There's a heartbreaking thread in E/N where somebody basically lays out how much he's lost as a pokies addict. Gotta love a machine that hurts us both individually and societally. I live across the street from the Annandale, and I hate how it had to reduce the days it traded. I mostly hate it because it forced my friends out of hosting Cult Cinema there. But even though it's saved, the scene still feels hurt. The Gaelic's down, the Mac's upstairs is down, the Hoey's still gone... I'm not sure what to do. I like warehouse places, but they barely survive. I'm thinking of moving to Melbourne. At least The Standard is decent. There's a good documentary, Persecution Blues: The Fight for the Tote, about the SLAM Rally. But people there CARED. Around here's there's not the same concert. Half the Mess & Noise crowd sneers at the Annandale and goes off to gigs at FBi Social or GoodGod. Or maybe, as somebody in the thread I spun this off suggested, rock fans really are old and should die out. I have a nightmare that in 30 years I'll still be seeing ancient pub rock bands at the Sando (where God drinks) and going to the Townie after.

As a sort of soft insult, I told him they reminded me of Anal oval office, and the singer (who I would by this point notice had Aspergers or something)took it as a compliment. I did enjoy their show (bought their T-shirt and everything), they just were a terrible band who played terrible music.

For those that dont know, or do know, or whatever, Bob Log is an Australian resident now too. I make the effort to see him whenever hes in town (usually playing in cronulla at the brass monkey) and its always a good show. he was on last night but it kinda blew because there was literally me and 5 other people there including the bar staff, but i got a chance to talk to him for a bit after the show and have a few laughs. if you havent seen him, please check him out, hes a great all round performer.

I first visited Australia several years ago (live here now) and had a great time going out and seeing tons of Melbourne bands. Even watching Area 7 a good 10 years after their heyday was good fun. Is it uncool to like pop songs played on Triple J in the last five years? Because I dig lush, colourful pop songs. Cut Copy - dancey, disco-influenced. Hearts on Fire Lights and Music Tame Impala - psychedelic rock. Maybe not bringing new things to the table, but they do it well with a rich sound. I enjoyed their set at Falls last year.  Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind Expectation They already got a mention, but The Drones are loving great. They remind me the tiniest bit of Modest Mouse, if they holed up in a cabin for several months and sounded super Australian. There's that earthy intensity to them. The only Australian artists I really love are Karnivool, Angus & Julia Stone and the John Butler Trio. I saw all three of them live last year (A&J Stone / JBT at BDO) and they are real class acts. I think Ocean by John Butler is one of my favourite instrumental tracks ever - the Max Sessions version owns so hard  Karnivool are imo the only Australian hard rock/metal band worth listening to. Change has gotta be one of my favourites from the Sound Awake period at least, and Themata is full of more straight up rock gems like COTE. The Beast is probably my favourite A&J Stone song from A Book Like This at the moment, and Draw Your Swords is definitely my favourite overall. On the whole I prefer the Angus led songs, but Julia has a great voice and songs like Hold On are the poo poo. Actually I am also going to mention Dead Letter Circus because This Is The Warning is a loving fantastic album, The Design is a killer chill-out song and I hope these guys become the figurehead for Australian alt rock. My first exposure to DLC was seeing them open for Muse and they made quite an impression. As for some less known & promising ones, when I went to see Mono the bands that opened were called Secret Birds (who played some cool drone sorta stuff) and No Anchor (who have a cool dual bass/no guitars sludge set up). Cut Copy is Australian?! Man, the more you know... Anyways, I can't believe, especially with the Nick Cave leadoff, that no one has mentioned Dirty Three yet. Fronted by violinist/Bad Seed/Grinderman member/frequent Cave soundtrack collaborator (they worked together on The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) Warren Ellis, they make music that is by turns epic, aching, explosive, tragic, and occasionally joyful. This is a particularly good time to be paying attention to them because they just put out their first record in five(?) years, which means maybe we'll get a worldwide tour out of them, and they are a live act not to be missed. Plus Warren Ellis gives some of the best meandering stange-banter you will ever hear. This is the song that got me hooked on them. Back from Spectrum last night. Opening act was The Dead Love, first time I've seen or heard them and they're all right. I would listen to more of them. Strangers had a a good set, and the crowd packed in for them. Still no word on when there's going to be an album release. Any other Sydney goons go last night? I had to bail before Closure in Moscow came on, but I wasn't the only one. A group behind me left at the same time who pretty much only went for Strangers too. This is the first time I've listened to A+J, and I swear it would be better without the vocals. The songs leave like no impression, just slips off my ears like water off a duck's back. Birds of Tokyo are ok, though. I wouldn't listen to them heavily, but I can stomach them. Birds Of Tokyo only have one song I like (When This Ship Sinks or something) and I obviously prefer Ian Kenny's work in Karnivool.

