Joe Mckee of Snowman is touring his solo stuff, I saw him recently in Sydney. It's... not very good. Think of all the really slow bits on Horse Rat and the Swan, reduce it down to one person and remove any semblance of melody or excitement. I'll still probably buy it though... DC3 on the other hand are absolutely fantastic and I had a great time at the tiny club where he played set by both Root! and DC3. I really think that songs like "Danni from Dan Murphys" and especially "Back to Mine" are the best and most honest 'Australiana' songs of the last few years. It's definitely an improvement over the last releases of TISM. On the subject of Pinky Beecroft, when he was starting his solo work I remember hearing a song called "I like films about morons" on TripleJ and could never find it again. Does anyone know if it exists in any form somewhere?

screaden posted:I'm going to plug my friend's band (a band I was in for a time from it's inception, but other stuff forced me to re-prioritise). Aside from my connections to them, I legitimately think they are an excellent band which I reckon local goons will like. CD in the mail, God I love bandcamp. Thanks!

First single from Joe Mckee of Snowman's solo album is released: http://vimeo.com/37633425 From what I remember of the concert I saw this is pretty much the sound of the entire album... So let's ignore that and get excited for new Graveyard Train dropping in less than 10 days! And if that ends up sucking there's always Jonathan Boulet round the corner in June! Also, I've been listening to Ellen Kibble's new album a hell of alot after reading the review on mess and noise. It's pretty subtle and took a while for all the tracks to really settle into their own individual characters, but once they did I've really been loving it. A really good personal album with enough little touches of Australiana to make you feel patriotic about giving your money. http://ellenkibble.bandcamp.com/album/turncoat

The DC3 aka that guy from Root! formerly of TISM are crowdsourcing for their new album. http://www.pozible.com/index.php/archive/index/6171 I threw in my $70 to get all the necessary musical goodies. If this is the only way small cult bands are able to keep releasing their music then so be it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WrB4iP-7R8

On a jaunt through bandcamp I found the page for Bedroom Suck Records which is some mob out of Queensland. Anyway I ended up really liking this EP from Scott & Charlene's Wedding / Peak Twins (Only Son and Your Love are such slacker fun) and this one from Hissey Miyake / Terrible Truths and hence wanted to obtain the music in exchange for some money. But can I do that? No! The only way to buy these things is apparently on vinyl, but even if I did want to do that when you try to click 'Buy Vinyl' it leads you to the website which the store is still 'under construction' It's really getting my goat all these bands that use bandcamp to host their music but don't let you actually buy it from the same place. You've uploaded the music to the site. Let me buy it! Let me give you money! It's not that complicated! The worst example is loving Alex Lloyd's bandcamp, all the albums up there ready to listen to and someone put alot of effort into organising the backgrounds and whatnot, but do you actually want to buy them? There's a handy 'Purchase from Itunes" link in the corner! What a loving waste, especially since its near guaranteed that bandcamp charges alot less in its overheads than iTunes. Ugh.

Sooo happy for new Drones and Nick Cave. I haven't been that enamoured by what I've heard of Push the Sky Away but I know its a move from the bombast of his past few releases so I don't want to judge it too quickly, seeing him at the Opera House later this month should be fantastic. One project I want to raise or re-raise awareness of is Laura Imbruglia who if you only know the last name writes quirky little folk songs which are just wonderful. Just little things in the lyrics get in my head for days, like from Don't: The hunger only eats you When someone takes the cake I wish you weren't compelled to keep on Feeding that belly-ache Anyway she's now trying to raise some funding for her new album and its fancy packaging (last album was in the art style of a MAD magazine) and still hasn't quite made it to the minimum $5,000 so if you like what you hear please pre-order. http://www.pozible.com/project/13968 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XnBIUnA7Y0 I know there's a still a bit of controversy with crowdfunding, I know that some raised eyebrows about Eskimo Joe raising pre-orders through Pozible of about 50k. AJ Maddah on his twitter ranted against them as selfish for doing it, but since he seems to not ever put any Australian bands in his tours to give them a proper income then its no wonder they're forced to raise startup capital themselves. Anyone else want to discuss how much they loving hate AJ Maddah but end up paying for a ticket to one of his concerts because c'mon its Sigur Ros? Anyway, I gave my $75 to The DC3 a while ago and received my digital goodies this week so I'm yet to have any bad experiences, I think its just an inevitability that hardcore fans will have to subsidise the cult bands they like with more startup capital than in the past, and since we're an island in the middle of nowhere we'll have to be doing it more often.
