I think the idea for on-disc DLC was that so people who haven't bought the downloadable characters could still play with people who are using them, without having to download large mandatory patches every time a new character comes out, or fragmenting the user base. Resident Evil 5's versus mode was just awful, because there was no reason for it to be blocked off in the first place, when it's already there on the disc.

Wandle Cax posted:It wasn't already on the disc it's just constructed from assets already on the disc. I've read that the patch was just a few kilobytes, and may have just unlocked the option to play versus mode. I wish Microsoft would relax it's restrictions on patches, because having file size limits and a $10,000 cost for multiple patches hasn't stopped buggy games from being released, and just prevents them from being fixed at all. Alone in the Dark was notoriously broken at launch, but had many improvements and fixes for the delayed PS3 version. The overall size of the patch required to bring the 360 version up to that quality was too large, so it remains broken.

The Dark Id posted:I could have sworn I read the game played out exactly like that. Chris, Leon, and Jake have their own storyline and everyone meets up for a big ol' clusterfuck final chapter. By that point in the story you'll have all the chaos emeralds, so Chris, Leon, and Jake can all fight the final boss together in their super forms.

poptart_fairy posted:Man, I'd forgotten how just well done Resident Evil 4 is. The game increases its stranglehold on you at a gradual but manageable pace, you get a controllable influx of new weapons and items without feeling overwhelmed or started, the difficulty jumps up in a predictable but nonetheless challenge manner, etc etc. This is why I spent so many hours on my Gamecube version. I just finished my second playthrough a few days ago, and I couldn't agree more. When you look back on your experience, you realise just how varied and fun it was. Some people complain about escorting Ashley, but I'd guess that about 15-20% of the game is spent with her, most of it in the first half of the game. I'd love a remake that's just an HD texture pack, a new control scheme and a co-op mode. Sorta like how they added co-op to Ada's story in RE6, where the 2nd character isn't reflected in cutscenes, but you'd be able to choose whatever character you wanted, like Luis or Ada.

Sylphid posted:Just your second playthrough? I've done like 20 runs of the game. If there's one thing about RE4 that will always be true, is that it's endlessly replayable. Challenge runs, super weapon runs for fun, or just a fun playthrough like I completed a few days ago. My first time was with the Wii version, and I just beat the PS3 one. While I'm trying to soldier through Leon's campaign in RE6 right now, he just doesn't have the charm he used to. I also played through Separate Ways and Assignment Ada, which were both fun. I'd like to go and do a professional mode run with all the cool stuff I unlocked, too. Len posted:This would be fun as hell but people would bitch about "forced co-op" just like they did in this thread when they gave Ada the optional co-op guy. I haven't tried it myself, but doesn't the agent partner only show up if you're playing co-op? It's not exactly forced, and it means that if you're playing with someone else, you don't have to play separately for a good portion of the game while each of you completes Ada's story.

I remember they released a very unfinished build in order to quell a leak, but I heard something about them having since released a more updated version. Anyone got the skinny on that? They'll have updates on the MrBZork channel. This bonus feature they're putting in is the coolest loving thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ILZULpEDYM

Scalding Coffee posted:Krauser's knife is the source of his strength. Leon got whupped until the knife switch and then the last time you fight Krauser as Leon, he defeats him thoroughly so that Ada can finish him off. You can absolutely wreck Krauser with your own knife in the proper battle, despite him having a shield made of knives.

