I have a 0w connected to a former 4” screen from the back seat of my sister-in-law’s wrecked car. I set it up with a magnifying glass because the words are tiny. I think pihole works great and the entire thing is protecting my home network (no Plex or anything family just uses the networks WiFi to stream/browse) to the point my dad remarked on ads not annoying him lately. Best $20 I ever spent except for my vertical mouse.

FWIW I've been using a Pi Zero W (plugged into my router for power, no ethernet obviously) for a few months and it has not reduced my speeds at all.

I haven’t had to ever think of my Pi 0w unless the power blinks. I know nothing about networking but did steps exactly as the setup and videos said and it just works! I never noticed any speed drops (avg 32 down/8up) but the latency is only in the 30ms range and after three years of satellite and a couple on my tethered phone’s unlimited plan I am extremely happy with what I have.

Yes. As long as you realize that they are not a replacement for a laptop/desktop. They are great unitaskers.

I love my RPi 0w. It’s hooked up to a 50” Sony ands wireless keyboard/trackpad and came with Raspian on its SD card. I mainly am using it as a $20+ “hands on” Linux box. I bought some modern O’Reily books-for -Kindle and I can read/practice from my bed (it’s slow input, but that’s a good thing when one is learning). Just going through it learning to open/update/fix issues is waaay better than simply reading a book, although trying to pull up a website is torture.

Got 16 big “thick (lol e-book)” manuals from Humble Bundle for $20 and while I might not need Linux Device Drivers for a long time, the shell and basic OS books are well planned and laid out.

NextDNS has been working great, and paying a pittance fee per month is a better use of time I could use shitposting

I got a RPi0 w from Canakit through Amazon last year for a Pihole. It came with a small hub and mini hdmi + mini usb power cord that has a on/off switch. It works wonderfully, except for lovely microsd cards dying. But that’s known, and I just pay >$5/mo for NextDNS now. It’s still plugged in, but turned off and I have an idea for it (with its wireless ability) but I’m still thinking of Raspbian questions for the Linux thread :actually:

I've had great success with PhotoRec (https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download) in the past, even on Windows recovering from ext4.

The name's a misnomer, it'll recover a hundred or more filetypes in the default configuration using heuristics against the raw disk sectors.

Thanks for this, btw. Going to see what my porn files from a 2002 HDD were like…

If you need the GPIO pins of the Pi for a project, there's the Libre Computer Pi clones on amazon. Those are like a Pi 3 not a 4, and don't have wifi. And I guess not every hat or Pi accessory will work with them. $45 is kinda a ripoff, but less of a ripoff than $100 for a Pi 4.

Because I'm with Rexxed, once you're paying $100 for a Pi you should be asking "is a cheap NUC or chromebox a better deal than this?"

https://shopgoodwill.com has everybody's old-but-functional work laptop starting around $9. Most come ready to go, but it's still cheaper to buy a $11 laptop and a separate AC adapter from Amazon than to find a pi in the wild.

I know someone who just bought one for $140 AUD with accessories from a local (Australian) supplier, so there is stock trickling in. However I watched the pi zero W go in and out of stock in a matter of seconds at the same supplier, so things are still very bad. I don't expect it to improve much for at least 12 months.

I bought a 0w for ~:10bux: back in early 2020 because I wanted to try running piHole. Holy poo poo did I get lucky on timing…I would love a pi4 for emulation, but gently caress eBay scalping bas-turds!

I just use NextDNS, it has similar functionality but hosted and free/cheap

I used NextDNS before l switched to a PiHole, and the service worked fine and fast. I’m using NordVPN on my router more recently, but to be honest aside from torrenting the odd textbook/research NextDNS was the least browsing-impact of the three (but only by a sub-15ish ms if at all). I know they’re all three slightly different solutions to the same general problem, but Nord+uBlock origin seems to be fine for ads and I get VPN privacy to boot. I just got tired of setting up the pi every time the power blinked and buying SD cards.

My Dad has failing eyesight, and has recently been getting me to unsolder/solder some chips and capacitors (like twenty year old ic’s from offset printers). I don’t know much about electronics, but am enjoying myself and it has sparked my interest in doing some basic learning. I know my single RPi 0w is not meant for learning electronics like an Arduino or even a breadboard, but I sorta don’t know where to start. I’ve seen it discussed in this thread as an adjunct to the RPis and just thought I’d ask here since I’m phone-posting and don’t have search:

1) Do we have a basic electronics thread for ignorant newbies?

2) Would it be out of line to ask here for recommendations for a basic kit off Amazon to get components & tools? I have a pretty good soldering gun and some multimeters already, but don’t want to spend $100 on a giant box of resistors when I’m just starting out. I figure some of the Pi discussions are from folks also involved in building related doo-dads and widgets.

3) Are there some true-blue books/websites or even subreddits for folks to learn the basics-for-Dummies? I know I could Google, but such a broad topic would make Google’s poor search results choke. Free is preferable while I’m still trying to see if this goes anywhere with me.

My 0w was for a PiHole a few years ago, and I have basic Linux competence with Debian-based and Raspbian from 2020ish. Thanks for any links or advice, again apologies for just asking instead of waiting to get home and start searching and looking for a basic setup.

I know this isn’t amazon but if you’re lucky and you live near a Microcenter, they have cheaper boxes of a variety of parts that might work well for hobbyists, including components such as pir sensors, temperature sensors, resistors, capacitors, diodes, and so on.
