I was just about to come in here and ask what I did wrong with my pi camera, but I found the stupid Sunny Connector had disconnected. I used gel-backed tape that had contracted over time / temperature and pulled it off the board.

PySpectrometer was a fun build and it works pretty well! I figure I made every mistake you can assembling it, so I must be learning something.

I saw this on slickdeals. Pi 3B+.

Looks like they have a bunch of 3B+s for $75 each now. I picked one up because I need that specific model but the price is at least only double retail, unlike ebay or amazon.

If you got a 3B+ from PI-TOP during their sale, I asked when they're shipping out and they said there's a shipping delay getting from the UK to their shipper in the US. The UK shipments are going out now, but the US will see them around the end of Sept or maybe early Oct.

pi-top shipments on the way, I am excited to finally get a 3B+ so my UPS HAT will finally work right.

Once you get the shipping notice it will be quick, they used DHL, so 2-3 days tops.

now that I've got it, I can actually start playing with my UPS hat. I'm not really much past doing some micropython and setting up octoprint, so I'm still reading docs.

it's a Pico HV3.0B on a 3B+, and they recommend running their NOOBs image, but I'm hesitant because I've never used it before? Right now, I've got the pi as my octoprint server, so to enable it without reinstalling I've been reading through their github looking for dependencies.

https://github.com/modmypi/PiModules/wiki/UPS-PIco-Installation

but I also stumbled on this guide someone made for using it with Volumio

https://community.volumio.org/t/guide-ups-pico-hv3-0-by-pimodules-modmypi/7512

but honestly it seems easier to just set up a new SD card, run the NOOBs UPS installer then install octoprint and import my system backup?

I guess I'm dealing with an embarassment of riches here, because there are so many ways to get this job done. Just want to see if anyone with more experience thinks one way or the other is the better learning experience vs the quickest route vs the safest route.

Is there a good guide to learning the tools to manage a RPI? I suppose dummies guide to being a good/responsible linux admin?

I'm currently running octopi headless, but yesterday it restarted without telling me why. occasionally, the we front end will stop responding, etc. I have learned to use the event logging functions in windows, but have yet to dive into logging and notifs on raspbian. How do I track down what happened? or put in place the tools to diagnose the server in the future?

Looking through the logs I think it must have been a networking problem because I don't see a reboot at the time of the event. Thanks for the link, I can explore that command and the endless wonder of log greppin

I'm really confused about the touchscreen situation. Under bullseye I don't even know what to start looking for to make right clicks work. Should I just bind an external button? It seems like there were some long-press workarounds but not any more?

I set up

https://birdnetpi.com/

over the holidays and it's a lot of fun. I'm running on a zero 2W and it's pokey but I dont want to sacrifice my only 4b to it yet.

Install instructions are complete if a bit hard to follow. you have to branch depending on hardware. They're willing to debug Pi alternatives too if you've got another board lying around.

I've even learned a bit more about stuff I should know like switching power supply noise and mic preamps. It was a huge headache trying to jump straight into this stuff thinking I knew it. It's the old adage that teaching someone completely fresh is easier.

According to some of the guys they can detect them with their fancy mics, but the TensorFlow database/model doesn't include them. There is definitely interest in it.

According to the project owner it's more of a PI oriented wrapper around that TF model. So I think it would be possible to adapt it with a lot of work? They haven't updated the bird model since 2018 due to inexperience with the main birdnet model, but the main dev is very active and involved so he's totally open to stuff like that being added.

Yeah the guys who can hear bats are running audiomoths. They're neat.

BirdNet is run by cornell university and they have iphone and android apps that are way more up to date than this pi project if you want to try it out without installing any pi stuff.

From what I've heard birders will hook their fancy mics up to their phone for a walk in the park to use that app, helps them figure out if there are any rarer birds nearby they should look for.

One of the most interesting things I learned about searching this stuff was stereo recording. Never thought about it, but it's obvious and really neat. Just hook up 2 mics about the distance between your ears.

Edit: oh I guess the main developer just quit. At least it's relatively stable right now.

DR FRASIER KRANG posted:

What microphone setup are you using for this?

I have some directional mini cardioid mics and a 9v power supply that I used to use for recording live shows but I'm not sure if they're the best fit.

Maybe an omnidirectional mic?

I think the idea is omnidirectional is best, but don't feel like you have to conform to some sort of template. I use a $35 lav mic and a $10 USB soundcard.

I think the easiest solutions all involve an i2s mic, as the quality isn't critical, but sensitivity is. the digital MEMs type mics also don't catch as much noise from the power supply, but have different noise problems. You can also run the i2s mic several meters just using just cat5 from what I heard in the github discussions. no additional power beyond what the pi gives.

Managed to kill my CM4 install by power cycling during an update. It would boot, just couldn't find the OS. I could have untangled it I suppose, but it was only like and hour to get it back up with most of the special snowflake drivers that SEEED Reterminals use. Oh well glad I didn't work too hard on the stuff in there. If I do the RPIBoot and mount it as a device i can dump/image the whole eMMC right?

Microcenter had a whole display of 4gb 4b's and a full shelf of RPI400s today, they said they got a whole box instead of the 5 a month they've been getting since the pandemic. This is in atlanta, but I'd expect to see them around other places too soon.

IT not working with OT* is a favorite topic of mine. A lot of time OT doesn't need every single thing they ask for, but lack the specialist knowledge of firewalls or other protocols they have been asked to add to a system, so they ask for the whole thing to start isolating the problem.

*(which is a dumb acronym but ok whatever, at least it acknowledges the difference in work philosophy)

My last like 2 months has been consumed with the task of just putting words on a e-paper display for less than the $35 pimoroni badger.
I've learned a lot about python, Linux, and electronics. Mostly learned that when they charge $35 it is not because they're greedy lol

I managed to let the smoke out of a waveshare hat by accidentally hooking it up backwards on a ribbon cable and burn myself, otherwise yeah all the code is awful.
I'm settling on epdlib for direct pi stuff and probably going with adafruit's libraries for pico stuff, but sometimes I get "e-paper busy" for no reason I can figure out and I have to sort of wiggle the e-paper ribbon connector to blip whatever high signal it's waiting on to go low.

I wanted to do a magic mirror earlier in the year, but now I'm worried about the configuration side. I can handle the hardware and wiring no problem. I just always seem to run out of steam putting something useful on the screen. I guess mostly worried about maintaining the calendar integrations.

Anyone built one and still use it?

Yeah that's the one I was looking at, just checking to see if anyone tried it and had a strong opinion. It looks like a large time sink to get set up.

Another project I'm still working on is the Birdnet Pi project. I was looking to see if there's a way to use an I2S mic (adafruit sph0645) and a pico W to make a wireless RSTP streamer mic. It would really cool to use a small solar setup to put a mic up in a tree in the backyard.

I don't know anything about the software involved. It seems like just running the mic takes most of the Pico's oomph. There's a couple C++ uf2 projects that convert it into a USB mic (super quiet)

Since RTSP streams media and the pico isn't a powerhouse here I don't think there's even a proof of concept RTSP server tutorial. Too bad it can't just encapsulate the I2S data and forward it to the Pi for processing.

I suppose since zero 2Ws are appearing again that's the logical platform choice to play with as a non-programmer.
