Is Goodreads frequently borderline-unusably slow for anyone else lately? I saw what looked like a similar issue a page or two back, but I saw it identified as a Scandinavian issue (I'm on the east coast of the U.S.) and a DNS issue (makes no sense whatsoever, name resolution is working fine). Everything else seems to be hunky-dory connection-wise.

It's been slow for me, but not unusably so.

Their servers are really unreliable, and tend to have issues every month or so.

I'm browsing through Goodreads this morning and came across this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21953652-land-of-the-free 547 out of 551 reviews are 5-stars. Seriously? If you are going to rig your reviews, can you do it a little less obviously?

They do have good Giveaways, but sometimes it's hard to find them above the noise of self-published erotic supernatural teen fic. I just got Detained and Deported: Stories of Immigrant Families Under Fire, which is pretty good so far, though very depressing.

Most of the Goodreads features and functions people talk about itt I've never come across and I've actually sought some of them out. Does Goodreads have a poo poo interface or am I just terrible at using the site?

Historical Fiction is my crack, and I haven't noticed as much bandwagoning in Goodreads' HF circle as I have in, say, YA circles. I'm not sure if the age of the target audience has much to do with it. I know of a A LOT of adults, myself included, who enjoy YA.

Goodreads wants you to read bad books. Do you know how bad a book has to be for it's Goodreads review to dip below 3.6? Or even 3.4? Especially for a book with more than a thousand reviews on a site where the average reviewer won't give a book less than a 4 star review?

I do love seeing the variety of books everyone reads. Also I'm sorry if one of my reviews has convinced anyone to read something that actually isn't that great. I was raised on a steady stream of Star Trek paperbacks so my perspective on what makes a good book is skewed a bit. 8one6 fucked around with this message at 06:06 on Apr 8, 2015 |

I have like 170 Goodreads friends now (not boasting) from here, Reddit and my blog, and it's great to log in and see an ever-updating feed of reviews and updates from people with mostly great taste. I really wish Goodreads had a smart recommendation engine based on your friends list though. Something like "Show me books that at least 5 of my friends gave four or five stars". Anyway here I am again in case anyone else wants to friend me: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1871737-tom — I read SF/F, horror, LGBT fiction, historical fiction & nonfiction, science books, and books about film making.
