Speaking of the Annandale, how about some discussion about something that's basically a constant in the Aussie mucis scene: Venuechat! This post will probably be quite Sydney-centric so any Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth (looking at you duck) goons who want to chip in please do. For those who don't know, venues for bands and musicians to play in Australia are constantly coming and going, but with the going part unfortunately happening more and more frequently these days. The Annandale Hotel in Sydney has yet again come close to having to shut up, but it's thankfully looking like their Buy A Brick! campaign (and some timely corporate sponsorship) may have staved off closure for the time being. The Gaelic has just announced no more live bands. The Hopetoun has been gone for about 2(?) years now. Melbourne punters are fighting hard for places to see acts. There's a multitude of reasons for it. The high cost of venue operation and restrictive liquor licencing often makes venues that want to have bands unprofitable. City councils aren't helping either. Development approval is a long, expensive process, especially in Sydney where our lovely Lord Mayor would really rather you have a nice quiet night and then gently caress off home by midnight. So often only monied hotel developers (Hemmes, I'm looking at you) can get places opened, and you end up with generic renovated old pubs. Gentrification is another issue. A lot of the areas where the bars that bands play in are older parts of town that are rapidly becoming gentrified, and councils love indulging noise complaints from people who move in next to nightspots. A club on Oxford St recently had to stop having band nights after noise complaints were made. About Oxford St. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And then there's these bastards: Pokies. Many many moons ago pubs and clubs used to put on bands to get people in and make money. And then NSW (and I believe Victoria) changed the laws governing them and then pubs and clubs went nuts on them as they are easy, easy money. This is an oft-cited reason for the continued strength of the WA music scene, as IIRC over there pokies are only allowed in the casino. (There's an [b]excellent[/b[ ABC doco about the WA scene, but hosed if I can remember the name of it.) And of course the general apathy of the public doesn't help. But never fear, there's usually some sort of silver lining. The Annandale seems to have gotten another chance. The Hi-Fi has opened in Sydney and seems to be getting positive reviews. Merivale has opened a new venue upstairs of The Beresford. And the rally for The Tote and the subsequent SLAM day rally helped force a change in government policy and saved an iconic venue.

ZakAce posted:Oh, dear. This whole Aussies "adopting" Kiwi singers / bands feels more like you guys stealing our stuff, IMHO. I don't mind Crowded House being called Aussies, because at least they had Aussie people in the band, but people calling (for example) Shihad Aussies just because they're based more in Melbourne nowadays bother me. They came from Wellington, damnit. It's worse when overseas people call Kiwis Aussies, I once read something that said Jack Body (composer) is an Aussie. That person can piss off. Just to make you even angrier, Shihad are not just based in Melbourne, IIRC they've all become Australian citizens.

The Presets' show at Sound Relief a couple of years back was amazing. There was a loving off huge storm raging when they came on and people went mental. Also: 1) The singer's wife/girlfriend/partner/whatever is outrageously hot and 2) their daughter is as hell. Sat next to them at a Japanese place on King St and she spent the entire time making faces at me and my friend. True story.

This is the big problem with festivals in Australia at the moment, people don't go to the see bands, they just go because it's the thing to do. Which I don't get, if you just wanna go get pissed, why would you do it at a music festival when you've gotta line up for an hour to pay $10 for a mid-strength beer?

Brown Blitzkrieg posted:Man, I know where to go to see good music, I remember when 505 was just an apartment in Hibernian House. The problem is that the live music scene is flooded with simple, moronic music, and it encourages people to have poor taste. Last night I saw a band who sang the lyrics "How do you sleep at night, with a monkey on your back and the chip on your shoulder". What I wanted to ask them was "How do you sleep at night when you cram three tired, feeble clichés into one line of your lacklustre chorus in your lovely song?". Then they started screaming something about setting fire to a UFO or something and I just couldn't stop laughing at them. As somebody who is maturing beyond the youthful insolence and short-sightedness of punk and rock, I feel like I am not being catered to nearly enough. Not nearly enough at all. No wonder I know people in their mid-twenties who still like adolescent musical styles, they never get exposed to anything decent. Not much point in catering to you, your head is clearly so far up your own arse you wouldn't be able to hear the music anyway.
