I think it would be worth including the fact that Seth was the cameraman in Entry #22 (I think? The entry that's the tape from the red tower) and "disappeared" by way of loud obvious-Slendy distortion noise in a burned-out building that's connected in some way to Brian's house.

I have this whole batshit theory about the Operator being some kind of spirit of the technological age that is an incarnation of how constant media exposure messes you up that that idea would fit right into.

I think my favorite part of this series is that I can read this sentence, think you are full on pants-on-head retarded and spewing bullshit out of every orifice, but chances are when the credits roll on Season 3, your theory will be every bit as valid due to lack of evidence as mine.

Considering Season 1 was a lot of focus on the project, and then Jay to get to know him, and Season 2 was a lot of focus on Alex and what he's been doing, I like the idea that we're rounding out the 3 seasons with a focus on Tim to start with. It's giving proper time and pacing to learn about each character in a natural way.

I watched the S2 commentary the other day, and was quite surprised that the "condemned people were stretched on trees" story wasn't intended to be an origin story. I mean, I personally don't WANT there to be an origin story for The Operator, but if they really did just want Alex to tell Jay a spooky story for the hell of it, they really could have used a story that doesn't involve people having their limbs stretched by a magical forest or children dismembered and hung from trees, which IIRC is straight out of one of the original Victor Surge Slenderman stories.

They do a lot of little touches like that to relate to Slenderman "origin stories" written on the forums, that was just a pretty blatant one.

I think the reason for splitting seasons 2 and 3 was because after they neared the end on the "looking through the tapes in the hotel" arc they realized that they would either have to cut the "current time" arc short, have one really long 2nd season, or just split them up. I like how they have those arcs, timewise, it feels really well-paced.

I'm really liking how they've been handling the series, where every other Slenderman-themed series misstepped or fumbled along the way, these guys have kept things on schedule, consistent, all the while having time to film their hilarious side videos.

I've been watching a BBC Documentary "A History of Horror" and they do a quick little recap on Halloween and it's take on the slasher film, and the main point that Carpenter makes is how the scariest scene from Psycho is the scene where the killer comes out of nowhere and kills a man on the staircase. He makes a point that the scariest part of the slasher film is the omnipresence of the slasher, and it immediately reminded me of Marble Hornets and how it has taken its own angle on slasher films. It's a mash-up of the "lost footage" type of horror film and a slasher film, in which the slasher does no actual slashing.

I think that's what makes this so great, it utilizes a theme that's been relegated to campy films and B-movies that are tongue-in-cheek, but treats it seriously and makes two themes blend well together.

This is why i also like movies like Paranormal Activity (despite their flaws), anything that moves horror away from torture porn and gore is a good thing.

Not even just that, but taking two far-separated takes on the genre and melding them together in a way that works. It's really interesting to me. :)

Huh, I didn't know that but apparently so. I only saw the last, most commonly available one. Basically I just didn't like how she turned all demonic and rushed the camera. The entire movie is the Nothing Is Scarier trope and then they throw it all out at the last second. All of the alternate endings sound better.

Yeah, I believe they originally had those alternate endings in the initial screenings and just did them in different places and gauged which one got the best feedback, and went with that one, but I think they stuck with that ending due to a suggestion from somebody in marketing or PR or something like that

It wouldn't be as much of a problem if they came out quicker. If they'd got that out the week after it would've been easier to swallow, but not much fun waiting three weeks for.

Yeah, this is exactly what the problem is here. We're still dealing with a much slower pacing than you'll see on the DVD or otherwise. Watching them in order after the fact, it'll be easier to see why it works. Then, it'll be five minutes, right now it's not even just the three weeks waiting for it, but whatever time we wait for the next entry too.

Commissar posted:

Yeah, there's been more than a few episodes that really needed to be cut down. You don't need to have a full five minute leadup to some action, sometimes all you need is 30 seconds for context and then action.

That wouldn't mesh at all with the previous episode or the one before it where they build up the trip to Rosswood, not to mention a good deal of the walk was them being led in a circle before just decided to head to the tunnel, where poo poo happened.

The scene in that one building also put more context into what happened there, what with Alex only shooting straight up, into the ceiling. It makes you question his motives.

If they cut anything out it'll inevitably have to be lighter filler stuff but there's really not a way to trim that down to below 9/10 minutes without completely killing the pacing they've built leading up to the entry and cramming it all into one short action-filled one with text slapped onto it.
