5 was a great return to form. It has some real rough loading times, and one hell of a slow burn first act (not really a bad thing imo but I know a lot of people lost patience with it), but it's a very good game that was definitely the most 'traditionally Suikoden' of the PS2 entries. The only thing closer to a Suikoden' 2 experience is probably Exit Fate.

Yeah the interviews mention them but the campaign doesn't. They also promised the fortress town but it became a stretch goal for the campaign, so I'm thinking that army battles might have gone that way as well. They're being a bit opaque.

I think it's pretty obvious that they set the stretch goals at funding amounts they expected to hit.

But yeah, if the gameplay isn't good, then I won't bother. Wishlisted and we'll see how it ends up.

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

Eiyuden Chronicles, despite not having a single FuccBot, has made over $2 million in less than 48 hours. I had initially thought it would cap out around maybe $2.5 mil but now it feels on track to break $5 million.

Don't know if I'll back or not. Kinda tempted to get the OST on vinyl, though there's always a chance they'll sell that sort of thing individually later.

5 was all right, it was even a good Suikoden game, but it's plagued by weird dungeon design, poorly-communicated recruitment flags, a high encounter rate, and (most unforgivably) incredibly long load times for battles. it's almost a good game, but it has dozens of minor problems about it that add up to make it very hard for me to enjoy.

Without Higashino on board the soundtrack is never going to reach the level of Suikoden music did unfortunately (especially II), from what I can see of Murayama's sheer commitment on getting older creators back together, I would be surprised if he hadn't already asked Higashino and she declined.

I'll probably end up ripping my copies of Suikoden 4 and 5 to play them via emulator. The PS2 is tucked away in a bin with other forgotten games/accessories and lacks resolution bumping. Sadly I think I both bought and resold #3 on SA Mart some 10+ years ago because I lost track of the case long ago and it's either that or someone borrowed it and we both forgot.

I give 3-4 years until the KS delivers me a Steam key anyway. They keep meeting the funding goals, which I assume at some point will actually add up to extend the development and bug fixing time.

i haven't seen much talk about this since the kickstarter, has there been news?

also, no matter how good/bad it ends up being, the fallout's gonna be amazing imo. personally, i hope "low budget mass effect with porn" ends up better than mass effect (not a big ask after andromeda), so we get a bunch of people online totally only playing it for the gameplay, honest! or maybe it'll be another really really bad game that kickstarted for millions, though it'll be forever impossible to eclipse star citizen in that category

3 was also bad about it, and also a bad game. 4 was slightly better, but it still had to load 3d models so it took a while anyway.

1 and 2 had a single frame of load time for battles, and the full transition to combat was like a quarter of a second.

Dr. Video Games 0031 posted:

the load time is masked with that stupid five-second sun animation, so there's no skipping that no matter how fast your computer can load it

my meaning is probably a little different from what you're thinking. suikoden 5 had the baffling design decision where, if the game considered you as "doing the story," it made it impossible to recruit about 70% of the optional characters in the game. the problem was, basically you were almost always considered to be doing the story. the best way to tell that you aren't in the middle of the story is when the current arc concludes and you wake up in the castle, usually with someone saying "hey the tactician wanted to see you" or "hey check out the atrium"

as soon as you do, the game will count you as "doing the story" again, and lock you out of recruitng most of the cast once more. no other suikoden game has this kind of lockout.

The first kiiiiind of does, but only with the one character. Leon, I think? Whichever one you need to get a letter to recruit, but there are only brief windows where you can. I think you can stroll right on past General What's Her Name real easy, by advancing the plot, as well.

But yeah, I see what you mean.

yeah leon is definitely the biggest example in the series i can think of outside of 5. but short of bugs and other weirdness like the listening rune in 2, hard preventing them from even appearing is pretty rare otherwise and usually only happens with the really hidden endgame characters like snowe or whatever things you have to finish beforehand to save nanami.
