I finally got gstreamer to stop being loving terrible by installing some random dude's build of 1.0 that does play nice with the soundcard and forcing everything through pulseaudio. Mind you you would think on a low power machine adding more things to the stack would make it less stable and worse, but yet linux finds a way...
