Count Chocula posted:Have you heard Lincoln Le Favre or Isaac Graham? They just played an acoustic show with Wil Wagner. This Friday will be my millionth time seeing the Smith Street Band. What about Milhouse? I saw Lincoln on the Glory Days tour a few weeks ago, but Isaac Graham didn't play the Adelaide show. I'm not familiar with Milhouse. I had a killer week last week. Saw The Hard Aches / Foxtrot / Secondhand Squad for The Hard Aches EP launch, then got to see Foxtrot / The Hard Aches / Hightime at a house party. I had a two day hangover, it was loving nuts. Can't wait to see The Bennies next month too.

It was great that they sold it out but there were a few douchebags hassling people in the pit. Is the giant guy at every Smith Street show who invades the stage and sings with them and hugs randoms a goon? He looks like a stereotypical one. Wil just quietly put out a new acoustic EP. Listen to 'Laika', but hug your dog first. Count Chocula fucked around with this message at 09:03 on Feb 19, 2013 |

This drunk dude was being a dick swinging around a full bottle of spirits during the Smith Streets set. The guitarist from the Bennies (who is like 6'8), led him out side and the guy cracked it over him. Some of the cuts were a hair away from hitting some nerves in his arm, so a tiny difference and he would never have been able to play again. The 'venue' was a space a couple of metres squared in like, an office space. At the start of the set I remember Will from Smith Street saying something like, "There's so few places that will do all ages shows, so lets respect this place so we can keep it." or something, and then that happens. Any who, because the show was cut short, Will did a couple of acoustic songs to finish of the set on the beach. So yeah, completely unprovoked act of senseless drunk violence.

Good thread. From the Aussie bands I listen to which haven't been mentioned here yet I'll nominate Emperors from Perth - if you've watched any cricket on the T.V this summer you are probably familiar with this song... Be Ready When I Say Go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCC9thDM53o Named Rock Song of 2012 by U.S. iTunes for whatever that's worth. Came in at #186 in the triple J hottest 100.

The only thing I'd ad is that the guy wasn't a fan, he was just one of the owners friends.

In case anyone's interested, the DC3 (TISM, ROOT!) are playing The Factory in Marrickville tonight. Featuring a last-minute announced set from another Australian music legend, Pinky Beecroft (Machine Gun Fellatio). Might be good.

Saw DC3 last weekend in Melbourne playing their album launch with a Sunday arvo show of "The DC3 wrecks your favorite songs" show. Man it was good, playing Thrift Shop to the tune of Popcorn and Gangnam Style in the stylings of Delta Goodrem.

Any thoughts on Warped Tour coming?quote:
I haven't bothered with Soundwave since 2009 because of the direction it's gone towards bigger bands/higher ticket costs. They probably won't even be that different, but at least Warped Tour might actually put on Australian acts. There isn't really any exposure for punk bands in Australia besides, what, community radio like 4ZZZ? Those old tour line-ups are sick. http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/news/local/35004/Vans-Warped-tour-returning-to-Australia-in-December-2013

Clairy Browne and the Bangin' Rackettes USA tour starting this week http://vanguardrecords.tumblr.com/post/44006889225/clairy-browne-the-bangin-rackettes-sign-with One of the backing signers makes the costumes for the girls. They started off as a party band and some of the members were in a burlesque group together. Very popular with girls and lots of dancing at their gigs. There is sort of a "scene" with soul bands in the city they originated now. quote:SXSW: There are a lot of Australian bands at SXSW this year, some friends went in 2002/03 when almost no one was going and paid their own way there (GIT), it cost them a lot I remember them having to do six months at a pub on Sunday afternoons to pay it off. http://www.turnituporturnitoff.com/SXSW/SXSW2002/Sat-final.htm http://www.turnituporturnitoff.com/SXSW/SXSW2003/20030315.htm From the rest of the 40+ Australian bands at SXSW 2013 I have seen: The Audreys The Beards Jackson Firebird You have to be in the right mood for the Beards, is only the one joke. I can vouch for Jackson Firebird and the Audreys though.

This thread is great, thanks guys, for all the great music from down under. I became obsessed with The Cat Empire right before their second album. I got to see them live in SF, CA back in April 2012, right before a huge eurotrip with the wife... great vibe, and fun as poo poo i mean HOLY HELL THESE GUYS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE and the crowd was rockin' out hard. Tons of fans who got to see these guys live finally. On the eurotrip a week later, we ended up in Amsterdam. While there, we stayed on a guy's couch thanks to Couchsurfing, and he took us to a great beer bar that only served Belgian, German, and Czech beers, apparently Netherlands own beer is not that good...? On the way home, we talk about music, and HE asks me if I had ever heard of these guys from Melbourne who play a genreless variety of music, called The Cat Empire. I lost my poo poo, started acting like an idiot who just met his hero, and we went back to his place, played poker, drank more, talked, laughed, and listened to 3 entire albums before passing out. What a loving night. Thank you aussies.

Speaking of that there's a new Cat Empire track from their upcoming album. It's kind of weird actually, sounds a bit electronic. It was pretty killer live when they played it at the St Kilda Festival. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JovVlFkwrrk

I've had this thread marked for ages now and can't believe I haven't added one of my favorite bands Cog Were this were this awesome prog rock band from Bondi that were kinda the Australian Tool but more pub rocky. They're pre debut stuff was pretty good good if a little lacking in the production quality they really needed but their debut album was an absolute stonker. In your face bass lines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6J7TUHDzC8 Could be turned down to make interesting little ballads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSedorD2Z0M Great ascending monsters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20_rpxHTNY0 They released a follow up with the same producer but they overdid it in the studio, blew all their money and came out with an album that just sounded like they couldn't figure out what kind of music they wanted to make. Half of it was akin to their usual stuff and the other half was this weird synth backed conspiracy theory protest songs. They bowed out with a great live recording from the Coogee bay hotel, the opening song just is the perfect blend of Prog Rock grandeur while having that backyard tradesmen feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySUcfJes5vI Wish they'd get back together for a tour, I don't think they'll ever record something as good as The New Normal again though.

I quite liked The New Normal back in the day, but their second album was such a piece of poo poo, with the most godawful lyrics, it turned me off the band forever. Plus I got over my Tool phase and am no longer into that kind of music.

This whole top twenty countdowns from each year on JJJ has been producing an eclectic mix between "Wow, that song is still really cool!" and "My god... people were into this poo poo?"

I was in my car yesterday and Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal was playing and I was like, why the gently caress are they playing this? Oh...
The JJJ DJ today who was probably born in the 90s had no idea what the gently caress Tom Jones' "If I Only Knew" was doing in his playlist. What makes it especially hilarious is that it was Tom Jones' "Hip" album where he covered a bunch of (then) Indie artists and such to try and 'connect' with 'the youth' of the day. It obviously worked.

I loved The New Normal, waited eagerly for the second album and couldn't stand it. Put this bad taste in my mouth for the band on the whole. If the vocalist was a bit... better (his voice is weird and not really in a good way) and wrote better lyrics, they would've been even bigger.