It's a shame Capcom never ported the Gold version to PC, since that has a lot of extra content. They also never bothered to put Move controls in the PS3 port of Resident Evil 4

TechnoSyndrome posted:The Wii port supports progressive scan, is on one disk instead of two and supports the GameCube controller. It's a better version in all ways except for maybe if you have a GameCube component cable, because the GameCube component cable puts out a sharper image than the Wii component cable, but it's still going to be interlaced. I think the Gamecube supports 480p, but the problem is that the game forces 16:9 letterboxing, so the game is only rendered at 640x360. The Wii version supports proper widescreen, so it's higher resolution and you won't need to set your TV to crop the image.

ethanol posted:yeah I was never on the RE4 bandwagon. no fixed camera, no tank controls, and the gameplay is aging much worse than the older RE games. Technically the section where you played as Ashley used fixed camera angles in the Japanese version There was also a glitch where you could stun a cult member by slamming a door open on them, which would allow you to suplex them. Also, I cannot agree with your point about it ageing worse than the older games. It's simply a different genre, and excels at what it set out to be. It's like hating Symphony of the Night for not being a regular platformer.

Anonymous Robot posted:How is the RE4 HD PC port? The screenshots make the lighting engine look terrible. It's the only version that runs at 60 fps, although the old PC version might have done as well, but it used the PS2's horribly compressed pre-rendered cutscenes. Whatever cheap developer they hired for that and Devil May Cry 3 probably only had experience porting PS2 games to PC, and not Gamecube ones. I've heard that the mouselook isn't great, but it's still loads of fun shooting sickles out of the air and dynamite in people's hands with a controller.

Honest Thief posted:Oh? Really? I turned it off because I couldn't skip the whole dumb intro with Leon, might as well endure it. The worst thing for me is that it definitely isn't the same goofy, charming Leon from Resident Evil 4. Sure, the combat is still over-the-top, but it works even better if the character isn't so serious all the time, and makes one-liners and cheesy comebacks to the villains. Chris and Sheva were never that interesting in RE5 either, just staring blankly at the villains while they describe their terrible plans, and constantly reminding each other how great it is to be partners.

BiggerBoat posted:Just chiming in to post that I started NG+ on Evil Within 2 and want to recommend that game to fans of the RE series. Skip the first one. The first Evil Within is great too, both of them are absolutely worth playing. I'm doing a Nightmare run on PS5 and am at the last chapter. To get the platinum I'll have to do a speedrun on Casual followed by an Akumu run. It can be very frustrating though. You have no invincibility frames and enemies have priority over everything you can do. This can lead to being grabbed and killed when you've already dropped a match or when you're currently swinging an axe at their head. Shiroc posted:There are full on Gears of War rooms full of waist high blocks. Even if you can get away with not using it depending on your weapons/skill in the game, it is the clear intent and having tons of regular guys with AKs is a marked shift from even the rest of the game up to that point. RE4 only had guys with guns as the chaingun miniboss guys. I don't even mind the idea of fighting enemies with guns in Resident Evil, but if you're going to make an action game at least make it control like one. The control scheme designed for fighting villagers with farming equipment doesn't work when enemies have rapid-fire hitscan weapons. In RE5 you do kinda have the ability to dodge attacks. It's your character slowly bending down to pick up an item.

CJacobs posted:The Evil Within 1 is really unforgiving difficulty wise so I'd legit say to play it on Easy because it's a Shinji Mikami as hell Shinji Mikami game and that means you should absolutely play it. You honestly won't miss out on anything making the game harder unless you like the struggle. It's got that same sort of victorian gothic grindhouse vibe as 7, teleporting ethereal gribbly jerk antagonist and chainsaw dueling and all. The Evil Within's normal difficulty is still ridiculously hard at times so you'd have a much smoother time on easy. I put the game down several times on my first playthrough but I still came back to it, and that struggle was why it stayed so memorable for me. The awful framerate drops are solved on the PS5 but the aiming is still atrocious and is responsible for a lot of my deaths. I have the sensitivity up to maximum because the camera rotates incredibly slowly otherwise, but it makes aiming with the rifle impossible because it'll jump between aiming 1 metre left of the enemy to 1 metre right of them. Even aiming with the revolver is frustrating because not only does the reticule sway, the bullets don't even fire where you're aiming. Most games only pick one or the other. At least you can fix the latter by upgrading the revolver, and maxing out the headshot chance too makes it still very useful in the late game.
