Here's a quick one hour mix I made. Starts with some house/90s house but eventually gets to some of my fave techno artists (Gingy, Luke Slater, Benjamin Damage)

Lovely mix! Ideal for work :-)

Thanks! it's not as 'hard' as I usually play but I wanted to give a larger cross section of the stuff I've been digging lately. The new White Material one is especially great, and I'll never stop playing that Ricardo remix.

Anyone here heading to Movement this year?

I went last year and had such a good time. Awesome techno and it's relatively cheap compared to other festivals/what you may even pay on a given weekend if two good bookings are in your home town.

So far I've been looking at a few. Mike Huckaby on Saturday looks good. I will definitely be going to see Erika and Orphyx on Sunday even though Interface party looks just as good—I just cant miss Orphyx. The best one seems to be Monday night, with Voice from the Lake but I imagine by then I'll be pretty dead.

What about you?

A new mix I recorded today. Mostly slower techno/minimal for the first half and then eventually some more conventional house. The transitions in the second half are noticeably weaker but I think it was alright overall.

ricardo vs dj sneak going down later on in the month, troxler playing the same day too.. not sure which one to reach.

If I was in town I'd be at the Villalobos set. Haven't seen him live but he doesn't seem to come to North America that much anymore so Id take advantage of that. I've seen Troxler a few times and he's been really good but not on the level Ive read Ricardo can be.

And I'm interested in all these posts about Movement-I'm in NYC, but I was considering going to Detroit because of how amazing the lineup looks. Though if it has a history of bad sound then I'm probably more okay about missing it. Sound is important.

only bad sound is at the Underground stage. like Firaga said that stage gets most of the techno bookings but I think its worth it for the other stages too. Also the after parties are great.

For me Movement is worth the trip even with some of its issues

New mix to share.

We did it for some contest for some gear swap event in Toronto. Good enough excuse as any to record 35 minutes of some sweet tracks.

More minimal/house than hard techno but I think it fits this thread's taste more than the Electro/House/Deep house thread.

Has anyone seen Joey Beltram recently? Any good? I know he's a legend and R&S is one of my favourite labels, but what/how does he play nowadays?

I'll be there too. Excited to see what type of set Tessela plays.

I figure Beltram will just play big and relentless techno. And by figure I mean really hoping.

Go to Moog in Barcelona. It's one of my favourite clubs in the world. Just make sure it's not their new wave/80s night. It's a tiny club off the Rambla, usually a small or no cover. Pay 7 euros and get a mixed drink, basically a glass of vodka that will last you the night. Stay on the first floor (upstairs now plays poo poo music, but it funnels out all the wankers) and show up no earlier than 130 am

In short: Go to Movement. It is the best.

Long: I went the last two years. It's so worth it. If you book things in advance most things are cheap (compared to other festivals) and Detroit is super fun during that week. It is enclosed at Hart Plaza but getting in and out is pretty easy so it's not like you're stuck there and you can basically bring in whatever you want (the security is asleep and just checking for weapons)

Movement does so many things well. They book "big room" acts during peak times in such a way that it evens out the crowds so you're not feeling too packed anywhere. Also, the atmosphere is so good that most DJs head into the crowd for the more interesting sets. I remember saying hi to Function, Move D, Azari and III, and a bunch of other folk during the Mike Huckaby set. They have a "Made in Detroit" stage which has amazing sound and just features local folk. You'll end up spending a lot of time there. The after parties are amazing too. Usually costing 15-30$ they go from 12 till 6 am. Last year I saw Dettman play b2b with Function as opening act for Chris Liebling. Also you find smaller parties that have pretty cool artists like last year there was one with Erika, BMG, Mike Servito and Orphx. The sheer amount of talented artists there means you'll accidentally end up at some of the best sets you've ever attended.

If I wasn't going to be in Berlin for school stuff I would be going again this year. Definitely worth it.

BWV
Feb 24, 2005

The pit is great during the day. Seeing Orphx, or Voices from the Lake or TommyFourSeven at 3 pm is pretty fun. But yea it's a poo poo show by sundown.

The hotel advice is huge. It;s worth it to pay a bit more for a better place. The first year I stayed at a crap motel thinking i'm a hard rear end dude who has slept in worse places. It was a terrible decision because you're basically dancing for 10 hours+ everyday. The next year I paid a bit more and got a place that was a 10 minute walk from the festival with solid AC and a nice bed. Worth every penny.

BWV
Feb 24, 2005

Question: are festivals like Dekmantel and Dimensions similar to festivals in North America where most DJs play shorter sets. 1 or 2 hours max.
I love Movement and the chance to see so many artists in 3 days but lately I've started to dislike the quick hitting sets and much prefer the longer sets at after-parties.

What am I saying!? I should just go solo and have a blast.

Feb 24, 2005

Yea I'll be in Berlin from June to early August. I was there for 2 months also a few years ago. Berghain obviously is a must but if Stattbadt is open it's also worth checking out. As is Salone Zur Wilden Renate, Club Visionaire and obviously Tressor if only for the smell.

My radio show is on today from 2-4 PM. It's called Anachronisms and mixes a lot of techno with classical music. It's weird as gently caress and a cool space for me to try some experimental things. Thought I'd share the info here cause you guys got taste and we're basically all pals. It's on the Toronto Radio Project which is a cool station (they have shows from Ebony, Nautilus, Kevin McPhee and other Toronto folk).

I will play this. No matter the mix I always play Basic Channel, Orphx, and some Sandwell District stuff.

the marathon not a sprint advice is super important. Except it's more like a super marathon. Try to get a place with AC. You can basically sneak in as much booze as you want and the security is pretty lax. However dont drink that much during the day unless you're going to not stop until 4 am. At which point, dont stop drinking or you'll die.

Go to the underground, wear earplugs and lose all track of time.

Lastly, Made in Detroit Stage will be your love. Treat her right and give her all of your time.

The trip report from Berghain was awesome. I've seen both those guys play the main room but I've been dying to see them play upstairs. I know from other accounts having the techno guys play house is always a treat (probably because they have so many records they've been dying to play but cant)

Also, for some reason I forgot how wonderful Shed is/was. His tracks used to be my life but they fell out of rotation for a bit. Last night it all came back to me during a gig and I just started playing all of his classics out. It cleared the dance floor for a bit but all the Headhigh stuff is killer. And that EQD release..

oliwan posted:

i don't have any experience with this personally, but i do think I have seen people being turned away with pre booked tickets. however, I imagine this only happens in extreme cases with a ticketed event!

If it's a ticketed event on a Friday they shouldn't turn people away. The only ticketed event I've been there was on a Thursday in the Kantine and they didn't seem to be turning away. That said, still probably avoid showing up a with bunch of British bros with collared shirts. Also, that's such a wonderful lineup. Move D is such a lovely performer and Donato is pure hypnosis.
