They're not booting AT&T users for ST yet. I'd say just use the cards since you already bought them. However, if you're unhappy, just go to another carrier.

Honestly I'd sell the AT&T SIM for ST if I were you. And use TMobile. That is, assuming you have adequate TMo coverage in your area. Last time I looked, those SIMs were worth quite a bit more than what you paid.

I choose to wait things out. I can't justify spending money on a price-inflated eBay ST SIM when the future of ST on the AT&T network is cloudy. I'd rather just sit back and wait for the dust to settle before dropping money on a new phone and having to deal with carrier uncertainty.

I think the future of new ST activations may be murky, but I think existing accounts are probably safe. The inflated SIM price plus your first month is still probably at or under the cost of VZW et al

Right now, ST is still "unlimited". They're both owned by TracFone but Walmart co-owns ST.

Edit: I completely misread this. No, the Net10 card isn't the same card as the ST one last I checked.

I bought a year of AT&T ST time about 3 months ago, so I have a while (and hopefully nothing breaks bad before then).

But, I am looking towards the future and see that T-Mobile has a plan for $70 that is truly unlimited. That is cool, and I'm thinking of getting that and getting rid of my home internet and just tethering that. Would that work?

Maybe if you root and tether without TMobile knowing? The plans are new, but from what I gather its $10-20 for tethering and there is a cap. I would bet TMobile will be like sprint and only offer unlimited for the phone, not tethering.

There are people who tether unauthorized anyway, but overall you're always running the risk of TMobile detecting it, so I probably wouldn't get rid of your home Internet just yet.

My wife and I are getting ready to jump ship on ATT, and I was planning on going to ST until I noticed this mess. I assume it wont be a problem for me as my contract will be up and I can unlock my iPhone, but my wife will still have a year. I was planning on just playing the ECF for my contract as going to ST would still save use about ~$500 over that year, with the ECF included.

THe problem is that I'm not sure if ATT will unlock my wife's phone even after. She has a samsung focus flash, and they're not clear on whether they unlock such things. Anyone had any similar experience?

Will I need to get an ATT sim off Ebay, or get her a new phone? (would be a Nexus 4).

Not sure about the unlocking thing, but you will have to get an AT&T ST SIM off of eBay as they're no longer selling them for the foreseeable future.

However, those who still use AT&T on ST still have service...for now. There's talk of ST no longer supporting it. Even if that happens, you can jump to another MVNO carrier with AT&T (that AT&T isn't currently going after).

They might do what Net10 did and just give away free T-Mobile cards.

However, since ST is Walmart + TracFone, I'm guessing Walmart will definitely try to push AT&T and TracFone to come to an agreement.

Stumpus posted:

Yes, even if your phone's unlocked, you'd still need a SIM card that works on Straight Talk (or whatever carrier you're going to). An AT&T SIM won't work for ST's services even though you'd be on their towers, you'd have to get one that specifically works for ST's carrier.

E: Speaking of T-Mobile...

I found this at a Walmart here in Omaha, NE. If they're selling it, then T-Mobile MUST work here. Not sure how well though. I'll have to try the T-Mobile cards I have and try one of their Pay by the Day plans.

Does anyone have Boost Mobile? I think they have the best deal if your area has service. I just ordered my phone and saw this: http://www.boostmobile.com/shop/plans/referral-program/ $25 for each person and I'm the only one obligated to pay (for my first month as usual). If someone wants to do it that would be great when my phone gets here in a few days.

Boost is Sprint without roaming, which means the coverage is pretty bad. For voice and text only it would likely be ok, data would likely be abysmal.

Seconding this. My roommate is on Boost and gets roughly Edge data speeds. Fortunately he is on a massively antiquated blackberry so it doesn't matter to much. Also for what little it's worth, the dedicated Boost Mobile retail space near my work that opened up last month already closed down.

It's one of their standard plans, I'd bet on the $30 4G plan going away sooner. However, if you're thinking of the $70 prepaid plan then you would probably be better off with their $70 no-contract postpaid plan instead. The main advantages are US-based customer support (vs. India-outsourced), limited AT&T data roaming (vs. none with prepaid), and 500 megs of tethering (vs. none with prepaid). If you're buying a new phone you can also get 0% financing for up to 24 months through T-Mobile when you sign up for their postpaid plans.

Where's the cheapest place to buy Page Plus monthly refills? CallingMart doesn't sell them for a discount, but they do have a 5% coupon good until tomorrow.

I found this wholesale dealer PagePlusNC that sells them for $26.25 by check/direct deposit and $27.00 by credit card over the phone, but I'm not comfortable with either payment option considering their amateurish webpage.

So they have started to port your number, rendering your old phone useless, and leaving you with nothing until they complete the port? Cuz that sounds brutal.

When I ported my number to Google Voice, it took the better part of 2 full days. Granted, my phone still worked with Sprint during the port.
