Danny Wolfers really is some kind of a musical genius. Whether he's making electro stuff or moody soundtracks for imaginary films, it's all really consistently incredible stuff.

These are the secrets of death we teach.
I feel I should mention Oneohtrix Point Never here. OPN is Dan Lopatin, a New-Agey ambient musician from Brookyln who plays a vintage synthesizer called the Juno 60 (nicknamed Judy). He is also a co-founder and curator of the label Software, which has been putting out some great stuff recently.

He has three main albums, each very different from the last:

1. Rifts

A 2 CD compilation collecting songs from various self-released CDRs, cassettes, etc. he had previously put out.

The songs on these discs vary from relaxed, nostalgic synth soundscapes reminiscent of Boards of Canada, to bouncy arpeggio build-ups, and finally to long droning nightmare pieces. Throughout the whole album there is a sense of deep, abstract unease, as if the listener is trapped in a timeless digital purgatory. This tension periodically erupts into abrasive arpeggio explosions, before subsiding back into droning noise, as on highlight track "Learning To Control Myself".

Example song 1: "Russian Mind" on YouTube (this unofficial music video is worth watching for the way it perfectly captures the aesthetic of this album, IMO)

Example song 2: "Betrayed in the Octagon" on YouTube

2. Returnal

This is OPN's most relaxing and purely ambient work, once you get past the abrasive first track; a car wreck of crunchy noise, lasers, and horrific samples pummeling your eardrums for 5 minutes before melting away into gentle ambiance.

Unlike the intimidating Rifts, this album is best experienced as a whole. Each track flows nicely into the next, and afterward you feel as if you've been taken on a beautiful journey. I often put on this album when I have a really bad headache, and feel the tension in my head drift away.

This album's title track is Lopatin's first to incorporate his vocals, in a bizarre ode to the internet as a "self-atomizing machine". There is also a separate Returnal EP with a gorgeous piano and vocal cover of that song.

Example song: "Where Does Time Go" on YouTube

Stream the entire album: http://www.xlr8r.com/news/2010/06/stream-new-oneohtrix-point-never (don't say I didn't warn you about that first track)

3. Replica

This album is a huge departure from the last two, emphasizing beats and samples for the first time and de-emphasizing the role of the Juno 60 synth. As a result this is his least ambient album, but it has the most range of the three.

The stoner sci-fi concept behind this album was to imagine what the sounds of our era, especially the disposable stuff like advertising jingles or "muzak", would sound like if it was pieced together by curious anthropologists in the far future. Hence the title "Replica". To this end, much of the album was created using samples from old commercials; little-sound bites like the satisfied "aaah" of someone acting in a soda commercial, taken out of context and cut up in often jarring ways.

This album is at times haunting, silly, relaxing, caustic, and melancholy. Truly a unique listen.

Example song 1: "Power of Persuasion" on Vimeo

Example song 2: "Replica" on YouTube (official music video)

This is really good, the Current 93 album that the name is from is good too. I have been looking for more music of this type (dark ambient/noise I guess?) and found Viral symph0ny and really liked it. When looking around the only stuff I can find that is similar to it is stuff that is getting way more into industrial music and is, in my opinion, kinda stupid; stuff like "Genocide Organ" is not really what I am looking for. Anyone know some stuff similar to Viral? In case this is too off genre for the thread here is one of my favourite ambient songs lately, Disintegration Loop 1.1 by William Basinski.

I'm looking for more stuff like Chill Out by KLF. It has a very organic and natural sound. Don't take that to mean I'm looking for a "relax to sounds of nature" album - I like the trippiness of Chill Out, and I like heavily manipulated samples of conversations, speeches, and natural sounds.

I'd also like to find more stuff like this mellow track by Pop Will Eat Itself. I realize it may not fit in with most of the stuff in this thread, but it's still pretty chill.

You end up going to Sphongleland by getting into this stuff, but if you want to stay clean then lots of British techno acts in the 90's were doing this kind of thing: FSOL, The Orb, Global Communication, etc.

Thanks for the recommendations - I'm digging them, and I can't believe I never heard Global Communication.

I meant to mention that I'm familiar with The Orb, Spacetime Continuum and FSOL. They made for some very weird nights between 1993 and 1995.

I took a long break from that whole genre for several years, and was thrilled to discover Shpongle a couple years ago. I've recently also gotten into Ott and other artists off Twisted.

You might already know it, but another really enjoyable album from that early 90s period is Every Man and Woman is a Star by Ultramarine. It's a little more active than The Orb's Adventures or Chill Out, but still has that open light sound to it.

I've also been listening Ov Biospheres and Sacred Grooves by Psychick Warriors ov Gaia lately, which hasn't really aged as gracefully but is still a pretty neat chill out listen from the same era.

Thank you :D I'm currently mixing a track from the new album, actually.

I've got 5 tracks written and recorded. 2 of those I thought were completely done being mixed but I realized they weren't so I keep working on them (you can check out the work-in-progress versions here: http://soundcloud.com/betaproject ), and the other 3 I hope to finish mixing soon. I'm shooting for at least 10 tracks, so I suppose it'll be released whenever I can get another 5+ written/recorded/mixed and be content with the way they sound overall.

This album has a couple actual instruments on it instead of 100% softsynth stuff! I wouldn't say it's straightforward ambient but it'll be ambient-influenced and there might be a few proper ambient sections in some of the songs.

I've never received a cent for any of my solo stuff, but I don't mind it that way. It's my favorite hobby and I absolutely love doing it so I don't really care about getting paid for it :shobon: I guess I could offer this new album as pay-what-you-want type deal, though.
