Are the quests poorly balanced or is that dude dumb or did they fix that? Because ideally I don't wanna add bonus quests that turbofuck the game

I like them but I will totally admit that my bar is pretty low for that sort of thing. My understanding was that the guy wanted to add skill checks to introduce some variety into the available quests. I can certainly see why some people wouldn't care for it, though.

Wondering the same thing myself. I tried to get back into D2 by buying Ressurection, and now it just feels like a single-player MMO. I have a feeling that D1 is any better.

the beginning of diablo 1 holds up fine imo, but once you get to the levels with endless acid spitting monsters or succubi machine gunning magic attacks at you and running away because they have the same movement speed as you and you can only hope theres a corner you can trap them in, its no longer worth playing

The MMORPG aspect of Diablo 2 only seems to trigger if you are one of those people who think the game "starts" once you finish, as though finely honing your character into an infinite murder machine (ala a MMORPG) is the point of playing any game.

And I mean, that may legitimately be the intent from the designers, but I thought the first two games were a nice pleasant time to spend killing some monsters until you win. Granted for all I know the expansion you mention makes it so you never win

I stand by my opinion. I don't like the grinding of bosses over and over waiting for RNGesus to finally drop a Stone of Jordan or whatever, the lovely death mechanics, the masses of enemies totally immune to multiple elements and the feeling that the game gives each class a ton of abilities but insists that you hyper-specialise. I wouldn't mind that last one so much if the game had easy respeccing, but it's very limited and the items to do so are hard to get. I am aware tha the original D2 didn't have any respecs, but that's no excuse.

I think that my preferences are more in line with D3 these days, but I will say that D4 looks like interesting. It won't be out until 2026 knowing Blizzard.

Diablo 2 Resurrected is a remaster of the original D2, though they have included a number of QOL changes and just started releasing balance changes to try and make more builds viable. It doesn't really change the basic gameplay loop, especially if single-player (or playing mostly solo online) is your thing.

I quite enjoy some games with overt Diablo influences, like Destiny (for my sins) but I am completely unable to fathom why Diablo itself is fun. It just does nothing for me at all.

I get that that's all completely subjective lol, I'm not really questioning it, but man I just don't get games like tbor Titan Quest or Torchlight or Grim Dawn or whatever at all. I played Din's Curse for a bit because I found some of its systems really intriguing but I couldn't get past the basic gameplay

People enjoy Diablo for the same reason as Dark Souls, because it takes the classic dungeon crawler genre and makes it more approachable and action packed.

Except Dark Souls has proper action controls. You roll around, parry, attack, etc. Diablo style you just click on endless monsters and sometimes activate an ability which usually just blows up poo poo around you or does something without much input. From a game feel standpoint I've always thought Diablo arpgs are terrible. The only time that changed was the console version of D3. I played through it once with my wife and we had a good time as it played more like an action game (no clicking so you direct attack, you roll, and the controls are in general more tactile). I also liked D3's switchable abilities which are an improvement over the typical specializing trees which are usually unbalanced. D3's system is actually kinda 4e-ish.

I'm obviously crazy on this since Diabo likes are stupid popular especially Path of Exile which is almost perfectly designed to annoy me by picking every arpg trend I hate.

After decades I beat Daggerfall for the first time using the Unity version. I've sunk hundreds of hours into DF but previously if I didn't run afoul of bugs I'd end up restarting with some new character idea. Not much of an ending but I was glad to reach it. Orcs are free!

I think next I'm gonna try to get into the Might and Magic merge mod. The merge mod looks like it adds some good features but man every old game could benefit from the kind of love and skill the developer behind DF Unity put into it.

Ooh! You'll have fun with it! There are a couple different versions of the Merge Mod. The base version and the revamp are the ones that are updated more often. It's really fun to be able to make a powerhouse party of 5 or just go singleton and work your way through the mod that way.

The Kotors are on sale on the iOS store.

It’s dumb that the AppStore doesn’t have a wishlist feature or any way of tracking apps you’re interested in. It doesn’t even indicate when something’s on sale. They treat sales as price changes.

I missed out on Legend Of Grimrock being a buck a few days ago.

KOTOR: Yeah these controls are pretty bad. Especially movement and finding interactable containers.*

That said it runs well despite not appearing to drain the battery much (this is a 2020 iPad Pro). No antialiasing, but probably the right call for battery conservation.

I think they could have spruced up the interface a bit. It’s low res.

I wouldn’t recommend the game for touch play. Seems to work well enough with a controller, though.

E:* after getting used to it, touch movement isn’t that bad, but still less than ideal.

The end-stage enemies dropping steaks and only steaks was real discourse material after you find out they are a mind-controlled (livestock?) race in Eschalon Book 2, gave me heavy vibes of a throwaway plot gag in a hyper-parody of golden age pulp scifi stories called Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers.

Overall I liked Eschalon book 1 & book 2, and look forward to playing Eschalon book 3. Only real issue I had with the game was the large world maps + slow movement speed/lack of a run option.

Not sure what old school RPG I am going to play next. Might give Darklands or Serpent in the Staglands if I'm up to physically taking notes and cross-referencing stuff and tracking calendar events, maybe a GoldBox rpg engine game if the tsr font doesn't aggravate me, or something.

Still chugging along in Avernum 5, near the end game now doing Melanchion's quests. Mostly just getting more end game gear and building up cash for various skill purchases and spells. I didn't take Gladwell's geas and I had to destroy the Anama after stealing their papers. Magical Efficiency is so good in this game. I typically get reduced spell costs all the time and sometimes the cheaper spells end up being free to cast.

I believe the issue where the Modron Maze can reset the entire game state is still unpatched, and Beamdog's forums have lots of people saying it's even worse on non-PC platforms. One of their devs says Generalized Biffing MAY help, hence mentioning PC mods being required.

First Ultima I played I played was 4, on the C64, and then I went back and played the previous ones, and then I played 5 and 6 on PC, so this is later than that when there'd been enough time to release a retrospective compendium on 3.5", but they still had real manuals and cloth. loving. maps.

I rather envy you the booklets.

I rarely collect physical gaming perephrenelia (spelling probably incorrect), but I did recently pick up the complete Zoo Tycoon 2. Not the ultimate edition that was three discs in one box, but the base game and each of the four expansions in their original boxes with insert art and manuals.

Depends on what you mean by two booklets? There's a manual (which also includes the list of spells and the paragraphs), and the system-specific reference card.

There's also a poster, which was only present in some copies to begin with. Something similar is true of the Ultima Second Trilogy; some copies come with the Ultima IV ankh and/or Ultima V coin, and some don't.

Playing through Pathfinder Kingmaker now but I'll probably start on Wizardry 6 as my next dungeon crawler RPG after I finish up with that.
