Chicago peeps - have you had a chance to try Off Color's Dino S'mores? I thought it was phenomenal - completely blew Short's S'more Stout out of the water (S'more Stout has more of a smoky taste, which I generally don't prefer). It had this great marshmallow vanilla presence that I really liked. Apparently they're bottling it soon.

I did a week ago, and it was way too much smores flavoring for me. I personally feel that it broke the golden rule of taste like beer first and x second because it just tasted like a liquid version of a smores Cliff bar. I have been trying to get Apex Predator though because I thought Troublesome was fantastic and Scurry was also really good.

Any suggestions for a Chicago-origin beer? I'm looking for a great tasting porter brewed close to home.

Revolution Eugene and Half Acre Chub Step are both good. There are like 30 breweries in Chicago, so they are a dime a dozen.

Basically any store that sells beer in Chicago should have Revolution and most of them should have Eugene. It is hard not to come by.

Trip report:

After the Dark Lord six year vertical I would say 2011 is definitely the best one. 2011 seemed like an odd duck because there was a strong coffee flavor that really was not present in the others.

2012, 2010, and 2009 were all very good and it is hard to rank them. 2009 and 2010 were both very good, but they were starting to get a bit of oxidation on them, but that being said they had a nice mellow toffee flavor and their sweetness was really under control completely. 2012 seemed to be the point at which Dark Lord really properly mellowed out in sweetness.

2014 and 2013 were just not for me. I honestly don't really like fresh Dark Lord that much. It it just way too sweet.

Grabbed a random stout today. Halfway through a glass, I wondered why I was getting buzzed already and looked at the ABV. 10% :eyepop:

Now I'm finding out that 10% isn't even the high end for imperial stouts.

I had some Black Tuesday today and that is 19%. Also, a number of states cap their ABV in beer. Ohio does not allow anything above 12% to be sold.

Wait 2-3 years. Fresh Dark Lord is way too sweet. After 2-3 years it becomes fantastic.

As someone who does not own a car and does not want to carry a ton of glass around, cans own. Revolution and Oscar Blues only do cans and Bells just added 4 pack cans of a couple of their offerings. They are cheaper to make, keep beer better, and are cheaper to transport.

So, apparently the distributer charged us like $180 for a case instead of $50 or whatever it should have been and my boss priced according to that. I was completely confused.

Also yeah, it got brewed 6/11 for the person asking if there was a recent release.

It is honestly really good. That being said, I am a fan of cocktails and of beer. The strong ale was an amazing stand-in for whiskey though and I think I am going to grab a bottle. Also, I am really hype for the rest of the batch that is going to be barrel aged for 6 months in rye barrels. My only complaint about it is that I felt the maraschino cherry flavor was a tad bit heavy, but honestly I still really liked it.

Well, in Chicago I don't blame him. Alpha King is EVERYWHERE for like $5 on tap, so it is normally on the low price of things and it is a pretty decent pale ale. I mean, it is not my favorite, but for price and availability in Chicago it is one of my standbys when I am out.
