaign vomits handgun ammunition at you, I usually keep the M92F around with +damage, +stopping, and +daze. For the shotgun, I prefer +fire rate and a longer magazine. In the endgame, against the last two bosses, I switch my best damage mods over to the machine gun and shotgun.

The rifle usually isn't worth tricking out for its own sake, but once it shows up there's ammunition for it everywhere, so it's a shame not to use it.

Always keep a rifle on you for the campaign as ammo is everywhere and, if you're accurate enough, almost match damage with a magnum and since it has piercing you can kill multiple enemies in one shot. Make sure to put any damage+ mods on too.

For pistol and shotty I just put whatever felt good. By the time I got to the final boss I pretty much broke the game because the sniper destroyed everything if I got a head shot.