I'm dumbfounded to hear that there are no decent venues in Sydney? Even here in Adelaide there is somewhere to go. The gov, Jive (bands played on jjj), Grace Emily (hipster crowd), Cranker (metal). I don't think they always charge unless a big name is playing. Jive is pretty cool for new upcoming bands. Where as the gov mainly has the made-its (boy/bear), Sarah Blasko, Washington et al. Not getting radio reception at work has killed finding new bands for me. In addition, no one comes to Adelaide. I few bands I wanted to see went to Canberra, but not here! Has anyone checked out the new Unearthed radio station? I have been meaning to do so, but have not got around to it.

The Red Rattler and The Factory Theatre, both in Marrickville, both good venues for very different reasons, and The Annandale is a good venue, even if they just book poo poo acts (although I recently saw Crooked Fiddle Band with Barons of Tang there). The Townie is putting on shows now, even if their venue space is for poo poo it still beats having to walk into the disgusting POS space that is the Sando.

Amazingly original Dungeon (now Lord) are power metal from the old school, with less cheesiness. Pod People and Lycanthia are good doom metal bands. Daysend does nu-metal in a way that's actually listenable. Psycroptic, mentioned earlier in the thread, are pretty mindblowing math-metally kind of stuff. But truth be told, if you want the peak of the metal genre, you need to kick it with the scandos for a while.

Gospel of the Horns are black/thrash. Midnight Odyssey are like some kind of shoegaze/black metal. All this thinking about Aussie metal makes me wish Metal for the Brain was still around.

I'm confused by what you guys define as a good venue, is it that free entry rock-pub kinda deal that seems to be idolised in these parts? Because I've been to a few gigs in and around Sydney and none (except for the hordern pavilion ughhh) seemed spectacularly great/poo poo-tacular

What's bad about Horden? I think they are mainly talking about smaller bands, rather than well established bands. Enmore, Horden, Metro usually only have bigger shows on, which isn't exactly a good place to see or find new music. Or on the otherside, for bands to get gigs at.

Sydneys problem is that with venues like the Excelsior and Hopetoun Closing up there is fewer places for small bands to get gigs. Justin Hemmes tried to 'smooth it over' with the live music crowd when he bought the Excelsior by opening the Beresford Hotel for live music with new PA and poo poo. The problem is that the Excelsior was about 150-200 people whereas the Beresford is 600 or more, so Small bands will never get their foot in the door because they wont ever fill out the venue. Some of the most fun gigs Ive played and the best bands Ive seen was packed into that tiny little room at the back of the Excelsior. Now, the only places that new/smaller acts can get any time at is lovely slots at the Annandale in multi-band bills (like the afformentioned Screaming Sundays or Blood/sweat/beers) or the even worse Valve bar shows which is always a revolving door of a crowd as each bands friends and family arrive to watch the bands play. Bigger clubs like the metro, Gaelic, Factory all kind of need your band to have a big following to even get considered. Our band got lucky in that we made a lot of contacts with Harbor Agency acts that put us in a good light with them and as such got some nice gigs (Played with Doc Neeson, The Trews, Sarah McLeod) at decent venues which lead to some good exposure for us. I dunno, I tend to rate venues from the player side rather than the punter because my only experience for the last 4 years has been from the stage - doing gigs sucked all the fun out of going to see other bands.

In terms of hard/stoner rock, I'm not sure there has been a better Aussie band than Warped.
